Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Davis Green was born in 1772 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia (son of Major Thomas (not son of Wm & Amey) Green and Lucy Davis); died after 1785.

Davis married Sally Creasy in 1814. Sally was born about 1772; died after 1815. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Major Thomas (not son of Wm & Amey) Green was born in 1725 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia (son of William Marston Green and Amey Clay); died after 1813 in Horsepen, Amelia Co, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 25 Apr 1761, Prince Edward Co, Virginia; purchased 200 acres

    Notes:

Thomas Green purchased land in 1761 in Prince Edward County Virginia from Peter Davis, and later married his daughter Lucy, after the death of his first wife, Ann Berryman.

The Thomas Green who married Lucy Davis -- and earlier Anne Berryman - was still very much alive in 1814 and living in the same lo cation where he had lived since about 1760. He can be found readily on th e 1810 Federal Census for anyone who cares to take a peek

    Note:
There is no documentary proof that Thomas Green's father was a William Green., plus he did not name a son, William. There is documentary proof that Peter Davis was the blood grandfather of Berryman Green, Thomas and Lucy's oldest son. Even the family history written in 1915 by Emma Green Phillips, Berryman's great granddaughter gives Lucy Davis Green as Berryman's mother. Berryman Green was born on 31 Jan 1753, probably in Amelia Co VA, as Peter Davis bought land there in 1742 and moved his family there from Goochland Co. VA.

    Good Morning Doris;
I hate to be the one to rain on that parade, but it is not even remotely possible that the Thomas Green who married Lucy Davis is the son of William Green and Amey Clay. Here are just three or four points that come to
    mind:

    1. When William died sometime after July 1744 but before August 1747, he left a rather detailed will naming his MINOR children including Thomas.

    2. In the will William basically cut off Amey as soon as she remarried -- which she did almost immediately.
At a court in July 1748, a Thomas Green Jr. (likely the son of Elizabeth Marston Green by process of elimination) petitioned to become the guardian of the MINOR children - - and was still their guardian even as late as October 1749 - - although some had married by this time.

    3. Thomas, son of William and Amey Clay, inherited much of his father's estate and was still living on a portion of that land when he DIED in 1791.
He too left a rather detailed will.

    4. Major Thomas Green who married Lucy Davis was still very much alive for the 1810 Census (Page 254) and was still alive as late as 1813, contributed some service to the War of 1812 and served as County Commissioner as late
as 1813. Lastly; he was "located" on a circa 1820 hand drawn map of Amelia County living in the same location where he bought the land from his father-in-law Peter Davis.

Taken together - - your newly found chart - - can not possible be correct.

It appears that somebody has made another "giant leap or assumption"
without even bothering to check the public records.

    Sincerely;
    David T. Green

My source says: "In the days of primogeniture, Peter Davis would not have referred to Berryman Green in the many legal documents I've found in Prince Edward county as his grandson, if he had not been his grandson by blood. Primogeniture did not go out in VA until 1787. Peter died in 1785 and his will and many other documents prior to his death always referred to Berryman as his grandson. Berryman's first daughter by Ann Pritchard was Lucy Davis Green, who married a Stephen Davenport."

Also, "there is a lot of wrong info on the 'net along with all the misinformation on Berryman re his mother (who is Lucy Davis b. 1736, NOT Lucy Davis Green b. approx. 1178-1779 who is the daughter of Berryman Green and Ann Pritchard) and Thomas Green, Sr. having a first wife. It didn't get started until after the DAR had formed. Berryman died in 1825 and his youngest granddaughter, Emily Green Phillips, wrote a history of the family in 1915 at the age of 80. In it she said that Berryman was the son of Thomas and Lucy Davis Green - which is incorrect as aforestated. Her family writeup is at the DAR."

I think the DAR has since closed this line and no more applications can be submitted on this misinformation.

    Hi Doris,

David is correct, that the Thomas Green who married Lucy Davis could not have been the son of William and Amey Clay Green. William and Amey Clay Green's son Thomas Green, born about 1725, married a Martha, and his will names their children, one of which was the Elizabeth Green who married
Benjamin Meadows. The Thomas Green who married Lucy Davis had children named in the will of Lucy's father, Peter Davis (died 1785) and the names are totally different. They were Rosana Green, Lucy Davis Green, Pais Green, and probably Judith Green who married a Mr. Wells. Lucy Davis and Thomas Green did have a daughter named Elizabeth but she married Hampton Wade on January 7, 1795.

Wheither the Thomas Green that married Lucy Davis was the same Thomas Green who married Ann Berryman in about 1753 has not been proven one way or the other to my knowledge. The dates seems to almost work out, but they are all estimates. If you work backwards from the known dates they show that
Berryman Green married Lucy Ann Prichard on May 25, 1778 at Valley Forge, Pen. and he was said to have been born on January 24, 1754 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Using these dates, his mother would have to have been born about 1730 to 1733. If her husband was the same Thomas Green that
later married Lucy Davis, and he died after 1820, that would make him about 90 years old if he was about the same age as his first wife, Ann Berryman.

These estimated dates are possible, but as I said, I have seen no proof this was the same Thomas Green.

For some time I have hoped that the Thomas Green that married Ann Berryman was the father of my William Green born Febraury 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, but it appears that Ann Berryman only had one son, Berryman Green, and she died before my William Green was born. I have a deed that shows that Thomas Green purchased 200 acres of land from Peter Davis on April 25, 1761 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, which is less than a year before my William Green was born there. I just knew that I have found my William's parents, but I have found nothing that would prove he was the father of my William Green.

To further complicate the matter a Berryman Green is also mentioned in Peter Davis' will as his grandson, which has caused much disagreement about who his mother was since Lucy Davis and Thomas Green did have a son named Thomas who married Eliza Julia Booker and she had a son named Berryman Green. This Berryman Green was a twin of Ann Flournoy Green, which is another famous Green name from another family. Berryman and Ann Green also had a brother named Carlos Green, which was a very uncommon name in that area at that
    time.

I doubt that I have help you in any way, but there are others on the list that have researched this line, and maybe one of them can help.

    Best Regards,
    Tom Green

It does seem strange, since Thomas & Lucy Davis Green had 9 children beside Berryman Green. And of course my connection is through the son, Thomas Jr, who married Eliza Julia Booker....they had 10 children [I have this from the copy of the bible records of Albert G. Green]..

    Notes:

As early as the year 1768 and again in 1772 and 1789 we find the English and Americans forming settlements within the regions then known as a Spanish province. Many of the first American settlers of Jefferson County were from the Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland, among whom the names of Green, Moss, Dixon, Harrison, Wood, Magruder, Dunbar, Benoit, Nutt, Nolan, Montgomery, Calvit, and Hunt are prominent. They settled along Cole's creek, in the region around Petit Gulf, where Rodney now stands, and near the present town of Union church in the western part. Henry Green lived on the banks of the branch of Cole's creek, in th immediate vicinity of the old town of Greenville, the original settlement there being called Greenbay. He came from Virginia with his brother, Thomas Abner Green, and the two were the pioneers of the old family, whose decendants still numerous in Jefferson County, and are scattered throughout the soundwest. Joseph K. and Thomas Marston Green were sons of Thomas Abner Green, Thomas Marston being the second delegate to Congress from the Territory. The old Green mansion near Cole's creek was famous for its substantial architecture and lofty columns.
