Notes:

John was born at his father's plantation of Poynton Manor in Charles County. His family had been prominent since early colonial days when William Stone had served as governor a hundred years before his birth. His parents were David and Elizabeth (Jenifer) Stone. His elder brothers included Thomas (who signed the Declaration of Independence) and Michael (who represented Maryland in the U.S. Congress).

John had been baptized in the Anglican Church. After the split caused by the reviolution he was an active Episcopalean. He married Anne Couden in February 1781, and the couple would have six children, five of whom lived to adulthood: Couden, Anne, Elizabeth, Robert Couden, and Thomas.

John Hoskins Stone, son of David and Elizabeth (Jenifer) Stone, was born during the year 1745 in Durham Parish, Charles County, Maryland.

During June and July 1776 he was active in the formation of the Flying Camp to relieve or to drive the British from New York and as a reward for his services he was commissioned a captain of a company composed of men from Charles County. Under the command of Colonel William Smallwood his company participated in the battles of Long Island and White Plains during the autumn of that year.

The Flying Camp was disbanded in Philadelphia early in December, and Captain Stone returned to his seat at "Poynton Manor" shortly before Christmas. He continued active in the cause and during the early part of 1777 as captain he assisted in the formation of the First Maryland Regiment. At its ultimate organization he was granted the colonelcy and commanded his regiment at the battle of Princeton and later at the battle of Germantown, where he was severely wounded. As a result of his injuries he was forced to resign his commission on August 1, 1779.

On February 15, 1781, in Anne Arundel County, Colonel Stone secured license to wed Anne Couden.

In 1779 he purchased from William McConchie and Elizabeth his wife, "Watson's Purchase" to which Elizabeth was entitled as dower in the estate of her late husband James Muncaster. On September 4, 1786, he added further to his estate by the purchase from Roger Fowke land in Durham Parish called "Burdett's Rest", beginning at the head of Burdett's Creek and running to Nanjemoy Warehouse. A few days later

bought another portion of "Burdett's Rest" of 215 acres from Sarah Fowke who described herself as the relict of Captain Gerard Fowke.

Colonel Stone was a charter member of the Society of the Cincinnati and had the distinction of being elected the third president of the Maryland chapter. He was also one of the early State Governors of Maryland.

The wife of John Hoskins Stone died on March 4, 1793, at the age of 32 years. A notice of her decease appeared in the Maryland Gazette. He died at Annapolis early in October 1804. The American of October 14, stated, "Died on Friday last General J. H. Stone after a long and painful illness".

JOHN HOSKINS STONE was born in Charles County, Maryland around 1750, probably at "Poynton Manor" in Charles County, Maryland. His education was attained in the private schools of his native state. He studied law, and then established a successful legal career in Charles County and in Annapolis. During the Revolutionary War, he served as captain in General Smallwood's 1st Maryland Regiment. Stone also fought heroically in many battles, and was severely wounded in the battle of Germantown. He had achieved the rank of colonel when he resigned in 1779. He entered into politics in 1779, serving as a member of Governor Lee's Executive Council, a position he held from 1779 to 1792. He also served as a clerk in the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Office in 1785, and was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1785 to 1787. In 1794, the Maryland Legislature elected Stone governor. He was reelected to a second term in 1795, and to a third term in 1796. During his tenure, the state loaned the national government the necessary resources to initiate construction on new public buildings in Washington, D.C. Stone also actively endorsed President Washington's policies, and an annual governor's message to the legislature was initiated. After completing his term, Stone left office on November 17, 1797 and retired from public service. Governor John Hoskins Stone passed away on October 5, 1804 in Annapolis, Maryland.

Judge Samuel Hanson was buried at Equality, an estate then owned by his son-in-law, David Stone, "the inheritor of Poynton Manor, with Court Leetand Court Baron," a lineal descendant and representative of Governor William Stone, and the great-grandfather of the Hon. Frederick Stone, of Port Tobacco, MD.

David's birth date is traditionally given as 18 Mar 1709. I was told that date came from his tombstone which is no longer in existence. David witnessed this deed 6 Apr 1727, meaning he should have been over 21 onthat date.

John Hoskins Stone (1750-1804) s/o David Stone (1709-1773) and Elizabeth Jenifer (d/o Dr. Daniel Jenifer) md. Mary Couden in 1781 and was a well known lawyer before the Revolution. His children were: Robert Couden Stone (md. Mary Mann of Annapolis in 1805); Couden Stone-died young; Anne Stone (md John Turner); and Elizabeth Stone (md. Dr. Nathaniel Pope Causin in 1808).
John Hoskins Stone had a distinguished political career from serving as aDelegate to MD Convention in 1775 to being Governor of MD 1794-1797. He was a Captain in the militia 1775-1776, commissioned a Captain in the 1st MD Line on Jan 3, 1776 and was colonel in the MD Line until Aug 1, 1779(wounded & resigned)...........

Michael Jenifer Stone (1747- died before Apr 1, 1812) s/o David Stone and Elizabeth Jenifer md. Mary Hanson Briscoe. His children were: Frederick Daniel Stone (1796-1820); William Briscoe Stone (1797-1872); Dr. Michael Jenifer Stone (1806-1877); Elizabeth Stone; and Eleanor Stone.

Michael served on the Committee of Observation in 1776, attended the Constitution Ratification Convention in 1778 and served in the LowerHouse of the MD Legislature from 1780-1783. He was a U. S. Congressman,1789-1791, and Chief Judge of the 1st Judicial District of MD, 1791-1802. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778. Resident of Port Tobacco WestHundred in 1778. Rendered patriot service by providing wheat for the useof the military in December 1782....2nd Lt., Militia, Capt George Swann's CO, Mar 7, 1776.

