Notes: JOSEPH SR.'S OCCUPATIONS: Delegate from Virginia; member of the colonial House of Burgesses; served on the committee of safety in 1775; delegate to the State constitutional convention of 1776; served in the State house of delegates in 1776, 1777, 1780, 1781, and 1783-1785; Member of the Continental Congress in 1777 and 1780-1783; appointed judge of the Virginia General Court January 23, 1778, and resigned in October 1779; reappointed to the same court November 19, 1789; member of the State convention in 1788 which ratified the Federal Constitution; major general of State militia. Joseph married Mary Taliaferro about 1742. Mary (daughter of John Taliaferro, Jr. and Mary Catlett) was born in 1722 in Spotsylvania Co, Virginia; died between 1771 and 1777 in Spotsylvania Co, Virginia.
