  1. 1.  James Minter Brown was born on 1 Oct 1851 in KeKalb Co, Missouri; died on 6 Sep 1929 in Jackson Co, Kansas.

    James M Brown, an early settler of Kansas, died at his home in Soldier, Kas. September 6. Mr. brown was born near DeKalb Mo. in 1851, and came to Kansas when a young man. He lived on a farm near Pardee. In 1872 he married Miss Rose Elliott, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Elliott, who came to Kansas in 1855 and settled on a farm two miles east of Pardee. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brown.

    Mrs. Brown died April 4, 1891. After the death of Mrs. Brown, Mr. brown was both father and mother to his family of children. The two youngest both died at the age of four. After the children all became grown and left home, Mr. Brown lived alone on his farm until June of this year, when he sold out and moved to Solldier, where he lived until his death.

    Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at Soldier. A very large crowd attended. The Odd Fellows had charge of services at the grave. Burial was at Soldier cemetery.

    ************************************************************James M. brown, 78, who died September 6 at his home in Soldier, Kas.,after five years of failing health, lived in Atchison county during his young manhood. He was widely known in Nemaha and Jackson counties as a successful farmer.

    James Minter Brown was born October 1, 1851, at DeKalb, Mo. In his young manhood the family moved to Atchison county, Kas. Where February 18, 1873, Mr. Brown married to Rose Elliott. Nine children were born to them. They are: Virgil, now of St. Joseph, Mo.; Nelson of Circleville; Harry of St. Joseph; Peter of Kansas City, Mo. ; Frank of Soldier; Mrs. Stella Cocherell of El Reno, Okla.; Mrs. May Losey of Worland, Wyo.; John and Fred, the youngest died each at the age of four.

    Forty-one years ago the family moved to Nemaha county, near Goff, and two years later northeast of Soldier, in which neighborhood Mr. Brown lived until two months ago he moved to Soldier.

    Mrs. Brown passed away in April, 1892. Besides his children, he is survived by 21grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; there are also brothers, John of St. Joseph, and Bob, of McLouth; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Miller, of DeKalb, Mo.

    The funeral was held in the Christian Church in Soldier.
