(note: the "Robt seaman" is not my dad. There was another Robt Moyer in town that caused some confusion. This year was my dad's senior year at Beaumont High School. He was living at home until school was out. By Sept of this year, he had enlisted in the Army. Ruth was married, had her girls and living on Ashley Street.

Bio: William Arthur Moyer was born to Harold and Flora Moyer. His parents were divorced in the1890s, and Will stayed with his mother. After finishing fourth grade, he was taken out of school and put to work chipping mortar off old bricks for ten cents per hundred. Will's brother Preston "Ted" Moyer played drums in the Gold and Silver Convention in Springfield. He listened to Ted's records of the Capitol Band, and using an instrument book learned to read music and play drums. As his skill improved, Will began to play in groups, like the Capitol Band and the Springfield Watch Company Band. Even as he excelled in his music, Will pursued other activities including painting, carpentry and radio.
Will went to work in Springfield at Bressemer's Department Store, where he met Rosa Mae Snider. They were married on Christmas night, 1912, in their new home at 620 S 12th St.
In 1916, Ted called and offered Will a job with the government. Will moved to San Antonio and worked as a timekeeper at the Remount. He was laid off after the Great War and moved back to Springfield for a year. He then returned to San Antonhere he worked for the Postal Service.

In 1925 Will came to Beaumont, Texas, to play in the Magnolia Band. At that time, all the band members were given jobs in the Magnolia refinery (later Mobil), but their band duties were paramount. The band played park concerts, parades, ar many civic affairs. They moved into a house on Fulton Street. Not long after, he moved once more into the house at 1337 Roberts Ave., which would be his home until his death in 1982.

Will stayed on at Magnolia after the band dissolved and retired from the refinery in 1956. At the annual retirement dinner in 1956, most began their speaches with 'When I started working here...' - but Will said, 'I didn't come to the Maa to work, I came to play!' He got an ovation for that."

Some time after Rose died in 1981, Will went up on the roof to clean the rain gutter and trim limbs from an overhanging pecan tree. He fell and injured his back, which forced him into a nursing home. Several months passed, and Will Moyer dit 11:45 a.m. on 27 November 1982 at the Green Acres Nursing Home in Vidor, Texas. He was 91.

Beaumont Enterprise article re: 60th Wedding anniversary:
    The William Moyers
    60 Years Married
Guest Column by Jerri Wigington - Family Living Staff

Sixty Years is a long time to be married. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Moyer of Beaumont will reach their Diamond Anniversary this Christmas Day. They will observe it with a reception Sunday at the home of a son.
Mrs. Moyer is the former Miss Rose Snider. They were married in Springfield, Ill., on Dec. 25, 1912.
In 1916 the Moyers moved to San Antonio where he played in the San Antonio Municipal band and worked.
In 1925, they moved to Beaumont where he became employed at Magnolia Refinery (now Mobil) and, as a hobby, played in the Magnolia Refinery Band.
He played the snare drum and Mrs. Moyer said, "Naturally, he plays an instrument that makes the most noise and no music."
He also played in the official State of Texas Band, under the direction of Dr. Harry McCloud and then R.A. Douchette.
"At the end of the year, the refinry always gives a dinner for all the employees who are retiring," Mr. Moyer recalled.
"I was asked to say a few words, so I walked to the front of the room and said, "Well, I didn't come to Beaumont to work...."
"And the whole room got quiet.
"Then I said, 'I came here to play.'
"And everyone broke into a laugh."
Mrs. Moyer sews for her family and the public, too. "I really enjoy sewing. It gets me away from everything.
"I sew everything from wedding dresses to pantsuits, and pantsuits more than ever now, because more people wear them than anything else."
And now -- 60 years, 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren later -- Mr. and Mrs. Moyer are celebrating.
Sunday, they will be honored with a reception in the home of one of their three sons, Raymond, of 1765 Bandera. The formal announcement will be in the Sunday Enterprise-Journal.
Their daughter, Mrs. Ruth Eggleston of Durango, Colo., and the other two sons, Robert and Arthur, both of Beaumont, will attend -- and, of course, many friends...
    Congratulations!

note: I posted a query on Rootsweb forum for surname Blood since Grandpa had saved a couple of letters from him. I got this response:

Re: Fred W. Blood Orchestra - Springfield IL (letters)
Author: David F Date: 2 Feb 2005 GMT
In Reply to: Fred W. Blood Orchestra - Springfield IL (letters) by: Sherry Sharp

It appears Fred W. Blood never married or had any children.
He is in the 1920 census, living in Springfield IL, age 49, single, and occupation is Music Teacher - Studio.

