Research Notes:
1870 census for some reason shows head of household as John Reggs - but this a mistake. Her husband's name was John Meguess.
Perhaps it got confused in that Josephine Dubois had married a Joseph Thomas Riggs (not John); 9 May 1864, St. Martin, Louisiana.
After Josephine's death, land settlements were being handled among the children, and on 27 Mar 1893, Nolbert was granted deed from J.P. Landrum and Ozia Meguess Landrum (his sister). The deed was granted to Nolbert Meguess Riggs.
To clear this up, in 1920 Nolbert submitted an affidavit that his name was Nolbert Meguess, not Riggs and surmised where the name Riggs came from. He went into detail of his siblings and his father John Meguess, and included Margaret Babineaux, his half sister by his mother's 1st marriage. The death certs of all of John Meguess' children each list their father as John Meguess, which verifies this.
Josephine is shown as Miguess in 1880 census and living next door to the Dugets, a son of which her daughter Margaret Babino was to marry after that census was taken.
The same Josephine did marry Joseph Riggs/Reggs in 1864. Babineaux had died in 1862. Her first child with Meguess, Ozia, was born 1869. So, it looks like her marriage with Riggs had ended by about 1867. It is also looks like her children did not know of this marriage or Nolbert would have had an idea where the name Riggs came from. Somehow something got confused when the census was being recorded in 1870, and the census taker entering Riggs by mistake instead of Meguess.
The genealogy for Josephine's children would be the Meguess line, not Riggs.
