    Clarissa died from burns after a kerosene fire. Her granddaughter, Emma Francis Cochran Fisher also died after severely burning her leg.

    Notes for Edmund Buxton Cochran (Son of James Cochran and Abigail Buxton):
    "Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson Co., Michigan" 1885, p.588 has a brief sketch of Edmund B. Cochran. He was said to have taken an unimproved and unbroken track of land, consisting of 137 acres, and built a beautiful home there. Before he became a farmer he studied in public and private schools, obtaining a good education for the times. He came to Michigan in the fall of 1844, felling trees and building a log cabin 11x16 feet, in which he lived as a bachelor for several years. In 1876 he began his larger home and married Clarissa E. Bonham, whose parents were early settlers in Maryland, her grandfather was a Rev. War soldier, a native of Pennsylvania and of French descent, while her mother, Dorcas Lane, was of Scotch and English ancestry and born in New York. Her father bought land in Concord Township, Jackson Co., Michigan, and built a log cabin in the woods. There after he purchased land in Tompkins Township, where he resided until his death, when Clarissa was 15 years old. The wife and mother and died four years earlier. Of their eight children, Cora died young, Edmund lived in Washington State, John in Texas, William a clergyman of the Free Methodist Church located in Jackson, MI, Emma, Charles and Mary stayed with their father at home and Fred J., at the time of this article was teaching near Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Cochran was a Republican.
    The unpublished Cochran manuscript compiled by Emma and Mary Cochran,his sisters, said he had traveled to the eastern United States, visited Washington, DC, but decided to settle in Sandstone, Jackson, MI in 1844.

    He is listed in Vol. 33, page 396 of the Tioga Co., NY Deed Book, July 1834 with his wife Dorcas Lane, daughter of Nathan Lane and Clarissa Hyde, where they purchased land bordering that of Isaac and Ephraim Bonham.
    On page 305r, Jackson Co., Tompkins Twp., dated 9/6/1850, Zedekiah is listed with his sister Harriet. His name is spelled BONNUM, listed as 46 years old, a farmer, property $400, born in PA. Several BATES children are listed here also: Willi, 15 years b. NY; Perrin 12 years b. MI; Charles 9 years b. MI; Lester 7 years b. MI; Francilla 5 years b. MI.

    Zedekiah married Dorcus Lane in 1830 in Smithsboro, Tioga Co, New York. Dorcus was born about 1806; died about 1846. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
