    Captain Cox was a successful lawyer and also served in the
    Confederate Army. His mother served as postmistress in Gainesboro, Tennessee, and taught school in a Yankee neighborhood to provide for her family while her husband was in in the service.

    James Nathaniel Cox was born on February 9, 1876 at Gainesboro, Tn. Educated at the University of Tennessee. He was the son of Capt R A and Nancy Draper Cox. His first position was assistant postmaster of Gainesboro. He helped organized the old Gainesboro Telephone Company in 1896 and was made general manager when the headquarters was moved to Sparta in 1897. He married Miss Mary Young of Sparta in 1897 and 7 children are living.
    He moved to Cookeville in 1908 and has been president and general manager of his company since 1927. He was one of the 10 organizers of the old Dixie College and was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee from 1925 to 1929.
    He is a Colonel on Governor McAlister's staff, a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, and president of the alumni association of the University of Tennessee. He was president of the U S Independent Association in 1930-31. He is president of the Cookeville Printing Company, publishers of the Putnam County Herald and the Livingston Enterprise, a member of the Church of Christ and a Lion.

    James married Mary Evelyn Young on 7 Apr 1897 in White Co, Tennessee. Mary (daughter of Charles Coker Young and Annette Catherine Burton) was born on 25 Dec 1876 in Tennessee; died on 9 Aug 1965 in Putnam Co, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Cookeville's Clara Cox Epperson, Poet Laureate of Tennessee, has died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
    W.A. Howard in Cookeville Thursday night June 10th after a long illness.
    Mrs. Epperson was born and reared in Gainesboro. A daughter of the alte Capt. Robert Cox and Mrs.Nancy Draper.
    Mrs. Epperson attended school in Gainesboro and received her_____.
    She was married to John A. Epperson in 1891.
    Mr. Eperson died in 1919 and since his death she had made her home with her daughter Mrs. W. A. Howard in Cookeville.
    Mrs. Epperson was president of the Tennessee Press and ____for several years. She was a member of the League of American For Women and had served as bort state and national chairman of dram for the Federation of Women's Clubs.
    She was organizing regent of the Old Walton Road Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She also was president of the Cookeville Book Lovers Club. For several years she was editor of the poetry page of the Tennessee Club Women.

    Charles H Cox, who reported for naval duty on Wednesday of last week, is stationed at Camp Peary, VA. Before going into the service he was a popular business man of the city, being owner and manager of the Royal Crown Bottling Company. Mrs. Cox, and daughter and son, Ann and Charles Cox, are at their home, on Dixie avenue during her husband's absence. A son of Mr. & Mrs.. J. N. Cox, Mr. Cox has two brothers in service, Capt. Robert A. Cox and William B. Cox.

    Charles Hampton Cox, 60, owner of Royal Crown Bottling Company here since 1939, died Sunday morning at Cookeville General Hospital following an extended illness. He was a resident of East 9th Street.
    Funeral services were held today at Whitson Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with burial at Cookeville City cemetery; Rev Phillip Ritter, pastor of the First Methodist Church, of which Mr Cox was a member, officiating.
    Mr Cox, a native of Davidson County, spent the greater part of his life in Cookeville. He was the son of James N and Mary Young Cox and was reared on North Washington Avenue. He attended Cookeville schools.
    He was editor of the Putnam County Herald for several years prior to becoming a bottler.
    He attended the University of Tennessee and received a law degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Al Menah Shrine Temple, the Nashville Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and was a former Rotarian and member of the Lions Club.
    Survivors are his widow, Mrs Hazel Jenkins Cox; a daughter, Mrs Leon Burns Jr; a son, Charles Cox Jr; all of Cookeville; 2 sisters, Mrs Sam Colle, Johnson City; Mrs Henry Martin, Pt Claire, Ala; 3 brothers, Robert, Mobile, Ala; James Cox Jr, Iowa; Wilson R Cox, Cornelis, Ga. Another sister, Mrs Mary Cox Robinson, died several years ago.
