Seeking help with corrections or additions for the children and grandchildren of William and Jane Stone of Cane Creek region of Putnam County, Tennessee. I am a decendant though their granddaughter Polinia Pearlie Patton who married Luke Johnson.

    WILLIAM STONE and JANE WELCH
William Stone Born 1799 Green County, Kentucky Died 16 March 1883 Baxter, Putnam son of Rev. Thomas Stone, a Free-Will Christian Baptist Minister, and Sally Corder. Married Circa 1829 probably in Jackson or White County near Cane Creek.

Jane "Jenny" Welch born 1805 Rutherford County, North Carolina and died after 1880 daughter of John and Mary "Polly" Anderson Welch. Jane Welch had twin children out of wedlock before marrying William P. A. Stone.

Families associated with the Stone-Welch family were the Corders, Huddlestons, Barnes, Bohannons, Maxwells, Pattons, and Choates

In some pedigrees found on Ancestry.com and LDS submission sites, William's wife surname is given as "Ashford" with a marriage date of 1 January 1836 in Cookeville, Putnam, TN. This is an error. In Sumner County TN this marriage is recorded, not in Putnam County and William Stone married Jane "Welch" not Ashford. In most records William Stone has a P. for middle initial. How ever in the 1860 Census his initial was given as A.

The History of Putnam County by Walter S. McClain and published in 1925 stated that Jane Welch's father John Welch came from North Carolina and settled two miles south east of Cookeville about 1820. Chancery Proceedings after his death show that he had accumulated about 750 acres of land in the county. Much of this land went to the illegitimate grandchildren of his daughter Jane "Jennie" Welch who later married William P. Stone.

1820 US Census of Overton Counties TN William Stone born 1775-1794 pages He came to Jackson/Putnam County with his father's family. Unmarried. But living between Cane Creek and Pigeon Roost Creek

11 Feb 1830 William P. Stone fifty acres on ridge between Cane Creek and Hutchins Creek adjacent Reuben Perkins, Samuel Richardson, James H. Carr. No. 439 Platt 1558 however a notation indicated that the actual platt survey is missing from the survey book Surveys of Jackson County TN

1830 US Census Jackson County, TN William Stone age 20-30 (Jane Welch Stone) age 20-30 2 females under 5 (Sarah Welch) born 1828 and (Mary Welch) born 1830. Jane's son Jesse Welch with grandfather John Welch and daughter Elvira Welch was with Aunt Mary Ann Choate

Harris. She may have been widow of John Stone.

14 Dec 1853 William P. Stone may have been a preacher like his brothers Corder and Thomas also. A marriage record in White County shows that John Johnson and Ollay (Allie) Broyles were married by a Rev. William Stone.

The property was in Civil District No. 16 and was recorded in Book G page 62. R.L. Gentry and L. R. McClain were witnesses to the deed. William P. Stone probably moved at this time for in 1875 a deed to James W. McHenry states "William Stone's old home tract".

1870 U.S. Census of Putnam County, 1st District Household 179 Post Office Cookeville. There he owned $800 farm and a home worth $500. He is enumerated between son Hiram Stone and daughter Margaret Patton. Next to the Pattons was his son John Stone. His sons and son-in-law were farming his lands. The census taker recorded William's middle initial as "A" which is clearly a mistake. The census taker also gave the initials HW to son James Hiram. Age was 71 (1799) born in KY Jane Stone age 65 (1805) born in NC.

1876 William P. Stone according to a deed recorded 21 Dec 1876 in Book C page 129 lived just north of his son Thomas D. Stone in District 16. He

Thomas Stone, born about 1767, possibly in Surry, North Carolina, married Sarah Corder. Is reported to have "gone west" (probably to Tennessee) about 1812. Thomas and Corder Stone witnessed indentures for Davis Nores and Robert B. =============================
    Thomas Stone.
Thomas Stone, believed to be the son of John Stone and his first wife, was calculated to have been born in 1771 in Surry County, North Carolina. 246 Thomas was apparently
married twice during his life. He married first to a woman named Sarah "Sally" Corder.

Sarah was also a native of North Carolina. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in North Carolina prior to their move
    to Kentucky.

On 21 April 1792, Thomas Stone and his older brother, Corder Stone, witnessed a deed in Surry County, North Carolina between their uncle, Daniel Barrow, and Mr. Edward Lovell. 244 Sometime after this, Thomas and Sarah, along with his brother, Corder Stone, left North Carolina, and after spending a short period of time in Tennessee, moved further north into Kentucky. Although Thomas and Sarah remained
in Kentucky for several years, they eventually moved south into Tennessee, where they settled in White County. Thomas Stone acquired 684 acres of land in White County, Tennessee on 10 May 1808, which was situated on Cane Creek, a branch of Caney Fork of the Cumberland River. 251 Thomas and his brother, Corder Stone, were later found on the 1812 list of taxable property in White County. 245 Thomas Stone?s first
wife, Sarah Corder, is believed to have died in White County, Tennessee.