I was not able to find Fred in the 1930 census so I believe he is the Fred M. Blood who died at Springfield IL on 28 MAR 1924. No age or birth date is given in this index record.

I show Fred was the only child of Leroy S. Blood and Allice Amanda "Allie" Beaver, and he was born in OCT 1871 at Springfield IL.

    Sherry,

I seem to recall a Blood family in Loami Township in Sangamon County. I've transcribed the 1860-1880 census for Loami Township. I received an email from someone interested in the Blood family. I'm guessing it's a different branch.

I found the Templeton's living right where the photo said they would be:

George and Emma have been married 29 years (first marriage).
Emma has had eleven children, with seven still living.

Here's my best guess on the photo: Left to right: Emma, Helen, Elizabeth, Willie, one of the two women not visible could be Florence, Leonard and Clarence. I am guessing the woman in front (about center) is Emma's mother.

If you find any descendants, I'd love an update. Part of the reason I love genealogy research is that I love a good mystery. My specialty is working with photos. I'm pretty good at identifying people in old photos. I think there's a possibity the Templeton's are related to you, maybe through marriage. I wouldn't rule it out.

Sherry: Milly and I have a couple of pictures that Dad painted years ago that we thought you might like to make copies of them and incorporate them in your website. One is a charcoal drawing that Dad made of himself and the other one is a color painting of an old Interurban car (similar to a street car) that ran between Beaumont and Port Arthur many years ago. If you would like to do this you are welcome to make copies of them. We also have an old oil painting that Dad painted of his old homestead in Illinois. Back in the late 30's or early 40's he went to David Crockett Junior High at night and took painting lessons and these paintings were the only ones he did after that. Anyway if you are interested you can call us at 753-2337 or 753-2322
or drop me an email. Have a good weekend.

From family information, sometime after my father was born in San Antonio in Aug 1921, the family moved back to Illinois for a few years. Then Will was offered a job in Beaumont, with Magnolia Refinery with the opportunity to play in a band and he happily took it. The family moved back to Texas. According to Aunt Elizabeth's write-up, he joined the Band in 1925.

general info, as I do not have this document, is that there was an "Applicaton in the Matter of Finding the Heirship of Harold C. Moyer" which states,
that Harold was married a second time to Rachel Moyer (d. 19 Sept. 1933) who already had two sons, Rev. R.A.Beaty and Jessie B. Thompson (Tompkins?). Mae Winter Buth (Ruth), granddaughter of Harold also testified. She was the daughter of Mae Winter who was the daughter of Harold. Marie Henry was another granddaughter of Harold. Marie's mother was Gertie Crutcher.

This is according to Johnny Moyer, referring to his mother, Elizabeth Deaton Moyer's research.

comment: I contacted Indiana State Library 2 or 3 weeks ago with the request that they look for an obit for Flora (my great-grandmother). A follow up call a few days later, and then a week or some days went by and then the lady called to say she found it. Great! She mailed it, and then another week to get here. It came in the mail "today" Friday, May 27, 2011. What is so awesome about this is Flora died on Friday, May 27, 1938! How amazingly cool is that!

    • Other-Begin: 18 Sep 1963; letter

    Notes:

He registered for the military in 1863 in Illinois, but apparently did not serve. In 1870 he was a laborer, then 1880 he was a railroad carpenter. After he moved back to Tennessee, he did some farming.

