    John Thompson, son of William, was born in Augusta County and moved to the head of Maiden Spring Fork of the Clinch in Montgomery County (now Tazewell) in 1776.

    Military:
    He enrolled in a company of militia commanded by Capt. Thomas Mastin in the spring of 1780. He served as a guard at Witten's Fort which was situated on the North Fork of the Clinch River.
