We whose names are underwritten being warned by Constable John Putnam of Salem this 17 of may 1692 to view the body of daniell wilknes of Salem village deceased and we find several brussed places upon the back of the said corps and the skinen and many places of the gratest part of his back seemed to be prickt with an instrument about the bigness of a small awl and own side of his neck and ear seemed to be much bruised to his Throat and turning the corps the blood Run out of his nose or mouth or both and his body not swel'd neither did he purge elce where: and to the best of our judgments we cannot but #[think] apprehend but that he dyed an unnatural death by sume cruell hands of witchcraft or diabolicall act as is evident to us both by what we have seen and heard consarning his death.

member of the First Church of Salem in 1661 and was admitted freeman in 1665. In 1689, he and his wife, to whom he married 26 February 1651, were original members of the Salem Village Church. Sarah (Waters) Ray died 19 May 1700, age 70, and Joshua Ray died in 1710. He was the son of Daniel and Bethia Ray who came to Plymouth in 1630 and settled in Salem in 1634.

During the summer of 1675, the Indians of New England, united with Chief Philip of Rhode Island in attacking the English settlements. In an effort to curtail the attacks, several companies of soldiers and several thousand men were "pressed" into service to search out and destroy the Indian camps and villages. On 17 January 1675/1676, Joshua Ray made a petition to the General Court stating that his son had been in Newbury on business with Thomas Haynes, and both had been impressed into service. The intention of the petition was that his son be discharged from service because Joshua had only this one son to help carry on the affairs of three families that were under his care. It seems Joshua's son-in-law, Samuel Stevens, and brother-in-law, Captain Lathrop, had been killed on an expedition to Deerfield the previous September, and the care of their families has been taken over by him. Joshua Ray also stated in his petition that Thomas Haynes was equally burdened with concerns of his brother who then lay wounded at Rhode Island and also a neighbor and friend who lay in the garrison at Hadley. Joshua also brought to the attention of the court that Thomas Haynes, being a maltster, had a great quantity of malt under hand which would spoil if he were forced to leave. The request for their release from service was granted the next day.

1678 Oath of Allegiance (Salem) as was required of all male inhabitants over 16 years of age.

Jos: Rea Sen'r gave in testimony that last night he said he hoped he should confess tho he had a hard heart, but, but he hoped he should confess.

Well say w't you will confess.

I am as innocent as the child unborn.

Do not you see God will not suffer you to pray to him, are not you sensible of it?

Why it is a strange thing.

No it is no strange that God will not suffer a wizard to pray to him. There is also the jury of inquest for murder that will bear hard against you. Therefore confess. Have you never wisht harm to your Neighbours?

Never since I had a being.

Well confess & give glory to God. Take consell.

I desire to hearken to all good counsell. If it was the last time I was to speak I am innocent.

The Deposition of Sarah Stephens aged [] & Margery Pasque aged [] testify that the 21 June Last past being improved in the holding of Jemima Rea sodainly seized with strange fitts, they heard the said Jemima in her fitts cry out much upony Nurse, Goody Cloyce & Goody Black , & said, What you cannot do it alone, & you brought this woman [to] help you: Why did you bring her? She was never complained of. Goody Cloyce (as these Deponents suppose) answered that the Devil would not suffer her any longer to be a Witch, she must be brought out: And the said Jemima complained that Goody Cloyce Pricks & Pinches her, and the said Jemima (as they understood by her discourse) was told by the said Cloyce that one Lords day when she run out of the meeting house from the Sacrament in a great rage, had her Master met her at the garrison gate just before the Fore-doer of the meeting house, to which Master she made a Courtesy, & at that time set her hand to his book & when she took her leave of him she made another Courtesy And farther these Deponents say that the said Jemima spake to this purpose in six or seven fits one after another, & that the said Cloyce had done, & bid these two deponents hold her hands that she might not so do; & also the said Jemima when recovered of her fits confirmed what she had spoken in her fits to these Deponents & further saith not.

Birth records are not available, however the minister's tax records in Salem record Joshua and a Samuel in adjacent entries for a period of years indicating it is likely they were father and son. In 'New England Families' it is said, "There is no reasonable doubt that Samuel was son of Joshua."

Lived in New Salem, in what's known as the North Field. When the North Field was laid out is unknown, but it must have been before the town records were begun. Apparently most of the original lots consisted of ten acres each. In 1655 Daniel Ray was owner of a lot was bound on the east by the North River and was south of Sherry's Cove.
He was last in Beverly.

marriage.
Death: He died before June 24, 1662.
Ship: Unknown, 1630
Life in England: Nothing is known of his life in England.
Life in New England: Daniel Ray, a seaman, was one of the
men who originally came to Plymouth Colony but quickly
removed to Massachusetts Bay. On June 9, 1630, Anthony
Annable had sold a dwelling house and "garden plot & fence"
to Daniel Ray in Plymouth. Some time in 1631, he moved to
Salem. There he held various offices, including selectman
(1636?7),Assessor (1639/40),Tythingman (1644), and Constable
(1639). At his death, Daniel Ray owned property including ?a
farm of one hundred sixty acres of upland and ten acres of
meadow.?
Family: Daniel Ray married Bethia ____ by 1637, and probably
years earlier if she was the mother of all his children.They
had two children. She was still living in 1662.
Children of Daniel and Bethia Ray:
? Joshua was born by about 1627. He married Sarah Walters on
February 26, 1651/2, in Salem and had nine children. She
died May 19, 1700.
? Bethia was born about 1630. She married (1) Thomas
Lothrop before 1652. She married (2) Joseph Grafton by June
1676 as his second wife. She married (3) William Goodhue by
1685 as his third wife. She died December 6, 1686, leaving no children.

Richard Waters is first mentioned in the records of Salem, anno 1636, where he has ten acres granted him. He was a gunsmith, and married Joyce (or Rejoice), daughter of William Plaise, likewise a gunsmith, of whom the following mention is made in the town records:
11 4th-5 mo-1637 William Plaise requested a tenne acre lott & it is granted 2ld-6 mo-1637-it is ordered yt mr Connants house, around &- half-acre of corn standing on the same joining next unto mr Juo. fisk shall be bought by the Towne for ould mr William Plase &- the Towne to mak paymen' thereof."

(Mem. -This house of Mr. Roger Conant, leader or governor of the 1, old Planters," as they were called, who had already made a settlement here before the comin- of Endicott and Winthrop, stood on the land now occupied by the late residence of the Hon. Jacob S. Rogers, deceased, opposite Derby square and the town hall.)

In a list probably made out for this appointment, the name of Willm. Plais occurs, with the fio,,ure 2 set against it, showing, doubtless, the number of his family (himself and wife.)
