    Hi Sherry,

Thanks for writing with your concerns. Yes, I do not have a Josuah Smith and Hannah Bentley and believe they must be another Smith family. The links you sent me showing Josuah Smith and Hannah Bentley as the parents of Simeon Smith do not list a source. However, it appears the mistake came from the Indiana DAR Vol. I Roster of Revolutionary War Ancestors, which incorrectly copied the Smith family Bible and confused a father and son George Smith. There has been a lot of research on this family but I believe the way I have it is correct, that our Simeon Smith was the son of George Smith and Sarah Coleman, and that George Smith was the son of Josuah Smith and Hannah Denn.

There is a book from James Cash Coleman, published in 1909, that lists Simeon Smith as the son of George Smith:

James Cash Coleman, "William Coleman of Gloucester, Mass., and Gravesend, England, 1619-1906" (Goshen, New York: Press of The Independent Republican, 1906) p. 40 [George Smith named as spouse of unnamed daughter of Joseph Coleman. "A dau. who m. George Smith; she d. prior to 1791, leaving the following children: Levi, b. Sept. 1, 1773; Hannah, Nathan, Simeon, Mary and Joseph."].

If you look at the notes I have for George Smith you will read about the confusion about Joshua and Hannah Smith and their son George. It also has this:

The Smith Family bible clearly shows the Indiana DAR Vol. I Roster of Revolutionary Ancestors incorrect -- pg. 593 of it states:
    SMITH, Joshua b. circa 1741 NY d. after 1792-93 NC m. 1762 Hannah d. after 1793. Service: Pvt Militia No 4477 Morgan District NC now Johnson and Sullivan Co Ten.. Children: Abner m. Mary b. 1785 d. 1850 Johnson Co Tenn; Hannah b 24 Dec 1763; George b. 10 Sept 1766; Nathan b. 27 June 1767; Joshua b 10 May 1769; Levi b. 1 Sept 1772; Simeon b. 10 May 1773 m. 22 Sept 1794 Hester Helms; Mary b 6 May 1776 m. a DeHaven; Joseph b. 12 March 1779; Sevier b. 26 Sept 1783; Sarah b 1 Oct 1788; Bezaleel b. 26 Dec 1790; Paul b 2 March 1793. Descendant: Clark, Ina Mae (Mrs. Lionel) No. 551357 ----- our ancestor GEORGE is the FATHER to these children -- Hannah & Joshua are the grandparents!!!!!! What a mess!

    And there is this:

In an Email from Karen Zuck on 24 Oct 2008 she wrote that discovering George Smith's parents was quite a feat. "In the Vigo County Public Library I saw when I first started an old bible and I copied down (they wouldn't let me xerox) the information. Was first starting and it was VERY hard to read. I wrote that George was the father but it was VERY confusing as to whether Joshua was (it read very much like that) or George was. The librarian told me the DAR had copied it. They had that George was the father. The genealogy group copied it before they burned it (yes, they did -- along with several others a few years later) and they had George as the father. Well, then I was perplexed. I researched for all three, Simeon, George and Joseph for YEARS - then found the will that had her children (which matched the bible very closely).

"Here are my "notes" from George if it helps. Many didn't know he'd been married before. This kind of all started as MANY in Parke County are in DAR via Simeon's brother George Smith NOT the father, but I found the father was also in the war (see below). It took a lot of doing on one of my cousin's part but the two George's are NOW separated and who belongs to whom is a-okay now. WHEW
Smith Family Bible - filmed by DAR Esterbrook Chapter, Rockville Public Library
George Smith s/o Joshua & Hannah
George Smith b. 10 Sept 1766 (this Geo & Hannah are children, not George, the s/o of Hannah)
    Hannah Smith b. 24 Dec 1765
    Nathan Smith b. 27 June 1767
    Joshua Smith 10 May 1769
    Levi Smith b. 1 Sept 1772
    SIMEON SMITH ( OURS) b. 10 May 1773
    Mary Smith b. 6 May 1776
Joseph Smith b. 12 March 1779 (believe that this is all the children with Sarah Coleman and that she probably died in childbirth with this Joseph) -- he marr. Mary "Mollie" Tyler March 1781 and he died according to her pension papers March 1803 when his youngest child was but 10)

    "Abner Smith b. 8 Feb 1782
    Sevier Smith b. 26 Sept 1783
    George Smith b. 24 July 1785
    Sarah Smith b. 1 Oct 1788
    Bezaleel Smith b. 26 Dec 1790
    Paul Smith b. 2 March 1793"

Hope this helps answer your concerns. The Smith family Bible has the correct lineage and the Indiana DAR incorrectly listed the children of George Smith as the children of Joshua and Hannah, the grandparents.

    John

    Hey, John.
Well, I just started looking at this, and already have a question.
I did not have George Smith and Sarah Coleman; so I created a second set of parents for Simeon.

I looked in your file for Joshua Smith and Hannah Bentley, and did not find them. I'm assuming the other researcher wasn't that far off that she tapped into a completely different Smith family; so do you have any idea how Joshua fits in?

Well, hold on -- I went back to rootsweb to find the tree I had used before. I think this is it - it's the same person, McKim:
    http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2085324&id=I103354027

You also might want to look at the search results, because there are 24 trees there and they all have his parents as Joshua and Hannah Bentley - none have George Smith and Sarah Coleman.
    http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?surname=smith&given=simeon&stype=Soundex&byear=1773&start=21

Could maybe your source be off?

For now I have Simeon with two sets of parents. It looks like your file comes forward in time and there is no other mention other than in Generation 1, saying he is son of.... but like I said, I just got started.

    Thanks!
    Sherry

    Research Notes:
Joseph Smith and Hannah Bentley of Connecticut had been attached as possible parents to Simeon Smith. However, research is showing that is not the case, that Simeon is, indeed, son of George and Sarah Coleman and is proven out by Sarah Coleman's father's will that mentions Simeon. Thanks to Lenore Hailstone lenhai@charter.net who contacted me with this proof, as well as provided me the names of the preceding generations.
I have deleted the Joseph Smith/Hannah Bentley family but leaving this note in case researchers still have that information.
