We do not know the parentage of Evan Jones. There was more than one Evan Jones in Chester County in this time frame. We have eliminated immigrants Rees Jones and Cadwalader Jones as parent possibilities. The name Jones in Chester County seems to stem from the Welsh "John" and with the Welsh naming pattern might have been "Evan son of John..."(some other surname). Since Evan was also a Welsh surname, it could also be the reverse!

Evan Jones may also have come directly from England with a group to purchase land, as a 1703 land deed for 1665 acres in Goshen, Chester County, refers to land late of "...Evan Jones & Company...." This land had been granted by William Penn's commissioners. This land also adjoined land "late of Evan Jones." (This land of course may not have belonged to our Evan!). We do know from his will that Evan Jones had a sister Jane Jones Benson. Jane Benson also signed as family at the wedding of daughter Mary Jones.

To son Richard Jones and Ann his wife the income and profits of the plantation where I now dwell until my grandson Thomas Baily arrives to age of 21 at which time I give ½ thereof including mansion house to said Thomas Baily. The other ½ I give to son Richard and Ann his wife during life, at their death to their children if any. Otherwise to be sold and proceed divided among my residuary legatees. The ½ devised to Thos. Baily to go to same if he dies under 21. To daughter Ruth Hayes £50. To sister Jane Benson £20. To granddaughter Sarah Starr chest of drawers. To son John Jones £5 having done sufficiently for him heretofore. Executors to sell plantation containing 200 acres in West Whiteland. Evan married Sarah Woodward on 22 Dec 1726 in Bradford MM, Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Sarah (daughter of Richard Woodward, (immigrant) and Deborah Stanfield, (immigrant)) was born about 1706 in Chester Co, Pennsylvania; died on 28 Aug 1769 in Chester Co, Pennsylvania; was buried in Uwchland Meeting Burial Ground, Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Richard married Deborah Stanfield, (immigrant). Deborah was born about 1684 in Garten, Chesire, England; died about 1737 in Chester Co, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The children of Richard Woodward and Mary Nayle were the following: Henry, John, Deborah, Richard, Mary, possibly Alice, unnamed child who died young, and Thomas.

Thomas, (b. 11/7/1722, d. 6/15/1785), married a widow, Elizabeth Kirk Jacobs, (b. 1/5/1721, d. 1/25/1812), on 10/26/1745 at Nottingham Meeting, Chester Co., PA. (More on Thomas Woodward).

Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children: Rebecca, Elizabeth, Samuel, Thomas, Deborah, Mary, Timothy, and Susanna.

Samuel Woodward, (b. 8/9/1750, d. 2/28/1814) had two wives. His first was Sarah Jackson, (b. 3/4/1750- d. 10/14/1791), who died leaving 9 children. They were Susanna, John, Samuel, Sarah, William, Thomas, Levi, Rachel, and Rebecca.

William Woodward was born 1/23/1782. He married Sarah Bolton, (b. 9/28/1782-9/1/1856), at Old Kennett Meeting on January 15, 1812. One of his descendants possesses the marriage certificate. The Old Kennett Meeting still stands along Route 1 near the intersection with Route 52 in Kennett Township, Chester County, PA. It is open to the public one Sunday per month in the summer. William was the first of our direct line to settle in Kennett Township. He died June 13, 1856 in Christiana Hundred, DE.

William and Sarah had three sons: John Jackson, b. 1812, Washington Bolton, b. 1814, and Isaac, b. 1817. John Jackson married Hannah Mattson , November 7, 1838 at Old Kennett Meeting.

John Jackson Woodward (1812-1875) had three sons: Albert Mattson (1839-1926); Adolphus Darwin (1841-1929); and Theodore Bolton (1843-1916). All members of the Woodward-Mattson clan are descended from any one of these three sons. Albert, Darwin, and Theodore were all successful farmers in Kennett Township, Chester County, PA

Richard married Mary Nayle in 1705 in Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Mary was born on 24 Sep 1684; died in 1748. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
