"The schooner Hercules, from Campeachy, loaded with mahogany, was found high and dry on the beach about 18 miles southwest of Sabine Pass. The vessel seemed to be entirely new and registered 174 tons. She was closely double-reefed, and her mainsail and other sails were blown out of the bolting ropes. The whole crew were picked up last Sunday and taken to Beaumont in a shattered condition, where their wants were promptly attended.
Joseph Smith and John McCall were found on board the vessel. The cargo of the wrecked schooner was estimated to be worth at least $10,000 or $12,000, being composed mainly of costly mahogany."
