There is a reference to J.T. as "Dr."
Civil War - Enlisted on August 7, 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B of the Texas State Troops Cavalry. He was 40 years old at the time, entering the company as a private. Records in the Texas State Library indicate that he was stationed at Camp Wood near Liberty five days after his enlistment.
1870 census showed real and personal property valued at $10,500. "The most obvious documentary evidence of the impact of the Reconstruction can be found in the census and tax records kept both befoe and after the war. Most property holders suered. With much of their material wealth tied up in newly enfranchised slaves, such a downturn in personal wealth is hardly surprising."

Letter found in file at Heritage Park.
"Your father and my grandfather (2nd husband of Susan Shelton Kirk) both fought for the Republic of Texas and through the Mexican War. Was in the Battle of San Jacinto and a great many others both the Mexicans and Indians and when Mexico wantd to take back a part of the territory from the Rio Grande to Gaudelupe. General Zachery Taylor got a regiment and fought them clear back into Mexico. But he told his men when they were ready to cross the Rio Grande all that had families could go back, so grandfather returned. But your father went right on and fought in the battle of Monterey and wanted to go straight on, but the government took part of General Taylors men and sent them around by boat to General Scott. So General Taylor and his men turned north, conquered New Mexico and lower California and on their return buried the bones of some of the American soldiers who had been way laid and killed. Then there was a lull in fighting until the war between the States.
"When the Federals slipped in and took Galveston everything was aroused. A.C. Shelton was on the job and was made a leiutenant under Capt. Richard Dowling. General magruda in Charge. They recaptured Galveston and had to hold if for monthst the Federals went around and thought they would come in through Sabine Pass. A.C. Shelton was sent to hld the Pass with 40 men, and they sank and captured their boats as fast as they entered and the Federals gave that up. That was considered the most brilliant defeat of any battle of the army and Jefferson Davis awarded the company a gold in honor of the occasion. Then A.C. Shelton was in the battle of Pleasant Hill and Mansfield La.
"Now I hope this will be as much consolation to you as it has been a pleasure to me to write it. You and your daughters can all go in the Daughters of the Republic, also the U.D.C. if you are not already members. I am a member of both. Wenn on your father's record in U.D.C. (United Daughters of theConfederacy) and my grandfather's D.R.T." (Daughters of the Republic of Texas)

He was a veteran of the Mexican War. Listed his occupation as a carpenter, mustered into Confederate Army on Apr 21, 1862 as 2nd Lieutenant in Company F of Spaight's Battalion. Records maintained by Capt William B. Duncan of Liberts lists height as 5 ft, 10 1/4 in, described him of florid complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair. Promoted to 1st Lt in Aug of that year. He became ill in Mar 1864 and was hospitalized in Liberty until March 1865. Returned to Chambers Co after the war and died in Wallisville on Jan 18, 1881.

    Sherry,

Saw your post on the Chambers County Rootsweb site and don't know how Caroline Wiggins/Amos Clinton Shelton are related to my maternal Wiggins of Chambers County.

My Mother was Ruth Wiggins b 20 Apr 1906 DeRidder, LA d 17 Jan 1977 Houston, Harris Co., TX buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston the twin of Freddie Wiggins d 2 Jun 1906 buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, DeRidder, LA. The parent's were William Arthur Wiggins & Amedella "Della" Bailey.

William Arthur "Will" Wiggins, Sr b 24 May 1880 LA d 27 Dec 1964 Houston, Harris Co., TX buried Woodlawn Cemetery. He was the son of Arthur H (Hopkins?) Wiggins and Mary Minerva "Puss" Dowden.

Arthur H Wiggins b ca 1842 LA d on or around 14 Sep 1906 in a fight at a saloon in or around DeRidder, LA. after being hit over the head with a plank/board after being involved in a fight which included his step-son Preston "Press" Burge, Henry Boyd & Bob Slaydon. It is believed that Preston Burge was the person responsible for the death of my great-grandfather after Bob Slaydon was charged and went to trial but after testimony from Preston Burge's sister, Bob Slaydon was found not guilty.

John Wiggins, son of Daniel Prairie and Lucy (Whatley) Wiggins was born 27 May 1817, Catahoula Pa., LA., and married Jan 1840 in Catahoula, LA to Elizabeth Griffin b about 1842 LA. John d 30 Jul 1859 Chambers Co., TX.
