A third son of Nicholas and Mary Smith is now identified. In the "Kentucky Biographical Encyclopedia, 19th Century" posted in the Genealogy Databases of Ancestry.Com, is a biography of Thomas Smith, son of Nicholas and Mary Jones Smith.

In the biography, reference is made to Thomas' brother, Stephen, as well as to brother William and sister Keziah. The biography (published 1878) stated that Stephen resided in Missouri and was the only reaining living offspring of Nicholas and Mary. (In fact, Stephen died about a year before the Encyclopedia was published).

Many factors implicate my GGGrandfather, Stephen Smith of Saline county Missouri, as being the brother of Thomas Smith and son of Nicholas and Mary Jones Smith of Henry County KY.

GGGF Stephen was the only Stephen Smith in Missouri on the 1870 census who met age, race, and origin requirements to be the above mentioned Stephen Smith.

I have a great deal of information on Stephen's descendents. I also have a copy of his probated will, naming all of his children.

Stephen's son, Robert married Thomas' granddaughter, (widow?)Elizabeth Ann Herndon (nee Rowland), so both Thomas and Stephen were my grandparents.

Stephen's daughter, Martha "Mattie" Jane, married Thomas' son, Nicholas J. Smith.

Stephen's 2nd wife, and mother of Martha Jane and Robert, was Susan Smith, daughter of Robert Smith. All of these people were from Henry County Kentucky.

At this time, I have no idea if Susan's father, Robert Smith, is related to Nicholas Smith and his brother Jacob Smith, who is also mentioned in the biography.

On the 1830 census for Henry County, Ky., Stephen Smith and his 1st wife, Gracie Scott, were farming next door to Nicholas and Mary, while Michael Smith and his wife, Sarah Scott (Gracie's sister) were farming next door to a Robert Smith. In addition to being Gracie's brother-in-law, was Michael perhaps a cousin of Stephen and Thomas? Was Michael perhaps a son of Robert and half-brother of Susan, Stephen's 2nd wife. As a further point of interest, Michael's granddaughter, Sophronia A. O'Bannon, married Stephen and Susan's son, Nicholas Owen Smith.

I would certainly like to compare notes with anyone else who is researching these Smiths. I will gladly share any information that I have.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Smith

Thomas Smith... His father,Nicholas Smith, emigrated from Virginia, and settled five miles south-east of the pesent town of New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky. At that time the whole territory belonged to Virginia, and was a vast unbroken wilderness; and the few whites who ventured so far beyond the limit of safety were compelled to live in forts rudely constructed; and in one of these, Nicholas and Jacob Smith took up their residence, and with their families, for many years underwent the dangers and privation of pioneer life. He and his brother Jacob took out a letters patent on 1400 acres of land, 500 of which fell to Nicholas; and upon this he finally settled, and there lived and died; and there raised a family of eight sons and three daughters, who all married before his death, excepting one son, who died after reaching manhood. After his death, this tract of land fell to his son Thomas, the subject of this sketch, by purchase from the other heirs, and passed to his children after his decease. A singular fact connected with this tract of land was, that the patent was obtained from the State of Virginia, it then being part of that State, it having consequently been in two States; and in the forming and changing of new counties, it has been at different paeriods situated in four counties. Nicholas Smith married Mary Jones, a woman of great natural endowments, and eminently fit to become one of the pioneer mothers of the State. These worthy people both lived to a great age, and died and were buried on the original homestead in Henry County. Of their large family of children, but one, Stephen Smith, of Missouri, is now living, yet a vast number of their descendants are spread over the country.