After his first wife passed away, Thomas married for a second time in about 1824 in Tennessee to a woman named Elizabeth Williams. 249,250 Elizabeth, who was a native of South Carolina, was calculated to have been born there in 1793. 246 According to the 1830 federal census of Tennessee, shortly after their marriage Thomas and Elizabeth settled on a farm in Jackson County. 252 Thomas, who was a farmer and Minister by trade, subsequently died in Jackson County, Tennessee.

NOTE: Unfortunately, several of the children enumerated on the pre-1850 censuses of Jackson County, Tennessee did not match up well from census to census. As a consequence, additional research is needed to identify all of Thomas Stone's children from his first marriage.

Those children listed below, however, are either known, or are considered very likely to be children of Thomas Stone and his first wife, Sarah Corder. The exact order of birth
of some of the below listed children is not known, however. Although most genealogies indicate that Nancy was the eldest child of Thomas Stone and Sarah Corder, this appears to be contradicted by indenture between Ireby W. Stone and his father, Thomas Stone, which was entered into on 5 March 1814. Because of the date and contents of this indenture, it would appear that Ireby may have been born as early as 1793, and therefore the eldest child.

    Other-Begin:
mentioned in letter from Enoch to his cousin Alene, stating, " It as I have it is that Grand Pa's [Enoch Herschel Stone] father was "Tom" Stone [Thomas Stone] and that he married a Williams (Elizabeth Williams--FWW). I just cannot remember the name of Tom's father and mother, which I think I used
to know. Tradition has it that they descended from
W.M. Stone (William Stone--FWW) 1603-1660 Proprietary Governor of Maryland appointed by Lord Baltimore. As to its being a fact you will know just as well as I."

    Notes:

The History of Putnam County by Walter S. McClain and published in 1925 stated that Jane Welch's father John Welch came from North Carolina and settled two miles south east of Cookeville about 1820. Chancery Proceedings after his death show that he had accumulated about 750 acres of land in the county. Much of this land went to the illegitimate grandchildren of his daughter Jane "Jennie" Welch who later married William P. Stone.

    Depositions taken: 18 Nov. 1847..

    DEPOSITION: GEORGE WELCH..

About the age of 69 years..

On the 19th May 1841, John Welch requested me to write his Will, in which he devised to his wife Polley Welch five tracts of land, in all 143 acres, including the farm and improvements whereon he lived, together with all the household and kitchen furniture and farming tools, stock, etc. during her natural lifetime and after her death the same was to belong to Jessee Welch provided he acted prudently in supporting his grandmother Polley Welch, and all his personal property, except what they acquired during her lifetime (which was to belong to the said Jessee) was to be sold and divided among his lawful heirs..

He also gave to his six grandchildren, the children of Ann Choat, deceased, 175 acres of land and Thomas Choat, their father, was to have the use of said land free of rent as long as he chose to. He also relinquished his right and title to 90 acres of land where his still house stood and one brown filly and [unreadable]. The Will which I wrote at his request and now have in my possession does not state to whom it was relinquished. My impression is it was to David Anderson. All the other lands sold and equally divided among his heirs except a six acre tract on the Mountain south of his house that he give to Jessee Welch, and the said John Welch, being sick but of sound mind and disposing memory at the time I wrote the Will was attested by Joseph Pearson and John B. Pointer and on the 21st day of May 1841 the said John Welch requested me to make some alterations in his Will which I did as he directed. He gave his wife six acres more of land, his Blacksmith tools and two notes of $100.00 each and at the death of his wife Polley Welch it all was to go to Jessee Welch together with the profits arising from the same. The balance of this, the second Will, was in substance about the same as the first. My recollection is confirmed by the second Will giving the ninety acres of land and the brown filly to David Anderson. The second Will was attested by Jacob Harpole and John B. Pointer, and I was appointed executor to both Wills and some after that the said John Welch directed me to destroy the Wills, which I done by taking his name off..

I heard John Welch say that Jessee Welch was the best boy he had raised..

