Surnames: Yates, Shelton
My earliest land record of him is a land record on June 25th, 1747 on the south side of Dan River in Brunswick Co., VA. The name on the land record is Yeates. That's as far as I could find on him. Next land record is on March 1st, 1773 on the south side of the Dan River in Pittsylvania Co., VA and William Shelton also was granted land on March 1st, 1773 but on the North side of Dan River in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Moving backward from there, I have William with a land grant on May 23rd, 1763 on the north side of the Dan River in Halifax Co., VA. All of these land grants are in the same area but the county names change throughout the years. Still on the Dan River, though. I haven't been able to link our John Yates to a parent, though. I haven't done any real research on my lines in a few years. I've hit deadends on them all.

This family record for William Shelton is highly inaccurate. Each piece of data belongs to someone different to a degree.
First of all, the date of birth and place of birth and baptism belongs to the son of Crispin and Letitia, but nothing more is known about their son.
The death date belongs to the William "of Dan River" Shelton who did marry Hannah Yates and had 9 children with her.
The notes are also inaccurate as they also belong to different men. The 1782 Pittsylvania county census lists my William "of Dan River" Shelton with 10 whites and 2 blacks and he is in the listing done by John Wilson and there are no other Sheltons listed in the area. Hannah's brother John Yates, Jr. and their father are listed in the same listing of John Wilson's because they also live on the Dan River nearby.
"Shelton County" by April Miller does not list William "of Dan River" Shelton, but rather the son of Crispin and Letitia, if she lists any Williams at all. I do not own her work because my lines are not listed there.
The children listed here for Hannah Yates and William Shelton are NOT the grandchildren of Crispin and Letitia. This database needs to be cleaned up and corrected. Too many people are finding these inaccuracies and not proving the data for themselves. This is sloppy work and I should know because this connection to Crispin is all my fault, so I am working to correct my mistake.
Please remove Hannah, the date of death and the children. They do not belong to the Crispin lineage at all.
1782 Census Pittylsvania County, Va He had 10 whites and 2 blacks in his household
Shelton County By April Miller
Tina Hall wants to make sure everyone knows that this is not the son of Crispin Shelton as was previously thought.
A List of Titheables between Bush and Buffalo Rivers taken by Thomas Scott June 1755 list a Joseph and William Shelton.
William Shelton had 400 acres at the end of the White Walnut Mountain beginning at the head of the north Fork of the White Walnut Creek then extending on the braches of Sandy Rr. 12 Nov 1764.
Titheables 1767 William Shelton 80 Acres. not sure if it is this one or not.
