    Notes:

Joshua Jackson Mayes, one of the largest cattle ranchers of the county during his lifetime, was born in 1823 in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee, a son of Garner and Elizabeth (Jackson) Mayes. He came to Texas with his parents and siblings sometime around 1837. They traveled by flatboat down the Mississippi and on into Galveston Bay, but the boat sank at the mouth of Double Bayou. Under such inauspicious circumstances, the Mayes family established themselves on the banks of Double Bayou.

Mayes was one of two men from present-day Chambers County to serve in the Mexican War of 1846. He enlisted at Liberty on May 15, 1846 and served in Captain Hall's Company B, Second Regiment, Texan Mounted Volunteers. The only other man from the county known to have served was James Taylor Dunman, who would later become his father-in-law.

Mayes fought in the battles of Monterrey, Buena Vista and Chapultepec in 1846 and 1847. His regiment was commanded by Colonel George T. Wood, who later served as governor of Texas.

He returned here after the war and began cattle ranching. The 1850 Agricultural Census Schedule showed him with 11 horses and 150 cattle.

Josh was married on March 2, 1853 to Miss Sarah Dunman, daughter of James Taylor and Rachel (Wallis) Dunman. During the next few years, they purchased property and settled on Dorr's Island, located on the west side of the Trinity River near Wallisville. This property is now known as Mayes Island. Many live oak trees planted by J. J. Mayes are still visible.

The Mayes cattle ranch became one of the largest in the county and grew to include several thousand head of cattle. He served as county commissioner from 1862 to 1866. During the Civil War, he also served in a local Confederate military unit.

He and his wife Sarah were the parents of fourteen children. Six lived to adulthood including: George Joshua, who married Charlotte Gordon; William Fields "Bill," who married first to Molly Van Pradelles and second to Fannie Kuhlenthal; Rachel Minerva, who married Sheriff Gibson C. Davis; Elizabeth Jackson "Lizzie," who married Dr. Thomas J. Shelton; Jackson, who married Mary Louise Wooten; and Effie Clarice Mayes, who married Archie Middleton. Eight children died as infants or without issue. These included Molly Wilmeth, Frank Hardin, Richard Aron, Henry Dunman, Jonie Cora, Woodson R., Annie Viola and Lanis Edley.

Joshua Jackson Mayes died at Wallisville on January 10, 1912 and was buried in the Wallisville Cemetery.
    -------------
Garner married Elizabeth Jackson and she was born in Amelia, Virginia in 1785. They were married in Knox Co.,
Tennessee on June 6, 1808 and some time in the early 1800's moved to Williamson co.Franklin, Tennessee. In and around 1836 Garner loaded his family up and moved to
Double Bayou, Texas. This was at that time Liberty Co., Texas, but it is now Chambers County, Texas. This is positioned between Houston and Beaumont Texas on the
coast. Have you ever heard of this crew? I would love to figure out who my Garner Mayes' mother and father are,,,,Let me hear from you,
Garner and Elizabeth brought a black woman to Texas named Martha Mayes and she married a Zacariah Godfrey.