Sometime in Sept. 1846 said John Welch being sick I visited him when the following conversation took place. He remarked to me that if he was to drop off that Jessee Welch and Elvira Welch would get nothing and that he had a notion to make Elvira Welch a deed to some land where Jessee Welch then lived and also to give Jessee Welch a deed to the place where he then lived and to let Jessee give his wife Polley a bond for her maintenance her lifetime and for Jessee to move in the house with his wife Polley and said he, what do you think of it. I told him I did not think it a good plan, for that Jessee was young and might run through with it and have the old lady in an awkward situation. He then observed that if he could sit up and write that he could put it in the deed and that we talked some three or four times together before the writing was done and it was always to the same import in conversation with said John Welch about writing the deeds to Jessee Welch and Elvira Welch. I suggested to him the name of R. G. Burton and he said that Burton had to go to Gainesboro to Court and I then mentioned Lee R. Taylor to which he consented and I named to Lee R. Taylor what had taken place and he said he would give an answer before he left. He then said if I would dismiss my School the next day and be with him that he would come and do the writing for him and the next morning I told John Welch what conversation had taken place between myself and Lee R. Taylor and the agreement was that the arrangement was to be made and I went and [told?] L. R. Taylor accordingly..

We went on and the said John Welch directed me where to find some papers so that he could write the deed to Elvira Welch [smear]. Lee R. Taylor then commenced and wrote a deed from John Welch to Elvira Welch for 320 acres of land, dated the 5th of Oct. 1846 and after said deed was written I saw Lee R. Taylor read the same to the said John Welch and he approved and signed the same and Lee R. Taylor and myself attested the same. After he signed and acknowledged the deed, Elvira Welch came in the house where we were and the said John Welch handed the deed to Elvira and said here is a plantation I give you and if you tell it I take it from you. She held the deed a short time and I said to her to give it to me and I would take care of it for her and she handed it to me. We then went to dinner..

After dinner we went in the room where the said John Welch was and Lee R. Taylor commenced writing the deed from John Welch to Jessee Welch, containing about 283 acres, more or less. When Lee R. Taylor came to setting out the land he was at about where the courses of the Home Tract or the beginning corner was and the said John Welch remarked that there was a plat of the home tract and we was looking for it and he directed me to look in a table drawer and I did so and found it and give it to him. He then pointed to the beginning corner with his finger and directed him to commence there. He then wrote according to the plat of the home place and then directed him to embrace one other tract of 100 acres, also one of 33 acres. After Taylor had finished the deed and postscript [?], he read them over to him. He took the deed and looked over it and then signed and acknowledged the same and Lee R. Taylor and myself attested the same. I believe him [John Welch] to have been of perfectly sound mind and disposing memory at the time he executed the Wills and deeds above mentioned..

    Notes:

Thomas Stone. We know that John and William were brothers, and we think they may have had a brother, Thomas. However, we have not been able to ascertain the identify of their parents. We use Thomas Stone here as a place-holder.

John Stone, possibly son of Thomas Stone, born in Fauquier County, Virginia, abt. 1725; married --- Corder, born about 1730, presumed to have been a daughter of John Corder. John Stone and his brother William are said to have been among the first settlers in Surry County, North Carolina, possibly in or before 1765.

That John Stone, father of Enoch, married a Corder is a matter of conjecture, apparently based on the fact that he named his third son Corder. Additionally, it is said (but not verified) that John's first son, Enoch, had a son named Thomas Corder. Record of the marriage has not been found, however.

John and his brother, William, are said to have come into Surry (then Rowan) County, North Carolina, from Fauquier County, Virginia. Of this, there seems to be fairly good evidence. A John Stone, a William Stone, and a Thomas Stone had established themselves in Fauquier's Elk Run district by 1748. Butlers, Conways, and Corders also resided in that district. William married Hannah Conway and had, among others, Ezekiel Stone (born 1756) and Conway Stone (born 1761). Among soldiers in the War of the Revolution, we find Ezekiel Stone, who volunteered from Surry County, and Conway Stone, who volunteered from Granville County, North Carolina. Additionally, Conway Stone is named in the will William Stone made in Surry County on 23 March 1819. That William and Thomas were brothers is supported by property records of Fauquier County (see below), but no such evidence has been found in Fauquier to support a brotherly relationship between William and John. For this we rely on the account written by Jane Elizabeth (King) Stone in 1906.

John Stone and brother William were probably Baptists. Says the author of Stones of Surry:

When Baptist Ministers began to visit and preach in Virginia, they gained many ardent supporters and from 1760 through 1780 there was a large organization of Baptists traveling through Virginia; a goodly representation went to Southern Virginia and Western North Carolina. The Stone family caught the fever and named children for the prophets of old: Ezekial, Enoch, Ephraim, etc.
John may have been a preacher. There was in 1786 a John Stone among the Baptist Ministers of the eleven churches in the Yadkin Association. However, we have found no evidence to corroborate that John, father of Enoch, and John, the Baptist Minister, were the same man. Surviving records suggest that there was more than one John Stone in the area [i.e., in the Yadkin district] during the second half of the eighteenth century.

