Died:
John died in Whitsett, Live Oak County, TX while visiting his son, William Dewitt Shelton. Family notations indicate he died of TB and they sneaked his body out of Whitsett and brought his body to his father's house (Steve S Shelton) where they held the family service and then buried him in Lytton Springs Cemetery. This may be why I have never been able to find a record of his death in county or State records. My only finding was the Lockhart Post Register (which I just found via newspaperarchive which I subscribe to) announcing his death and services and burial.

Husband of Sarah Frances "Sadie" Byrd/Bird (reportedly American Indian; family lore Cherokee, but not known). John Elbert Shelton reportedly met Sarah F. Byrd when he went into town with his father shopping and her family was also in town, their eyes met and it was love at first sight and he took her from the reservation. We believe John & Sarah likely married in Madison County ca 1868-1869 as they are found in the 1870 Census living as newly weds

William married Susann Annie Duckworth about 1870 in Texas. Susann was born on 19 Sep 1855 in War Eagle, Benton Co, Arkansas; died on 25 Jun 1940 in Gonzales Co, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The "Madison County History Volume II" indicates that Stephen & Dartha came to Leon County ca 1854 and owned 845 acres and that both are buried in the Old Shelton Graveyard (distroyed). Have been unable to find anyone in Leon or Madison county records that know where this "distroyed" Old Shelton Graveyard was located and how/when it actually got distroyed. We assume it may have been on the property that Stephen/Dartha owned, but find no land records on the 845 acres either.
