    Headrights of Orange Co., Virginia

Headrights were grants of 50 acres of land per "head" - or
per white male over the age of 16 who transported himself to the colonies. They appear in the Court of Common Pleas in the county in which the land was granted. The attached file includes the headrights copied from the Orange Co., Va Court of Common Pleas in the 18th Century. These headrights function as the only real immigration record for English, Scot or Irish immigrants in that time period. The headright identifies the country of origin and generally the port of entry in the colonies.

    Notes:

. Stephen Jones married Miss (--?--) Poole? circa 1755 (The Benjamin Poole family of Quakers residing in Loudoun County were too young to have been the parents of Stephen Jones wife. If his wife was indeed a Poole, perhaps she is a sister to Benjamin as that timing would be better. However, the Poole family came from Bucks County, PA. Benjamin Poole's father was Joseph and he died in Bucks County. It is not likely that the Jones family came from that same county). (John Reedy)

  3. 10.  Tobias Bright was born in 1760 in Virginia; died on 13 Sep 1801 in Shelby Co, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Tobias Bright was the eldest child of Albertus and Patience (Hopkins) Bright. Neither the date nor place of his birth is known, but he was probably born in Virginia, for Albertus was there between the years 1755 and 1777, and as Tobias received a grant of land from Governor Moultrie of South Carolina in 1785 (a month earlier than his father) he was evidently of age then, so must have been born in the early 1760's. He married Jane Ford, who it seems certain was the daughter of John Ford, Sr. The record of their marriage has not been found but their eldest child was born in 1787. Tobias and Jane (Ford) Bright moved from South Carolina to Kentucky sometime betweenm August 1789 and 1791, the birth date of their son John W. Ford. They first lived in Fayette and Montgomery counties, later settling in Shelby County on a farm west and nearly opposite that of Albertus Bright.

Tobias died 13 September 1801, and Jane 17 March, 1817. They were buried in the grove on the home farm, but when the Eminence Cemetery was opened, they were moved to the family lot there.
