She married John Carson, a farmer and teacher of subscription schools/surveyor. He was the son of William Carson and Margaret Grizzle born in Greene Co, North Carolina. He died January 28, 1826. They were married June 21 1804 in Dandridge.
They were Presbyterian by faith and had nine children, all born in Dandridge, Jefferson Co, Tennessee. Nancy died at home on September 26, 1851, and was buried at Blackburn Bridge Cemetery, Summerville, Illinois.

John was a farmer and Justice of the Peace, and a Presbyterian minister with interests in politics and church. In 1773 he lived on Beaver Creek in Abingdon, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War, he fought at the Battle of Kings Mountaid is named on a monument in Dandridge, TN. He was buried in February 1808 at the Old Cemetery, Dandridge, Jefferson Co, Tennessee.

On September 25, 1780, John was one of the band of our hundred men who, under Col. William Campbell, joined forces with their compatriots under Shelby and Sevier and marched over the Smokiesand wiped out Col Ferguson's force of British Regulars and tories at the famous Battle of King's Mountain. Her seved seven year s in the militia of Washington County; in 1737 he received from North Carolina for his services a military grant of 400 acres on Long Creek in Green County. When John Sevier was elected governer in 1784 of the State of Franklin, he appointed John Blackburn Justice of Peace. Later, wher he became Governor of Tennessee, he again appointed John Blackburn Justice of Peace.

Hopewell Presbyterian Chruch in Dandridge, started in 1785, John Blackburn listed as an elder in 1816.

First County Court for Jefferson County held at home of Jeremiah Matthews, on July 23, 1792. John Blackburn listed as one of nine magistrates.

According to Tennessee Daughters of the American Revolution accounts, John Blackburn served in the Virginia Militia 1776-1783. He was in the Battle of King's Mountain, commanded by William Campbell. In the name of God amen. I John Blackburn of the County of Jefferson and State of Tennessee being in perfect held, mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of my body: knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die do this tweneventh day of August in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and five make and ordain and declare this as my last will and testament, and do hereby dispose of my estate real and personal in manner following.
First I give and bequeath unto my son Andrew Blackburn that part of land survey'd off to him including his improvement where he now lives be it more or less within said lines to be his and his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son William Blackburn that tract or parcel of land I bought from Doherty where he said William now lives to be his and his heirs forever.

My will is that my well beloved wife, Jenet during her natural life or widdowhood, be furnished with a good horse and saddle which shall be kept for her use at her pleasure, also a good cow; a bed and furniture; all provided out of my estate;ich James shall always keep for her and if her horse or cow should die or become unfit for use then James shall provide one for her; and also shall provide all things needful for her support as diet and raiment that she may live a comfortable life, free from all worldly care as far as possible.
I will that my well beloved wife have the command of the house and so much of the house furniture as she may think
proper for her use during her natural life or widowhood and at her death James shall have all that she possessed, her wearing rel excepted which shall be at her disposal at her death, and if she should marry, her horse,m saddle, cows, bed and furniture and half of the house furniture shall be hers.
I will that James pay unto his brother George the balance of three hundred dollars as compensation for his part of the land, and in consideration thereof he, said James, shall have and possess all my personal property not otherwise disposed on this will; such as horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, waggon, and all farming utensils.
I do hereby make and ordain m well beloved wife Jenet Blackburn and my two sons Andrew and William Blackburn Executors of this my last will and testament and also I hereby make void all wills, testaments, and legacies by me heretofore made.