Letters both written by and quoted from some of the Stone family give a few more clues in to Oliver's life. They mention a daughter Cate who does not show up in the records and she is only known of because Cicero Stone mentioned in a letter in 1932 those who had died since a previous letter he had written in 1877, and listed Cate.
She is not listed in her father's household in 1870 or 1880 census. Was she first born or last born? If first born, maybe married young? But more likely born last. Elizabeth was dead by 1880. Could she have died in childbirth? She was getting at a critical age for childbearing. Oliver, widowed by 1880 census, still living in Illinois. Nellie and John and Ann are there - no Cate. Ann marries soon after, September of that same year.
In the letter in 1882, Cicero mentions that Moyers is living by him farming. It is also told that Nellie died of consumption at Uncle Anderson's home in January of 1882, that John, her brother, had come to be with her while she was sick, and she died the day after he left.
So, it's very clear that Oliver moved back to Tennessee with Nelly and apparently Cate after Elizabeth died, probably shortly after the census was taken or in the following year. His other children were establishing their own lives. John and Ann stayed in Illinois. He seemed to have no other family in Illinois and it's not hard to imagine the need of the comfort of his wife's family and their support to raise Cate was his motivation to move back to Tennessee.
Back to Cate, she must have grown up there in a close family relationship with Cicero for him to remember her specifically. He made a collective comment about several cousins had died, but then called her by name.
Then we learn from the letters that Enoch Herschel Stone named his son after him, Oliver Myers Stone, as it's said, ""our Uncle Moyers was named after Nelly's father." Oliver Stone was born in 1858. Oliver Moyers was Herschel's brother-in-law, married to his sister Elizabeth C. in about 1853.
In 1860, the families were all living in their own community in Putnam County (probably the same land, just changing county borders.) You'll see in residence enumerated as No. 773 Enoch Herschel Stone with his family and adjacent to him in Residence 774 is his widowed mother, Elizabeth (William) Stone with a couple of her adult children, Elihu Patton and Fanny. Then Oliver Hopkins Moyers and Elizabeth C are nearby in the residence numbered 781 where my great grandfather, shown as Christopher H, in the census is only 6 years old. Somehow that name evolved into Harold Charles.
Much gratitude to the Stone family for their letters and to Floyd Weatherbee who posted them to the Internet. They brought a lot of life to my great-great grandparents, Oliver and Elizabeth Stone Moyer.

(these letters are in a pdf file attached to Oliver and all the many other names of three or more generations mentioned in the letters.)

Letter written in 1963 by Enoch, son of Cicero, to cousin Alene, wherein he quoted from this letter, written by Enoch Herschel to his brother Elihu.

(dated Apr 9, 1882 from White Co, Tenn)
Quote: "Cicero [Cicero Constantine Stone] still lives at Bloomington and Vick [Lenora Vick Stone] lives with him. Newton [Isaac Newton Stone] is there going to school. Herschel [Elihu Herschel Stone] is still living at his Uncle Geo. Anderson's [George W. Anderson, hus of Phama]. Aut is now at home. Moyers lives close to me and farming. Cleopatrae & Omega, Euclid & Mary
are all at home growing finely. Minerva has only had
two children. Mary is the youngest will be 7 years
old the last day of July."

This old letter was headed White Co. Tenn. and dated
    April 9, 1882.

Now quoting a little further from the same old letter,
Quote: "I suppose Phama, wrote you about the death
of Nelly Moyers, she died last January at her Uncle
Geo. Anderson's with consumption. John her brother
came to see her while she was sick, and I think she
died the next day after he left."
    (see attached letter)

    Other-Begin:
Letter written by Enoch Garnet Stone, son of Cicero, in 1963 to his cousin, Alene. In it he quotes from a letter that had been dated 9 Apr 1882, written by Enoch Herschel, his grandfather, to Enoch Herschel's brother Elihu.

Quoted from Enoch Herschel's letter of 1882, "Moyers [Oliver Hopkins Moyers, husb of Elizabeth C. Stone (d bef 1880)] lives close to me and farming."

Then Enoch Garnet continues, "Now quoting a little further from the same old letter,
Quote: "I suppose Phama [Phama Lovina Stone], wrote you about the death of Nelly Moyers, she died last January at her Uncle Geo. Anderson's with consumption. John her brother
came to see her while she was sick, and I think she died the next day after he left."

I quote the above to show you that Uncle Moyers was named for Nelly's father, who I am quite sure married Elizabeth, who was grandfather's sister, i.e., I know he had a sister, Elizabeth, and am quite sure she married Mr. Moyers. He is the one who lived in Nashville, and Ridley Stone was my brother who lived there for many years until he moved to California."

