28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of John Sanders, age ca. 51, taken regarding a parcel of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he knew of an Ignatius Mathis who is said to be the son of Jane Corkshutt. John Causeen was reputed to be the heir of the above mentioned land. Ignatius Causeen married the daughter of this deponent. (Liber CL, p. 707).
28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of William Mathis, age ca. 47, regarding a parcel of of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he was the son of the daughter of the above mentioned John Cockshutt, and that he sold part of the tract he had by his mother to Col. Philemon Lloyd, which land is now in dispute. Nov. 1700 - Hoskins et ux vs. Thomas Mudd [Jr.] Thomas Mudd [Sr.] died seized of 5 tracts of land in Charles Co.: "Bryer Wood" (150 acres), "Boremans Reserve" (488 acres), "Carnavan" (600 acres), "St. Katherine's" (188 acres) and "Jarvis" (120 acres.) Philip Hoskins, Esq. m. Ann, the widow of Thomas Mudd [Sr.] Thomas Mudd [Jr.], the son and heir of Thomas Mudd [Sr.] would not set off the widow's 1/3 to Ann so Hoskins brought suit to compel him to do so. In Oct. 1700, the Provincial Court directed Gerrard Fowlke, the Sheriff of Charles Co., to cause 12 good and lawful men of his bailywick to admeasure all the tracts and set a 1/3 part of them off as Ann's dowry. In Nov. 1700, the 12 men, including John Barron, admeasured the widow's third of "Bryer Wood" and this Fowlke reported back to the Provincial Court, together with his statement that "I am not informed of any other lands in these writs mentioned within my bailywick to be admeasured."

BENNETT HOSKINS. ESQ. received a warrant for 2000 acres of land in Charles County on 8/19/3671 called "Manor of Friendship" (Patent 16:546). His manor was on the west side of the Port Tobacco Creek. He assigned 500 acres of the Manor to PHILIP HOSKINS, with no relationship shown, who was transported into the Province in 1671/2. According to the Charles County Rent Rolls, BENNETT HOSKINS owned 1467 acres. According to a later deed pertaining to "Friendship" he died in the Kingdom of Great Brittain (Deed L#2:231).
PHILIP HOSKINS was transported into the Province of Maryland in 1671/2 (Patent 17:372). On 9/7/1672 with James Hayes, he purchased 200 acres of "Owens Purchase" from John Owen, planter of Charles County (Deed E:46,75.5) He married first Elizabeth Wahob, the daughter of Archibald Wahob and Jane Leah. When Alexander Simpson wrote his will in 1670 he left his Goddaughters Margaret Wahob, and Elizabeth Wahob, the daughters of Archibald Wahob each 120 acres of land. If they died then it was to go to their mother Jane Wahob. To Jacob Leah, the brother of Jane Wahob he left 300 acres of "Simpson's Delight" (Will 1:379). When Archibald Wahob wrote his will in 1683 he named his daughter Elizabeth Hoskins, the wife of PHILIP HOSKINS and his grandchildren BENEDICTA and JANE HOSKINS (Will 4:23).
In the births, marriages and deaths of Charles County six of their children are given. On 4/26/1694 PHILIP HOSKINS, Gent, received 100 acres, "cattle, horses, chattel and other possessions" from Thomas Love, the son of William Love, for five shillings provided he would care for Thomas Love for the rest of his natural life (Deed S:275). PHILIP HOSKINS served as a justice of Charles County and of the Provincial Court, and he was a Colonel in the Maryland Militia.
On 6/8/1683 20 acres of "Addition" was patented for PHILIP HOSKINS (Patent 24:523). On 12/14/1687 187 acres of "Hoskins' Lot" was patented for him (Patent 25:322). In 4/1705 PHILIP HOSKINS purchased "Allenson's Supply," "Mackey's Park" and "Friendship" (Deeds Z:176, 178).
Elizabeth died after 6/2/1698 when she was a witness to the will of Richard Jones of Charles County. By 12/15/1698 PHILIP HOSKINS had married secondly Ann Mathews Mudd, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Mathews and Jane Cockshot, and the widow of Thomas Mudd, with four children (Acc't 18:126). With Richard Wade, PHILIP HOSKINS was named to receive half of the estate of Lewis Jones in his will written on 2/18/1703 and probated on 3/16/1709 (Will 2, part 2:37).
COL. PHILIP HOSKINS wrote his will on 6/20/1714 and it was probated in Charles County on 4/3/1718 (Will 14:475). He left personalty to each of his grandchildren, unnamed. To his son WILLIAM he left the 100 acres he had bought from Thomas Love and personalty. His son PHILIP received 50 acres of "Friendship" and personalty. His son OSWALD received 178 acres of the dwelling plantation and personalty. His son BENNETT received 200 acres he had bought from Garrett Sinett and 187 acres of "Hoskin's Lot" and personalty. His son BAYLARD received 190J/3 acres bought of James Mackey and 200 acres of "St. John's," and a share of his personal estate. His daughters MARY ANNE and MARTHA received personalty. His wife Ann was to have the residue of his estate and then it was to be divided among his children he had by her. He desired to be buried at Port Tobacco Church (St. Ignatius Catholic Church). The accounts of the estate of COL. PHILIP HOSKINS were given on 5/26/1719, valued at £1,121.00.09. OSWALD HOSKINS, the executor of Ann Hoskins, administered his estate. Distributions were made to the five children of his second marriage (Acc't 2:22).
