"Bud" Barney Courts, 76, of Vidor died May 10, 2002 at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital. A native of Beaumont and resident of Vidor for thirty-six years, Bud was an operator with Mobil Oil. He is also a United States World War II Navy Veteran. Survivors include his three sons, James Courts, Dewaine Courts, and Bubba Courts and his wife Cheri all of Vidor; three daughters, Kay Gonzales and her husband Robert of Pasadena, Wanda Courts of Humble, and Stacy Courts of Vidor; sister, Jeanie Bonin and her husband C. J. of Vidor; twelve grandchildren, Amber Johnson, Reginald Johnson, Andrea Gorgy, and Melissa Sweeney all of Houston, Cody Courts, Kerry Courts, Justin Walker, and Jaisa Walker all of Vidor, James "Buddy" Courts, Jr. and his wife Alison of Nederland, Steven Whitfield and Lauren Whitfield both of Austin, and Dewaine Courts "Hill" of Lumberton; four great grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Hi Debbie, As you know I'm a desc. of Thomas & Annie Johnson Court through their youngest daughter Lucretia. She married John Lane DeForest & 2nd Antonio Canavaro.

My Grandmother keeps asking me to find VAN Court, she says she remembers him from when she was a girl, she's now 94! Anyway I did some searching & DID find a Van Albert Court, Jr. b. 1924 & died 1997 in Live Oak, TX. Found this through the social security index. Also it seems he too had a son named Van Albert Court, III. Today Granny remembered that Van Court, Sr. had married Orpha Stanley & Orpha's sister had married a Harris. Now, I don' t know about Van Court, but what I have in my file -- and I don' t know if you have it or not -- but I have a Bertha Stanley married to Barney " Big Bud" Courts, 12 Feb 1947 in Beaumont. Since these people are still living, I'm not posting to the site. Anyway, their kids were: Dewayne, Willie Kay, James, Barney Noah, Wanda Lucille.
I think maybe I got this from Kirby Courts. But Barney Courts: s/o Bert Wakefield Courts, s/o Henry Clifton Courts, Sr. & Ulalaya Lena Gentz. So, maybe this will be a clue.

Henry Clifton "Cliff" was a cowboy as a young man. He was a Pony Express rider. He carried the mail between Sabine Pass and Harrisburg Houston), Texas. Most of his life was spent in the lumber industry with Reliance Lumber, Chris Grey L, and Kirby Lumber Co. He was a good friend of John Henry Kirby, the lumber tycoon. He named his oldest son Charles Kirby after him. Cliff was upset for the rest of his life because the Government had all the long leaf yellow pine trees cut down during the first World War. They were to be used to build wooden ships for the troops going to France. The ships were never built, but it spelled the end of the great lumber boom in ast and Southeast Texas. All of his sons worked in the timber industry at this time. Coley told me the Neches River was full of square timber all the way back to East Texas at this time.
Cliff had six children in a previous marriage. The family died of yellow fever in the epidemic of the 1880s. My father Coley said, his father would never talk about his first family.
The first record of Cliff on the census is 1880 in Jefferson Co, Texas. I believe, according to family history, that all the Courts lived in the Sabine Pass area. A masssive hurricane in the 1880s completely flooded this area. All of thes and kids were floated out of this area on feather matresses. The families ended up in the Nederland-Port Neches area. Cliff and his family eventually settled in the Beaumont area before the turn of the century. Many members of the Courts family still live in the Port Neches area.
