Jabez Nichols (Sr.) was born December 20, 1728 in Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Records show he was married to Hannah Broughton and Hannah Mirick, although they may have been the same person. Jabez and Hannah Mirick were marrn Sturbridge, Worchester County, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1741. I am unable to find any record of the date of marriage of a Hannah Broughton, nor of any parentage of either Hanna. Jabez and Hannah had eight children, including Jabez (Jr.). I do not have a date or place of death for either.

Jabez married Hannah (Mirick) Broughton on 4 Jan 1742 in Sturbridge, Worchester Co, Massachusetts. Hannah was born about 1722; died after 1763. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

There was a Thomas Merrick who was the constable in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts in 1650. He may have been a relative (father?/ grandfather) of Hannah.

William Nichols of Springfield appears to have been one of the early settlers of Brimfield, though he evidently died before the distribution of the land to the original proprietors, as Lot 8 is apportioned to "William Nichols' heirs." The descendants were afterward large land owners from the Tower Hill road westward, and the dwelling house now occupied by L.A.Cutler, and supposed to be the oldest in town, was built by Capt. Samuel Nichols nearly 125 years ago.

William Nichols was born about 1677 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He appears to have been one of the early settlers of Brimfield, although he evidently died before the distribution of the land to the original proprietors, t 8 is apportioned to "William Nichols' heirs."

William was married to Sarah Bliss April 23, 1712, in Brimfield.
She was born October 1681 in Springfield or Longmeadow, daughter of Samuel Bliss and Sarah Stebbins. Both Bliss and Stebbins are prominent names in the early puritan settling of Massachusetts. The Bliss line is traced back to the 1500's in England which includes Hulings, Penney, Easton and Lawrence; the Stebbins line also goes back to the 1500's in England and includes Wright, Lamb, and Whiting.

William and Sarah lived in Brimfield where they had seven children, the last of whom was Jabez (Sr.). I have no date or place of death of William. Sarah died in Brimfield on February 26, 1750.

William married Sarah Bliss on 23 Apr 1712 in Brimfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. Sarah (daughter of Samuel Bliss and Sarah Stebbins) was born in Oct 1681 in Longmeadow, Hampden Co, Massachusetts; died on 26 Feb 1751 in Brimfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The following account is reported in 1636 - 1675, Early History of
Springfield, an address delivered 1875, 200 year anniversary of the buring of Springfield by Indians.

1671. On a Sunday, Aquossowump, and Indian, entered the home of Sam Bliss. Although the Bliss attempted to stop him, the Indian took 20 fathum of wampum from Mrs. Bliss' wooden chest. The Indian was arrested, identified by the children, and confessed. He was fined his "spare coate & ye wampum found with him" which was delivered to Sam Bliss, and was given 20 lashes. Samuel married Sarah Stebbins on 2 Jan 1672 in Springfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. Sarah (daughter of Lt. Thomas* Stebbins and Hannah* Wright, (daughter?)) was born on 8 Aug 1654 in Springfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts; died on 6 Nov 1721 in Springfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. Notes:

"Life and Times of Henry Burt of Springfield," Henry M. Burt and Silas W. Burt, 1893, pg 236 states "His daughter Sarah, by his first wife, married January 2, 1672, Samuel Bliss, son of John and Patience Burt Bliss." This is in error because the first of John and Patience Bliss children was born in 1668.
