Alex married Amelia Permelia "Millie" Godfrey, (B) after 1880 in Double Bayou, Chambers Co, Texas. Amelia (daughter of Zachariah Godfrey, (B) and Martha Mayes-Godfrey, (B)) was born in 1856 in Chambers Co, Texas; died after 1920 in of, Chambers Co, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

1880, age 26, living with her mother and two children, using last name of Brown, and states she is a widow. Children are listed as black.
Next door is a Charles H. Brown, white, age 41, born in Maryland; and wife is Nancy, two childen, Mary E age 13 and John age 12.

Looking for any desendants of Zacariah Godfrey. Born in Alabama 1825 possibly died in Texas in 1870. He married Martha Mays(es)(have large b/w picture of her.)She already had three children by a George G. Mayes(slave owner)from Tennessee. Mary Etta,Peter Adolphus,Monte Mayes. These 3 children were of caucasian lineage. The children she had by Zacariah were:Jeff,Lazarus,Solomon-Saul(Sol),Samatha,Rachel,Martha(Mag),Leon F. and Amelia/Permelia(Mettie/Melie),Margaret,Martha (6ys)GODFREY. She donated a large parcel of land to the local church for a cemetary and is buried there in the cemetary that bears her name. Located in the county of Chambers Double Bayou,Texas. I can't seem to get any more information about g-g-grandpa Zachiah. Amelia was my g-grandmother and she married an Alex VanLieu and had g-ma Annis Inez. G-ma Annis married Rev. John Andrew Carrington from Shepherd, Texas. According to the census report Permelia is listed as a Brown with two children 1.Lazario(8yr) 2.Tanny or Fanny A. Brown. Also list a Jake Brown as possible husband)I know these people had offspring that are out there that know something about their family history.

Zachariah married Martha Mayes-Godfrey, (B) about 1852 in Chambers Co, Texas. Martha was born in 1822 in Tennessee; died in 1905 in Double Bayou, Chambers Co, Texas; was buried in Martha Godfrey Cem, Double Bayou, Chambers Co, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Martha came to Texas as a slave to the Mayes family. Many years late she donated land to build St. Paul's United Methodist church and a cemetery that bears her name., the Martha Godfrey Cemetery. Her grave stone indicates she was born c1812. However, all the census records indicate she was born about 10 years later. Besides, she would have been too old, were she born 1812, to have had many of the children attributed to her.

(a descendant says she was with George Mayes instead of Joshua -- however, daughter Mary's Death Cert states her father was Josh Mayes.
