    February 12, 1848.

    Mr. Charles Patterson:
    Dear Sir:
I am under painful necessity of announcing to you the death of your dear mother. She died the first day of February, at 11:00 o'clock in the evening. The circumstances of her death is as fol lows: The third day of January, she took a severe attack of the apoplexy and, by the assistance of medical aid, she apparently got better on Monday. The last day of the month, Cecilia found her behind the corn crib helpless and speechless. The doctor was called in and she appeared to get better; continued so until Tuesday morning, when she took the last fit, which terminated her earthly existence. Although we have great reason to mourn the loss of her, yet our loss is her eternal gain, for she died in full faith of the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She was a woman of deep piety, her suffering was great, but they are over and she has entered into that rest that remains for the people of God. As to her virtues and fidelity in her different departments of her life, I need not comment, for they are well known to you. She was fifty-seven years, eleven months and five days old. As you had not the pleasure of seeing her for many years, I herein send to you a little of her hair, that you may have some idea of her looks. Farewell.

A pen word on the matter: When John W. Wheat was at your house on his way to Mexico, you commenced to send us your paper and it was a welcome message. We received three numbers and it stopped. Why, we don't know. John informs us that the reason it stopped before was the Postmaster informed you that no such people lived here. We still live in Jay County, Indiana, and I think we will continue to live here. In your communications to us, direct them to Jay County Court House, Jay County, Indiana; then they will not miss. There is another Portland in the State of Indiana - it is information. We are all well at present - that is all at home. I am at home at present, with Cecilia and Jane, your two youngest sisters, whom you have never seen. Robert A. Wheat makes his home here, but is away now on his circuit - in Ohio. The last heard from B. Wheat and family, all were well. Thomas T. and William R. Wheat and families are well. Mary McClelland and family are well. Have not heard from John since he left Fort Leavenworth. Samuel J. Wheat, the last I heard, he was in Louisiana. He informed me that he was coming to see you this spring. I wish you would come to see us as soon as convenient. No more at present, and I remain your step-father in the bonds of love. February 12, 1848.
    THOMAS WHEAT.
