History of Buffalo and Erie Coounty:
"In the year 1818, John Roberts, John West, and Major Campbell came to the territory of Brant. Roberts settled on the road leading from Brant Centre to Farnham. Ansel Smith and Robert and William Grannis came soon after. John West located to the east of the Centre; his widow is still living at an advanced age, and five of their children are also living, vis.: Thomas, john and Jonathan West, Mrs. Richard Sherman and Mrs. Joseph Hill. Major Campbell settled east of the center, and after a long residence there moved to Buffalo." page 624.

    ______
One source (Bowen.FTW) states that John West was born in Saratoga County, NY. Another source (Ball.FTW) states that he was born in Cayuga Co.

IF you assume that John West was the son of George West (this is not proven), then the following has credence:

In the 1800 US Census, there were no George West men in Cayuga Co, NY, but there was one in Ballston, Saratoga, NY on p. 1082. His family shows 3 boys under 10, one girl under 10, and a male and female both between 26-44. This fits the George West family as I have documented it. John, having been born in 1796 would have been 4.

In 1810, there are only 2 George West men in all of New York State. One who does not fit was in NYC. The other was in Aurelius, Cayuga, NY on p. 1200. This family matches the George West family that was in Saratoga, quite well. It shows 1 boy under 10, 2 boys between 10-15, 1 16-25, and 1 adult male older than 45. It also shows an adult femail between 26-44. If John is part of this family, he would have been 14 and could be one of the boys between 10-15.

In 1820, there are 4 George West men in all of New York State. The one that matches best was in Scipio, Cayuga, NY. It shows 2 boys 10-15 and one male older than 45. One girl under 10, 1 girl 10-15, and one female over 45. This is not a perfect match but is the best of the lot. Note that John who would have been 24 in 1820 is not in Scipio.

While there are two John West men in Cayuga County in 1820, they are too old to be the son of George. Instead, I found a John West in Eden, Niagara, NY that seems to match. In 1820, Erie County had not yet been formed - it was a part of Niagara County. When Erie County was formed in 1823, Eden became part of Erie. This census record shows one boy under 10 (John's son George), and one girl under 10 (John's daughter, Armida). It also shows one adult male between 16-25 that would fit John, and one female between 16-25 that fits his wife Avis.

So, we have a good story going. John was in all likelihood born in Ballston, Saratoga, NY in 1796. His parents and their family moved to Aurelius Town, Cayuga, NY prior to 1810. While his parents continued to live in Cayuga County through 1820, John moved his family to Eden, Niagara (which later became Erie), NY and lived there in 1820.

Sounds good until we get to 1830. In 1830, John West is no longer in Eden, Erie, NY. There is an Asa West and a Matthew West there - but no John. I went through the census images frame by frame. The best match for John's family in 1830 is back in Sempronius, Cayuga, NY, p. 88. This family matches John's family very, very well.

In 1840, the best match is in Brant, Erie, NY on p. 170. This family also matches John's family very, very well.

In 1850, we finally know for certain that John and Avis are in Brant as the census on p. 334 lists all of their names.

Given this, we have to suggest that John moved back to Cayuga County some time between 1820 (after the census) and 1830 (before the census). Then between 1830 and 1840, he again moved back to Erie County where he stayed the rest of his life.

Note that in 1850, the George West discussed above was living in Brant, Erie, NY with Stephen West in the household next door to John and Avis. I believe that the circumstantial evidence is pretty strong that John's parents were George and Tryphena West and that Stephen was a brother of John's. But it is not proven.

My conclusion is that it is more likely that John was born in Saratoga County - not Cayuga County. But, I believe that John West lived in Cayuga County for a time as a child and again as a married man before finally settling in Brant, Erie, NY where he died and was buried.

Comments: According to "Mayflower Families in Progress: George Soule of the Mayflower and his Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations" published by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants in 2008, George West is believed to be the son of Jonathan West (see pages 38 -42). I have been researching Morgan L. West of Brant for years and recently found proof that he is the son of Joseph West who appears to be one of George's brothers. I purchased the above referenced book in Plymouth, Mass. and I believe you get it from the website for Plimoth Plantation.