Tradition says that the family of Benjamin Blackburn was of Scottish-Irish extraction and came to America from Ireland about 1724. Where they landed, where they first settled, the exact time of arrival, and on what ship they came is unknown at this time. Benjamin Blackburn came to America with his parents, his brothers: John, Will, and Samuel, and other relatives. Since the Blackburns were friends and neighbors of the Mathews family in Winchester VA and Dandridge TN, and Mrs Annilu B Odil (1942) says she found a record of one Alexander Mathews in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1695, in Deed Book #1and also mentions a John Blackburn in the same county - we are inclined to believe the Blackburns landed in Norfolk, VA about 1724, then moved up to Chester County, Pennsylvania, then to Winchester, VA in 1742.
Tradition also says that Benjamin Blackburn was with Washington's forces at Braddock's defeat. This tradition has passed from Nancy Blackburn Carson, a grandaughter of Benjamin Blackburn. Furthermore, this Benjamin is referred to as "General Blackburn" in the "Annuals of the American Pulpit" in a sketch therein of his grandson, the Reverend Gideon Blackburn. It may be that this was a complimentary title bestowed upon him because of his military services against the French and Indians or perhaps the writer of the sketched confused him with his son, the General Samuel Blackburn, who served with distinction in the Revolutionary War. That he was in the conflict is also born out by the record in Vol. III of Hening's Statutes that he was one of the men from Frederick County, Winchester, VA, who each received 11 pounds and 2 shillings for their services. Mrs Clifford Long, now deceased, of Mt Pleasant TN stated that she was a decendant of Ambrose Blackburn, and that Ambrose and Benjamin were brothers and both were present at Braddock's Defeat. The writer has never found anything to substantiate this relationship escept the fact that their grandchildren, who lived in Maury County, TN called each other cousin and when in 1855 a number of the family of Ambrose Blackburn moved to Texas they were accompanied by a number of the family of Edward Rose Blackburn, a grandson of Benjamin.

Benjamin was the grandfather of Dr. Gideon Henry Blackburn, founder of Blackburn College in Ill and minister of the Great Awakening. GHB established the First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, AL.

Per Anna B. McSpadden: Benjamin Blackburn came to America 1724 from Ireland with parents, brothers John, Will, and other relatives. Will drawn August 10, 1786. Proven August 1791.
They seem to have come from Frederick Co, VA about 1742, then on down to the neighborhood of Steele's Tavern (present name in 1941) about 1770, near Providence Presbyterian Church and were neighbors to the McCormicks (of reaper fame) and theele family, then in 1784 Benjamin followed his sons John, Robert and Archibald down into the Wautauga Country, where his sons had migrated about 1773. Benjamin purchased for 150 pounds 200 acres in Washington Co, State of North Carolina. Benjamin, in his will, gave to each of his grandsons named Benjamin a bible. It is interesting to note that he had a namesake in the family of each of his children mentioned in the will except in the family of Samule, who died without issue (furnished by Sylvia - Yartep@aol.com)

"The following will supplement material presented in the genealogy entitled "The Mathews (Mathes) Family in America" by I.C. Van Deventer -- Alexander Printing Co., 1925. Further research has disclosed important early records.

Alexander Mathews came with the Doak family in the Scotch-Irish immigration from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania, later following John Lewis and Ephraim McDowell into Augusta Co., Virginia. In an unpublished manuscript, "Finley - Shields" by Major Albert Finley France, of Annapolis, MD., he says that James Doak, his wife Elizibeth, and five children, Samual, David, John, Robert and Thankful emigrated from North of Ireland to America, landing in Newcastle, Delaware in 1708 and settled in Chester Co., PA.

An error in the data handed down in the family has the immigrant ancestor written as "George", this is not correct, subsequent research shows that his name was Alexander Mathews. This family dropped the "W" from the name and has been since been spelled "Mathes". Alexander is said to have went from Pennsylvania to Augusta Co., VA in 1737, mentioned in "Abstracts of Augusta,Co., by Chalkley" in 1746, (Vol. I, p. 25). His first Land Grant was from The Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax, baron of Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia for 400 acres on September 14, 1749, and went on record in the Northern Neck Book "G" at page 321.
Another grant of land for 265 acres on Aug. 6, 1750, is recorded in Northern Neck Book "G" pg 405. These tracts of land in Augusta Co., by the division of Counties, were successively in Frederick Co., Shenandoah, Co., and Warren Co. He later sold 265 acres to James McNeill in Frederick Co., Deed Book 3, pg 392 on Feb. 4, 1755. A deed dated Nov. 26, 1783, from Alexander Mathews, Sr., to his son James, conveys a certain part of a tract of land near Flint Run surveyed by George Hume, bearing date Aug. 6, 1750, containing 132 acres.

In 1757 when George Washington was a candidate for the House of Burgesses, the name Alexander Mathews appears on a list of persons who voted for him.

The will of Alexander Mathews dated Sep. 5, 1783 is recorded in Will Book "B", pg 499, Shenandoah, Co.,VA., witnessed by Abraham Keller, James Hutchison and John Netherton, (we believe that this is Sarah Netherton's relative).
