The South Park Middle School building is a landmark structure in Beaumont. The South Park community dates back to 1890 when the Sparks brothers purchased 34 acres just about a mile north from "Spindletop Hill". In 1893 Jefferson County Commissioners legally created the South Park Common School District Number Six. And with the help of J.F. Kline and George Rexes along with the two Sparks brothers South Park School system was founded. Kline is credited with coming up with the name "South Park" for the little wooden school. Sometime later someone nailed the name "South Park" on the corner of the building making it official.

    Mrs. Matilda Gantz

PORT ARTHUR, Texas, Sept. 16--Mrs. Matilda Gantz, 80, widow of one of Dick Dowling's 40 fighting Irishmen who turned back a federal fleet which attempted to invade Texas at Sabine Pass during the Civil War, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning ahe residence of a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Guidry, 2001 Sixteenth Street, after a six months' illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Guidry home. Rev. Glenn Flinn, pastor of the First Methodist church, south, will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Beaumont, under direction of J.E. Grammier, mortician.
Mrs. Gantz had lived in Port Arthur for 45 years and had spent all her life in Jefferson county. Her husband served in the Civil war under Captain O'Brian. Two men were killed on each side of him in the Sabine Pass battle but he came out ofe entire Civil War without a scratch. He died in 1904.
Surviving Mrs. Gantz who was a member of the Methodist church, are three sons, Chris and Frank Gantz of Fannett and Gilder Gantz of Nederland; three daughters, Mrs. Guidry of Port Arthur, Mrs. Lena Court of Beaumont and Mrs. W. O. Minshew of t Arthur: 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    Notes:
    The Port Arthur News lists the pall-bearers as O. W. Kieth, A. M. Grayson, H. W. Hied, W. D. Smith, Glenn Lawrence and A. D. McDonald.

There is no mention of the war stories in Charles C. Gentz's obituary, nor did I find him in a list of the "40 Fighting Irishmen." This isn't to say that he wasn't there; he probably was. Still, the omissions seem . . . curious.