I have just stumbled over the name "Mary Corder" b. ca. 1730-1742, supposed wife of a John Stone b. ca. 1734 in Prince William County, VA. John's parents (brother and wife) are generally noted online to be Thomas Stone of PW Co., VA and Mary Butler of Fauquier Co., VA.

There is a reasonably in-depth profile of this family at http://www.familyhistorypages.com/Stone.htm and the author is very clear that this name "Mary Corder" is unproven, and based on the fact that an unproven child of John Stone was called "Corder Stone". Curiously, they also named another unproven son "Tazewell Stone".

I am curious, though, about this "Mary". Some sources say she was from Surry Co., NC, but it actually appears that the Stone family moved there in the 1760's or '70's. What little supposition I've been able to find online regarding "Mary's" parents leans towards the Fauquier County Corders (who have proven Stone intermarriages).

I quote from the above referenced URL: "That John Stone, father of Enoch, married a Corder is a matter of conjecture, apparently based on the fact that he named his third son Corder. Additionally, it is said (but not verified) that John's first son, Enoch, had a son named Thomas Corder. Record of the marriage has not been found, however."

Additionally, the author of the site supports this connection by continuing a couple of paragraphs later: "A John Stone, a William Stone, and a Thomas Stone had established themselves in Fauquier's Elk Run district by 1748. Butlers, Conways, and Corders also resided in that district."

However, I am wondering -- if there was a "Mary Corder" who married John Stone -- is there any possibility she could have been a daughter of Edward Corder of Greenway Court? The birth date range fits, and Edward Corder lived over the Fauquier County line in Frederick County. Edward's descendants moved to Tazewell Co., VA in the 1770's.

In looking at a map of the Elk Run area, I tend to agree with the conclusions of the extant researchers of the line -- if there was a Corder marriage, it was most likely with the southern Fauquier County Corders, and not the Frederick (ie: Edward) Corders, but I can't absolutely rule out the possibility of a connection. Can anyone help me prove or disprove this?

In Reply to: Re: "Mary Corder" and John Stone Family of southern Fauquier VA and Surry NC by Shawn Corder of 1178

I am writing a book on the Stone family from Fauquier County Virginia.

Here are a few points I can tell you from my research.

John Stone married a Corder. It was recorded in the Account Book of Sheriff John Crump from 1751. The account book has been lost in recent years but I have a record from two genealogists who both recorded the same information and page for the material. One was Henry Wright Newman who wrote The Stones of Poynton Manor and the other is Charles Stone who wrote the Stone's of Surry. I have reviewed Newman's actual notes from the book made in the 1930's and they reveled John Stone married ? Corder. (I suspect the unusual name caused a problem with the transcription. The wives of other Stone sons first and last names are give. He just had a ? Corder for her).
I have uncovered a deed by John Stone from Fauquier dated Sept. of 1775 his wife's name was Milley. She is likely your missing daughter. She was likely born in Prince William County in 1730. John and Milly and their family moved from Fauquier to Laurens SC in 1775. John died there in 1800 and Mildredge died there in abt. 1820. I have a copy of a resulting case dividing the homestead in 1822. John identified her in his will as my wife "Mildredge". All other references say Milley or Milly. I also have a copy of her Dower rights from Fauquier. She could only make her mark.

I also found a will for John Coder and one of the executors is Thomas Stone. This would be John Stone's brother Thomas Stone. Thomas had a daughter Elizabeth and she married a William Dulin. Also Thomas' son, Thomas had a daughter Parazaid (?) Stone who married Bayles Corder. She died in St. Helena Parish Louisiana.

From my research it appears that John and Mildredge married in 1748/49. Mildredge had children who carried the first names of other Corders. Reuben, William, Lewis, Elias. It appears some of her brothers moved to Laurens. I have found Reuben and Elias Corder living in Laurens near the Stones. Mildredge's children were John Jr., Reuben, William, Elias, Lewis, and Nancy.

Some of the Stones have mistakenly placed John Stone in Surry NC which was not the case. The John Stone, who was John's nephew, was married to a Mary. This likely caused the Mary Corder claims.

    Hope This Helps

New Southern Commander Maj. General Nathanael Greene determined that he needed time to rehabilitate his army. He decided to split his force and assigned command of the more mobile force to Brig. General Daniel Morgan. British Lt. General Charles Cornwallis recognized the strategy and sent his own mobile force under Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton after Morgan.
After several weeks of maneuvering, General Morgan finally had to choose his ground before Lt. Colonel Tarleton overran him. He settled on Cowpens, South Carolina. He counted on British expectations of a militia retreat as it had at Camden, so that when Andrew Pickens' militia withdrew as planned, the British became undisciplined and broke ranks. This loss of discipline allowed the ordered actions of the Continentals to thoroughly rout the British and destroy General Cornwallis' light troops.
