"Tradition says when 4 brothers struck out into wilderness, they adopted the MATHES spelling of their name so that they would always know each other."

"The following will supplement material presented in the genealogy entitled "The Mathews (Mathes) Family in America" by I.C. Van Deventer -- Alexander Printing Co., 1925. Further research has disclosed important early records.

Alexander Mathews came with the Doak family in the Scotch-Irish immigration from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania, later following John Lewis and Ephraim McDowell into Augusta Co., Virginia. In an unpublished manuscript, "Finley - Shields" by Major Albert Finley France, of Annapolis, MD., he says that James Doak, his wife Elizibeth, and five children, Samual, David, John, Robert and Thankful emigrated from North of Ireland to America, landing in Newcastle, Delaware in 1708 and settled in Chester Co., PA.

An error in the data handed down in the family has the immigrant ancestor written as "George", this is not correct, subsequent research shows that his name was Alexander Mathews. This family dropped the "W" from the name and has been since been spelled "Mathes". Alexander is said to have went from Pennsylvania to Augusta Co., VA in 1737, mentioned in "Abstracts of Augusta,Co., by Chalkley" in 1746, (Vol. I, p. 25). His first Land Grant was from The Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax, baron of Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia for 400 acres on September 14, 1749, and went on record in the Northern Neck Book "G" at page 321.
Another grant of land for 265 acres on Aug. 6, 1750, is recorded in Northern Neck Book "G" pg 405. These tracts of land in Augusta Co., by the division of Counties, were successively in Frederick Co., Shenandoah, Co., and Warren Co. He later sold 265 acres to James McNeill in Frederick Co., Deed Book 3, pg 392 on Feb. 4, 1755. A deed dated Nov. 26, 1783, from Alexander Mathews, Sr., to his son James, conveys a certain part of a tract of land near Flint Run surveyed by George Hume, bearing date Aug. 6, 1750, containing 132 acres.

In 1757 when George Washington was a candidate for the House of Burgesses, the name Alexander Mathews appears on a list of persons who voted for him.

(Story of Winchester in VA., by Morton, 1925 - pg 78).
Dec. 28, 1780, Alexander Mathews took the oath of Magistrate and took his seal accordingly. (Minute Book, 1774-81 pg 176, Shenandoah,Co. VA records.)

The will of Alexander Mathews dated Sep. 5, 1783 is recorded in Will Book "B", pg 499, Shenandoah, Co.,VA., witnessed by Abraham Keller, James Hutchison and John Netherton, (we believe that this is Sarah Netherton's relative).

Another book that talks about Alexander is: "Prominent Tennesseeans" by William Speer, 1888, pg. 184.:

This fixes the time of arrival of these families as 1708.

    Notes:

George Mathes -- From Lost State of Franklin, by Samuel Cole Williams:
"Occurrences on the Border -- 1788. On Friday Aug. 8, a party of 31 under Captain Fain, a part of the guard of Houston Station, joined a party of settlers, crossed the Little Tennessee at a point about nine miles distant. . . . The Indians surrounded them, drove them into the river, killed 16 and wounded 4. The Indians had taken possession of the ford, and as whites endeavored to swim across the stream many were slaughtered in the water." George Mathes was one of the 16 killed.

With his brothers, Alexander Jr., Allen and Jeremiah, he emigrated to upper East TN about 1780, where he married and lived a short time in the neighborhood of Leesburg. Later going to Blount Co., he was one of the pioneers.

Another story from the book "Life As It Is": During a raid of the Indians the settlers ran into a blockhouse some miles below Maryville. After a siege of some days the Indians withdrew, and George Mathes and his brother-in-law Anderson volunteered to go and look for food. The Indians suprised them and they were overtaken and tomahawked to death by John Watts, a half-breed chief, notorious for his bloodthirsty deeds and character.

    Notes:

There is confusion about this Robert, Robert's spouse, and Robert's descendants, because there were two "Roberts." Two Robert Matthews were born in North Carolina at about
the same time; two Roberts moved to Maury County about the same time; and two Roberts lived and died in the same area of Maury County. There is no doubt that they were kin to each other, but the exact kinship has not been determined. One Robert was the likely the brother of John,
Joseph, and Martha Hanna, and the other Robert was likely a cousin.
Y-DNA testing has confirmed kinship of the "Cousin Robert" but has not clarified if "Cousin Robert" was indeed a cousin, or was the brother.
One Robert (this Robert, son of James Matthews and Mary Doak) married Mary McKinnon; the other Robert (Cousin) married Mary Ann Stewart. The family of Robert Matthews and Mary Ann Stewart is chronicled in the book, Sampson Stewart, His Royal Ancestors and Some of His Descendants.

[Cornwallis surrendered October 19, 1781.] He settled near Washington College, where he spent a long and useful life, occupying a position of prominence.

"He succeeded his father as ruling elder in Salem church, serving in that capacity for a period of sixty years, from 1806 to 1865, at the time of his death."

"In 1819 he built, near Washington College, a large three-story residence of hewn logs, with stone basement. The rooms were very large with plenty of windows, and there was a center chimney with fireplace in each room. This was quite a pretentious home in those pioneer days. Many years later, weatherboarding was nailed on over the logs, and in 1919, after having stood one hundred years, it was remodeled into a modern home. It passed out of the ownership of the family. It was sometimes called the 'Ark'."

"Alexander Mathes III was a farmer and brick mason. He was a strict Presbyterian and considered with regret the fact that bread was baked in his home on the Sabbath. He was a very large man, weighing nearly three hundred pounds; about 5 feet 11 inches in height; had clear blue eyes, dark hair and florid complexion."

Fain Anderson wrote: "Alexander Mathes Jr. was a considerable man, in ability and weight (weighing more than 300 pounds). I knew him from 1852 until his death, a pure noble Christian gentleman."

The will of Alexander Mathes III dated December 7, 1863, probated March term 1865, is of record in Will Book 2, page 120 Washington County Courthouse, TN.

(any bets that the B stands for Blackburn???)

I looked for one of my Moyers in NC and found only one, Joshua Moyers 1779 Washington Co NC (prob)

Joshua Moyers is son of Christopher Moyers Jr. 1740 VA; d 1815 TN. (He's in SAR)
HOWEVER, Christopher had property in North Carolina (now White Pine, Jefferson Co, TN)
    N. C. land grant was located 6/8 miles east of the Kuntz's on Long Creek a tributary of the French Broad, in what today is the town of White Pine, Jefferson Co TN.

I desc from James Moyers b 1767 who married Mary Blackburn b 1768 to my John Blackburn SR and Janet O'Neal Mathes.

the John B, Moyers b 1764 NC could have easily ID'd himself to be from NC. Not many dates are concrete, including John B's b.d. since they were often off a bit - but he's in the right age range to be child of Christopher & Susanna.

Now, looking at your James Blackburn b 1787 - my John Blackburn's kids have a gap bet 1785 and 1789.

My Blackburns have strong connections to Jefferson Co TN but looking at today's maps, TN, NC and eastern TN are bound to have overlapping borders of the centuries and places can sometimes be deceiving to their time.
If I'm right, that would mean John B. Moyers, living next to James would be his bro-in-law.

Hope you can make heads and tails of this -- it's too close to not be so - maybe a tweak here and there - but that's got to be who they are. I'm going to attach them in my files and note as question marks so you can see how I think it goes.
