Text: Abel Scofield is a native of Lee County, Virginia. He was born April 26, 1833, a son of Joshua and Ada (Warren) Scofield. He has been twice married, his first wife being Hannah J. (Greathouse), to whom he was wedded March 26, 1852. She died May 12, 1900. They had eleven children, only 4 of whom are living: John, born March 10, 1853; Jesse M., October 17, 1855, died in infancy; Francis E., June 26, 1857, died May 12, 1863; James M., March 4, 1858, died August 4, 1894; Henry M. and Thomas F., twins, February 28, 1861; Sarah E., November 9, 1863, died in infancy; Emma, March 29, 1866, was wife of M. His second wife was Mrs. Florence Beck, whose maiden name was Bozarth, to whom he was married June 16, 1900. They had three children, only one of whom is living: Josiah M., born May 20, 1902; Margaret M., March 25, 1901, died April 7, 1902; Hester E., October 17, 1905, died in infancy. Mrs. Scofield had four children by her former marriage: Benjamin F., born September 18, 1884; Bessie, January 6, 1890; Eva, June 12 1892; Delassie P., May 30, 1894.

Mr. Scofield moved to Iowa in 1849, remaining there till 1853, when he came to Missouri and settled in Clark County. Two years later he moved to Macon County, and remained there till 1862. He then came to Adair County, where he has since lived and farmed. He has lived on his present farm for the past thirty-two years. It consists of eighty acres and is situated about two miles southeast Pure Air.

During the war he served with the Home Guard and State Militia. He belongs to the G.A.R., and has been a devoted member of the Methodist church fifty-eight years. He helped to build the first church ever erected in this county, west of the Chariton River

19 Mar 1858, bought land in Macon Missouri from his father in law, John W. Greathouse and wife Clarinda, 120 acres for $332. John W. Greathouse (brother of Henry E. Greathouse)

    Court 1867 , Adair, MO
Note: John W. Greathouse Sr. sent his children to live with daughter Hannah (Greathouse) Scofield when he went off to join the civil war. The family thought he was dead. Hannah's husband Able Scofield petitions the court to sell John's land to care for the children. John appears at the second hearing and reclaimed his children and his land. He had been married to Elizabeth Nelson for 5 years at that time. 8

    Research Notes:
The Scofields seem to be related to the Stones. In fact, family history has it recorded that Welcome Scofield b c1810 Indiana, was the father Charlotte who married William Harrison Stone. But it has been confirmed that she is indeed an Andrews and proven by the marriage record of her son Andrew which states his mother is "Charlotte Andrews."
I have been unable to find Welcome Scofield b c1810.

Still it seems there is a relationship of some kind between the families because in 1900 Adair Co, Missouri Census is residence 21/22 William H Stone, Charlotte (Andrews), dau, Sallie & son-in-law Seth Dain.
residence 22/23, M.R. Stone and Nettie
residence 23/24, G.W. Stone and Mary and kids

residence 24/24 Johnson family (William S age 33; wife Jennie, sons Glenn and Richard, and mother Mary, b Aug 1832 Illinois, parents b Missouri (unknown if Johnson family any relation to the Stone family)

residence 25/26 Abel Scofield, b Apr 1833, Virginia (age 67) widower, father New York, mother Virginia. Farmer, head of household - living alone

Also, Abel has a grandson thru his son Matthew named Welcome Scofield, born in 1867.

Research shows that Abel Scofield is son of Joshua b c 1800 NY and Ada Warren. Abel's brother Matthew Bell Scofield is shown in 1870 in Lima, Adams Co, IL, living next door to the Painters. Mrs. Painter is Susan Lutman Stone, widow of a Charles H. Stone b 1830 PA. One of her children was named Liza Bell Stone. Bell name is of interest.

Abel's father Joshua is a contemporary of Welcome Scofield and could be brothers but have found nothing to prove or disprove it.

Charles H. Stone (1830 PA) has not been identified either except this coincidence in the census records and speculating that he could be bro to John Z. Stone (b 1824 PA).

It looks like the common link to the families might be a Bell family. Much more research needs to be done.

    Good morning
I am Jo McHenry Medlock Henry And Lydia Hoskins Hyden are my Richard Hyden Parents.
I was in contact with A Lady in TX that was Clarkey descendent .my 3 great Granddad Richard
Hyden moved to TN. He married Sarah Lane Dau. Of Joseph & Rebecca Bowman Lane they were from Amherst co. VA. They had moved to TN to. They lived in East Tn. Finally moving to Bradley co. Tn. We had a lot of wrong information about Richard Hyden wife. One of our group found a
Court case in Bradley Co. TN. That named the children and Sarah Lane as Richard Hyden
Wife of over 50 Years. No Caldonia Bird Cherokee as his wife. E.L. Ross wrote a book and he
Was the one that said that. The Court case answered a lot of what we thought we knew but
    Found out it was wrong.
I have tried to find out where Henry and Lydia Hoskins Hyden are buried I know they were in
Aquia Episcopal Church records but they are not listed in the Cemetery Records.
I remember The Lady From TX had a Dau. In VA. She visited. Do u know her?
    Regards Jo
