    Died:
    Robert Hillebrandt married before the Civil War, and he and his wife, along with his sister Alzinette, still unmarried, died during the yellow fever epidemic at Beaumont in October, 1862. (W.T. Block)

    "Nevertheless the virulent illness did arrive there, and Beaumonters were fortunate to endure only 8 fatalities, as opposed to the 150 persons who died at Sabine Pass. Otto Ruff, Dr. George Hawley, Mrs. Sylvester Mansfield, Alzinette Hillebandt, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hillebrandt were 6 of the 8 Beaumonters who died during the epidemic."

    "Hillebrandt was a an energetic accumulator of land and personal property, and in the last year of his life, he bought 3,000 steers from the estate of a neighbor and 1,500 acres of land in the north end of Beaumont.. Hillebrandt died in Aug 1858, and the inventory of his estate indicated that he owned 9,000 cattle, worth $60,000, that roamed over parts of Liberty, Orange, and Jefferson counties, and 1,000 horses worth $20,000, which along with his vast accumulation of land, made him the wealthiest residet in antebellum Jefferson County."