This David Stone was born around 1709 and died March 18, 1779. He was married to one of the Hansons, and then to Elizabeth Jenifer. He had quite a few children by his second marriage, e.g. Thomas Stone, John Hoskins Stone, Michael Jenifer Stone, and so forth. Josiah Stone and Samuel Stone were attributed to the marriage to, presumably, Sarah Hanson.

Another question, Josiah married Mary Washington Donelson or Donaldson during the American Revolution and lived in Culpeper Co., VA before moving to Kentucky around 1798. Does anyone know anything about her family?
Specifically was she from Maryland or Virginia?

David Stone died intestate on March 18, 1773, at the age of 64 years. The inventory of his personal estate was filed on February 26, 1774, and appraised at ?1,563/10/10, with Elizabeth Stone, Thomas Stone, and John Hoskins Stone as the administrators and Daniel Jenifer and G. R. Brown as the bondsmen. Catherine Scott and Betsy Anne Stone were the kinswomen.

At the final account in June, 1778, his widow had died, and Thomas Stone and John Hoskins Stone were recorded as the "surviving administrators". The balance of ?2,361/19/5 showed no distribution, according to the court records.

Thomas Stone, son of John and Elizabeth Stone, was born in Charles Countyduring 1677, according to a deposition made in 1721. He married first Martha, the daughter of Colonel Philip Hoskins. The latter died in 1714,and besides appointing Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, he named as heirs his grandson Thomas Stone and daughter Martha Stone.Oswald Hoskins, son of Colonel Philip Hoskins, died in 1721 and named bywill his brother-in-law Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, andat the same time mentioned his sister Martha Stone. The fact that he named only two children in his will and referred to other children makes it difficult to establish an absolute list.

In 1715 he, as Captain Thomas Stone being a member of the Assembly,signed a petition to His Excellency on the death of the Queen and also the petition upon the ascendancy of His Majesty, George I, to the throne.

Some researchers give Martha Hoskins as the wife of Thomas Stone, but Martha was still unmarried and single 4 Sep 1730 when she received her share of the estate of her sister Mary Hoskins. Jane and Benedicta Hoskins were the only unmarried daughters old enough to be the mother of Thomas Stone's and Robert Hanson's children. Because of the names of the descendants, I have arbitrarily given Jane to Thomas Stone and Benedicta to Robert Hanson.

In Thomas Stone's will, which was dated 25 May 1727, he also mentions or refers to only three children; David, Mary, and Anne (by naming her son, Gerrard Fowke).

To wife Katherine, extx., 1/2 dwelling plantation during life; at her decease, to son David and hrs. certain personalty absolutely and certain personalty during life to be divided among child( unnamed). 1/2 personal estate absolutely residue to two child David and Mary Equally.

NJL note: I am of the opinion that Thomas Stone married Jane Hoskins. I have several pieces of circumstantial evidence to support my opinion:
1) Jane Hoskins was the only daughter of Philip Hoskins who was old enough. Both Jane and Benedicta were named in the will of their grandfather, Alexander Wahob, written 1 Dec 1683. This would have been an older Benedicta, as the land records give her birth as 16 Dec 1685.
2) Her daughter, Mary Stone named a daughter Jenny Stone Hanson.
3) Her daughter, Ann Stone named a daughter Jane Fowke.
4) Martha Hoskins acknowledged receiving her share of her 2 brothers', mother's and father's estates in a deed signed Jul 8, 1729, and signed as Martha Hoskins, meaning she would have post-deceased Thomas Stone. Thomas' wife at his death and per his will was Catherine Boughton.

Will dated 14 Jan 1720, Chas Co. probated 6 Sep 1731; personal estate to be divided equally among brothers Bennett and Baylord and sisters Mary Ann and Martha; brother Bennett executor of this as well as their mother's Will; overseers brother-in-law Thomas Stone and William Chandler; witnesses: Ignatius Doyce (Doyne?), William Matthews Thompson and Thomas Jameson.

It is believed that Philip Hoskins was some close relation to Sir Bennett Hoskins, Bart (Baronet) (1609-1679) of Morehampton and Harewood, Herefordshire, England. Philip Hoskins was first mentioned 2 Sept 1671, when Bennett Hoskins of England gave him a power of attorney to secure Bennett's patent for the 2000 acre "Manor of Friendship". At that date he is referred to as of or near Wicomico River (present St Mary's or Chas. Co.). The second reference is when by deed dated 7 Sept 1671 he, a planter of Chas. Co. and James Hayes, a planter, purchased the 200 acre Owen's Purchase in Port Tobacco Hundred from John Owen.
Philip Hoskins was a Chas. Co. militia officer in Major Wheeler's Militia 1689-1703 and was referred to as a Colonel in 1707; Chas Co member of the Maryland House of Assembly in 1692, vestryman of Port Tobacco Church, Justice of the Provincial Court, trustee of Cool Springs, and Emissary to the Indians. He directed in his Will that he be buried in Port Tobacco Church. On 12-10-1717 he was appointed residual legatee by the will of Osmond Waple, Gent. of Chas. Co., for the use of Philip's children by wife Ann. By her father's will dated 1683, Eliza Wahob, 1st wife of Philip Hoskins, inherited a 200 acre plantation in Nanjemy Hundred, Chas. Co., MD., and bequests were made to her daughters Benedicta and Jane Hoskins. (Most of this was prepared by: George Ely Russell, Bowie, MD, May 1963. Benedicta was mentioned in her grandfather's will, too, but that was probably an older sister who did not survive, as the land records give Benedicta's birth as 16 Dec 1685.
3) Roger Fowke and Anne Stone, the daughter of Thomas Stone, named a daughter "Jane Fowke". Roger Fowke was the son of Gerard Fowke, and Sarah Burdett.