Ann, the widow of PHILIP HOSKINS, wrote her will on 5/6/1718 and it was probated in Charles County on 5/9/1718 (Will 14:611). She named her sons OSWALD and BENNETT HOSKPNS as her executors. They were to divide the personalty left to her by her late husband, and to care for her three other children. OSWALD HOSKINS administered the estates of his father COL. PHILIP HOSKINS and his mother MRS. ANN HOSKINS on 5/26/1719 (Adm Acc't 2:22,24). Those receiving from the estate were the children of the second marriage. On the inventory of Madam Ann Hoskins her next of kin were given as William Mathews and John Craycroft (Inv 1:316B.
By 11/15/1729 OSWALD HOSKINS and BAYLARD HOSKINS were both deceased when BENNETT HOSKINS gave the final accounting of the estates of his father, mother and brother OSWALD. These estates were divided equally between MARY ANNE, MARTHA and himself (Acc't 10:5).
In the will of Col. Philip Hoskins he named his daughter Martha Stone, his
grandson THOMAS STONE, and named THOMAS STONE as the overseer of his estate.
Martha's brother Oswald Hoskins named his brother-in-law THOMAS STONE as the
overseer of his will in 1721, and mentioned his sister Martha Stone. No record
was found for Martha's death, which occurred shortly after 1721.

(1) William Thompson, age ca. 66, that John Cockshutt came into this county with his wife and 2 children and had rights for 2200 ac. Cockshutt died before he put up rights in execution. His widow later married Nicholas Causoon, reputed to be a French man, and said widow gave her husband Causoon rights to 1000 ac. of above mentioned land. The remainder she gave to her 2 daughters, Mary and Jane Corkshutt (also referred to as Ann and Jeane). Nicholas Causoon died and left his widow and one son named Ignatius Causoon. Afterwards, his widow married a surveyor, John (or Robert?) Clark and shortly after died. Her son took possession of his father's lands. This deponent was married to Bennett Hoskins mother's sister and has a tract of land lying contigous. (Liber CL, p. 706).
28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of John Sanders, age ca. 51, taken regarding a parcel of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he knew of an Ignatius Mathis (Matthews) who is said to be the son of Jane Corkshutt. John Causeen was reputed to be the heir of the above mentioned land. Ignatius Causeen married the daughter of this deponent. (Liber CL, p. 707).
28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of William Mathis, (Matthews) age ca. 47, regarding a parcel of of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he was the son of the daughter of the above mentioned John Cockshutt, and that he sold part of the tract he had by his mother to Col. Philemon Lloyd, which land is now in dispute. (Liber CL, p. 708).
Note: several spelling errors in the above accounts. Oswald Hopkins should be Oswald Hoskins son of Col. Philip Hoskins and his fathers 2nd wife Ann Mathews (Mudd). Ann Mathews (Mudd) was the daughter of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. William Thompson married Victoria Mathews daughter of Thomas Mathews and 2nd wife Jane Cockshutt. William Mathis, age ca. 47, should be William Mathews also a son of Thomas Mathews and 2nd wife Jane Cockshutt whose mother Jane Hicks married 1st to John Cockshoot, 2nd to Nicholas Causine, and third to Robert Clarke the Surveyor. Ignatius Mathis should be Ignatius Mathews son of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. Ignatius Causoon should read Ignatius Causine whose father Nicholas Causine married Jane Hicks, the widow of John Cockshutt. Bennett Hoskins mother was Ann Mathews who married 2nd to Philip Hoskins, his mother's sister was Victoria Mathews who married William Thompson. John Sanders married Sarah Mathews daughter of Thomas Mathews Jr, son of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. Thomas Mathews Jr. married Sarah Boarman daughter of William Boarman and 1st wife Sarah Linle. Thomas Mathews Jr. and wife Sarah Boarman had a daughter Sarah Mathews who married John Sanders. Thomas Mathews wife Sarah Boarman (Mathews) married 2nd to Thomas Mudd, and Thomas Mathews Jr.'s sister Ann Mathews also married the same Thomas Mudd who died ca. 1696. Ann Mathews(Mudd) then married Philip Hoskins.
Would these next 4 items imply that Bennett Hoskins [bef 1650-bef 1725] of England was the father of Col. Philip Hoskins' [1660-1718]? Perhaps only the last three items would be enough to infer that as fact? Especially if I could lay my hands on records of the court case to which the last item refers. [1672 would be too early for this Bennett Hoskins to be William Hoskins' half-brother.]
