Obituary per Billy "Jelly Bean" Oglesby:

"One hundred and five years ago on March 20, 1868 "Uncle Dave" Oglesby was born near Sebree, Kentucky. One hundred and four years and three hundred and sixty-one days later, the beloved gentleman died, after a short illness at the Union County Hospital.

"Uncle Dave", as he was affectionately called by the multiple members of his family and close friends, had celebrated each of his centenarian birthdays with parties held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.M. Timmons. When he was 101, some sixty-six of his relatives attended the party, representing three states. On his 104th birthday there were 90 visitors to his birthday party that lasted all day. At that time a picture of five generations of his family were made and visitors were registered from as far away as Kansas. The five generations were Mr. Oglesby, Mrs. R.K. Baker, both of Pride, Mrs. Bill Jenkins of Morganfield and Mrs. Jimmy Rodgers of Indianapolis, and her son, Brian.

Mr. Oglesby and his late wife, the former Martha Whitledge who died in 1942, were the parents of 11 children, six boys and five girls, six of whom are still living. They are Miss Prudy Oglesby, Mrs. Nola Timmons, Mrs. Lottie Baker, Joe Oglesby and Charles Oglesby all of Union County, and Carroll Oglesby of Henderson.

He had been a resident of Union County for over 84 years, always residing in the Boxville-Pride area.

When asked to what he attributed his longevity on his 101st birthday, he said it was probably due to a family trait as his grandmother, Betty Shelton Oren lived to be 108 years old. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Shelton, came from North Carolina, settling near Sebree where he was born, over a century ago.

His prescription for a long life was moderation in all things, including eating. Mr. Oglesby has always been a farmer and a staunch Republican. He still possessed an alert mind and a keen sense of humor up to the time of his death, even though he lost his eyesight 16 years ago."

Miss Lora Oglesby, 78-year-old daughter of the centurian, followed her father in death Sunday.
The two are survived by the above listed children, brothers and sisters. Mr. Oglesby also has 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Joint funeral services were conducted at three o'clock Tuesday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield, with Brother Sam Belo and Brother Edmond Jacobs officiating. Burial was in the Bordley Cemetery. *