Page 179 - It is accepted tradition - a tradition borne out by local facts - that the first house in Fairfield was built by the Barnhills. They had entered the land from the Government, upon which the town was laid out, and had lived there for some time before, and thus may be termed the first settlers of the town, as well as the first of the township. This first house stood a little north of the present bank building, but on the opposite side of the street, near the marble factory. It has passed away with other landmarks of the pioneer days, and the spot now is only known by a few of the older citizens..... John Barnhill built the second residence in Fairfield on the lot where Mr. Thomas L. Cooper's handsome brick residence now stands. It was of logs, and was built by Barnhill just after his marriage which took place about the time of laying out the town.
The elder Barnhill, the patriarch of the Barnhill family, died in Gallatin County before any of the family moved to this section, as we have stated in a preceding chapter, and his widow came here with her children among the earliest settlers of the county. Hardin Barnhill was the eldest son, and John, mentioned above, was the second, while Andley was the third and youngest. The family at one time was a rather numerous and prominant one - prominant in business and local affairs but of no particular pre-eminence. they were honest, industrious, honorable, faithful and accommodating - kings among their kind, fine types of their class, with instincts keenly whetted in their struggle for existence against the wild game, the ferocious beasts and the murderous savage. The Barnhills have now been dead for many years, with no lineal descendants surviving them nearer than the grandson of the Widow Barnhill - "Jeff" Barnhill, as he is called. Even he is growing old and is becoming bent with age and infirmity. There is much in the history of the Barnhills that recalls a type of that day. They had been admirably trained, or had trained themselves, for their place in life and in security and content had lived out their span, tilling to fullness their measure of ambition."

Hello Sherry!! I emailed you earlier tonight but not sure if you got it or not and then I found this message...

My husband's 3rd great grandmother was Susan Snider/Snyder... She was a sibling to John Warren Snider/Snyder... Their parents were Abraham Snyder/Snider and Elizabeth Craig... Still searching on a marriage date for them...

I just started searching this line and found two of the Snyder kids settled in Christian. John and Susan's sister (just one of their siblings) Nancy married Jacob Kline in Jersey County and they settled in Christian County also...

I am glad I found your post... I was looking for death dates of John and Louina Jane... I can't find John in the 1920 census so I thought maybe he died pre 1920-- Do you have him in the 1920 census somewhere?

Thanks for the info and let me know if you want any of the info on other siblings... I have quite a bit as far as kids and census records... Like I said I just started researching this side so haven't got much more than census and children right now...

    Hope to hear from you!!

    Juls

Hello... Just read your post on ancestry...

I have birth and death dates for John Warren Snyder's parents also and have pics of their stones... they are buried about a quarter of a mile from my house...

Here are the children of Abraham Snyder and Elizabeth Craig (who was born in North Carolina)...

    Susan-b. 1832 (my hubby's 3rd great grandmother)
    Nancy b. 1836 mrd. Jacob Kline 10 Feb 1859
    James b. 1838 md. Rebecca ??? (can't find a marriage for them)
Hannah b. 1840 md. George Marion Piggott
    John b. 1842 md. Louina Jane 9 Oct 1866
    George b. 1848
    Catharine b. 1850 (I think March of 1850)
    Joseph b. 1852 md. possibly Mary E. Buckley on 18 Jul 1872
Abner b. 1857 mrd. Mary Isabell East on 6 Nov 1881

All the marriages listed happened in Jersey County, IL...

I am having some trouble with finding George and Catharine but just started so many more rocks to be turned over... LOL

So far I have only found John being in Civil War...

Abner and his wife are buried at Hardin Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun, Illinois... Will be taking pics soon

I also believe James and Rebecca are buried there also... I am waiting on my friend to get home from her weekend away with her hubby to look in the cemetery book for Calhoun County...

I am wondering if Nancy and Jacob Kline are buried in Morrisonville Cemetery also like John and Jane are???

Okay once I get everything into my program I will send you the program...

    Glad to meet you!!

    Juls

From Susan to Hannah or John were born in Smith Co., TN... The rest in IL... I "thought" John was born in TN but according to the Illinois Civil War Detail Report says he was born in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co, IL...

    Funny thing about Hannah...

Susan married Dr. James A Piggott... Dr. James was married before and had 4 children... one being George Piggott... Hannah married George last 1860's.. So Susan was George's step son but also her brother-in-law...

Hannah and George (husband) and one of their adult children are also buried at the cemetery near here... George and Hannah had a set of twins that died as little ones who are also listed to be buried at the same cemetery... Need to stop by there this week and see if their stones are still there..

Death was attributed to heart trouble, from which the decedent had been suffering off and on for some years. The coroner's jury was composed of Dr. G. Gundry, Judge w.F. Nail, Samuel Riggs, Leo Stocks, Orville Reish, ( ) Pope.

    Hi Sherry,

I couldn't find him in 1860. So I went back to 1850. Then I went back to 1860 to find anyone that was in the household with him in 1850. I think he is Jeffries. Probably his nickname??
