It has never been "goad". It is a variation of Rattlingourd which is from the Cherokee nation. The name was shortened to Gourd to fit with the "white" man.

also:
GOAD was the famiky name but it was often spelled Gourd or Goard by public officials and others. Sistler had 10-12 Tenn. Goad families as GOOD in 1860.
