WILL OF LEWIS SHELTON
In the name of God Amen, I Lewis Shelton of the State of South Carolina & County of Pendleton being of sound mind, and disposing memory--but calling to mind the Mortallity of my body, do think fit to make and ordaine this my last will and testament -- in manner and forme following Viz, first I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Nancy one Negroe gerle named Leah and hir futer increase & I likewise give and bequeath unto my daughter Sukey one Negroe gerle named Dilcy and hir futer increase and my will and desire is that if my above daughters Nancy and Sukey or either of them should die without heirs that the above named Negro or Negroes shall be equall divided amongst the rest of my children -- and my will and desire is that the whole remaining part of my estate the Negroes Land and Stock of ever kind together with all the plantation tooles and household furniture be kept together under the conduct of my after named Executors until the youngest of my sons comes of age and then the whole remaining part of my estate in land and Negroes and stock of every kind and plantation tools and household furniture--be equally divided between my six sons named as follows: Aaron and Taliaferros and Spencer and
Lewis and David and Vincent and that each of them have an equal part of the above mentioned particulars. I do hereby constitute and appoint my trusty and beloved friends William Martin and Taliaferros Shelton my Execors to this my last will and testament--disannuling revoking and making void all other will or wills heretofore by me maide--

Abram Shelton was active in the life of the county, serving as justice, vestryman, militia officer, sheriff and member of General Assembly. He was the son of Crispen Shelton who with his brothers John and Daniel Shelton, moved from Amelia County to Pittsylvania about 1765, and settled in the upper part of the Meadows, where they owned large bodies of land.

His home was on Buck Branch, near Chalk Level. Dr. Tavenor Shelton was one of the early physicians of the county.

will was proven at Pittsylvania C. H. in 1789 in which he named wife Chloe, daughters Lettie, Anne and Jane Shelton, sons Abram, Crispen, (Doctor) Tavenour, Frederick, Meacon, Robertson and William.

Abraham married Chloe Robertson on 16 Jan 1760 in Amelia Co, Virginia. Chloe was born in 1741 in Amelia, Pittsylvania Co, Virginia; died on 20 Feb 1814 in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

NOTE*: It is not known which children belong to which wife. We know that Jane Irby was the first wife and had at least one child, Wilmouth. We know, according to Taliaferro's will, that Elizabeth was his wife at the time of his death. It is not known if Jane and Elizabeth were his only wives. More research will have to be done to sort this out. According to Billie Shelton, ". From the records that I have gathered it appears that Taliaferro married Jane Irby on 4-21-1798 in Pittsylvania County, Va. They had a daughter Wilmouth born ca1799 who died before 1834. There was possibly a son born also to Jane. Information that I have received but not proven is that he married a second time in Georgia to person unknown and this was the Mother of his other children. His third marriage was to Elizabeth ? who was his wife when he died ca 1834 in Blount County, Alabama. There was no issue from that marriage."

the fifteenth day of (page 269) December in the year of our LORD one thousand eight hundred and thirty four, Presents the honorable ROBERT D. MIDDLETON Judge of the County Court of said County.

On the application of ELIZABETH SHELTON widow and ROBERT SHELTON son of TALIFERRO SHELTON, deceased and of JAMES BOX. It is ordered that the said JAMES BOX be and he is hereby appointed administrator of all and singular the goods chattels & personal estate late of TALIFERRO SHELTON deceased and the said JAMES BOX given bond with ROBERT SHELTON and JOHN GRAVES securities in the penal sum of six thousand dollars which is ordered to be recorded and it is further ordered that letters of administration issue to the said JAMES BOX and that the same be recorded.

Ordered that DAVID WESTBROOKS, WILLIAM SAMPLES, ISAAC WILLIAMS, DANIEL EASLEY and JOHN STATON or any more of them be and are hereby appointed to value and appraise the goods & chattels late of TALIFERRO SHELTON deceased, which shall be sworn to them by JAMES BOX Administrator of the estate of said TALIFERRO SHELTON and on their oaths return an Inventory there of to this Court within thirty days from this time.

Ordered that JAMES BOX expose to public sale inventory to him the personal estate late of TALIFERRO SHELTON late of this County deceased, on a credit of Twelve months

(The Bond of Administrater ordered to be nowdue is as follows Towit.) The State of Alabama, Blount County. Know all men by their presents that we JAMES BOX, GILBERT SHELTON and JOHN GRAVES are held and firmly bound with ROBERT D. MIDDLETON Judge of the County Court of said County and his successors in office in the final sum of six thousand Dollars for the due payment of which shall and truly to be made we bind ourselves our and each of our heirs Executors or (page 270) administrators jointly and severally Witness our hands and seals this fifteenth day of December A. D. 1834. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above named JAMES BOX has been duly appointed administrator of the estate of TALIFERRO SHELTON deceased now if the said JAMES BOX shall well and truly perform all the duties which are or may be by law required of him as such administrator then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force. administration of his estate by the heirs of said estate do the postion to said Court To the and therefore that the goods and chattels rights & credits which were of the said TALIFERRO SHELTON at the time of his death may be well & truly administered. We by these presents give to JAMES BOX (In where fidelity in his behalf are much confide) full power and authority to administrator all and singular the goods and chattels rights & credits which were of the said TALIFERRO SHELTON at the time of his death to ask receive and recover the same. To pay the debts in which the said deceased _ ___ Bo___ as for forth as his goods and chattels rights & credits will ___tind according to those made and the order of law. And we hereby require the said JAMES BOX to render to said Court according to law a just and true account of his said administration. Witness ROBERT D.
