Julius Horton (or Houghton) was born about 1775 in North Carolina (son of Samuel Horton and Jane Swart); died in May 1818 in Washington Parish, Louisiana.

Notes:

Julius was the son of Samuel and Jane (Swart) Horton and the husband of Susannah Purnell whom he married about 1799 at Halifax Co., N.C. After living in N.C. for forty years Julius gathered his family and moved westward. He gave his father-in-law, John Purnell, power-of-attorney for his land and property before he left N.C. Stories are that he left N.C. because he had killed someone, however, the circumstances are unknown. By 1818 he had settled in Washington Parish, Louisiana, where he "died of a fever", leaving his wife, Susannah, and their several younger children. Julius' oldest daughter, Nancy, and her husband, James W. Bulloch (an experienced soldier and frontiersman) were with the Horton family. The decision was made that the family would continue west to Texas where the Mexican government was granting new land to immigrants. (Julius' burial site in Washington Parish is unknown).
