    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 25 Oct 1850, Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co, Texas

    Notes:

Emily died sometime before 1860. How long beforehand she died is not known. We only know that she was alive in 1854 when the last girl Mary was born. The census of 1860 was taken on July 11th, and the four girls had been taken in by three family members, all living in close proximity to each other. James has not been found in the 1860 census. He had been a soldier in the Mexican war and also was in the Civil War. Possibly he was away in military service.
Alzina, the oldest at 12 years old, and Mary, the youngest at 6 years old, were both living in the John McCall household (Residence 361 in census record) where their grandmother Mary Johnson Hayes Gallier was also staying.
John had just married Martha Ann Garner, also daughter of Matilda Hayes Garner and sister of Ann Garner McCall. They had married in January of the year before, but she is not listed in the household and is not found in any 1860 census record.
Matilda, the 2nd oldest, is next door (residence 359), living with her aunt, Matilda Hayes Garner and husband Jacob Garner and children.
Nancy, 8 years old, was taken in by her cousin, Ann Garner McCall whose mother Matilda, next door, who took in her sister Matilda. Ann was married to James McCall, brother of John McCall. Also living with them was John Johnson, a cousin. They were living in residence 358.

    • Residence: Between 1836 and 1837, Jefferson Co, Texas; Republic of Texas

    Notes:

    Birth:
Suggestion that he was b after children bt on 4 Jun 1797, Susanne, Amelia, Wm & Jacob. Jacob last of those 4 b 1794. However if b aft 1797 - we have Catherine b 1797 - would have to be after her making him too young to have his first child Amelia b 1813.

His wife Marie Johnson b 1796 (confirmed as bt at 7 y-o in 1803. making her 17 to have first child - marrying at age 16. I can't see him younger than that.

It's reasonable that a 12 y-o would not be bt with younger siblings. They were "grown up" quite young and he any number of reasons why not with the others. But granted, I need to study the 1810 census. If b 1785, in 1810 would be 25 and gone.

    followup - his age group:
    1810 b.d. 1795-1800 10 to 15
    1820 b.d. 1776-1794 26-44
    1830 b.d. 1781-1790 40-49

we had recaluclated him to be 1795 to accomodate 1810.
1820 fits, almost - by one year - or a few months
her b.d. is definite, and she was not categorized correctly
1830, by then maybe he guessed and could easily be off 5 yrs. Conclusion: 1795 is reasonable.

not yet determined when he came to Texas, but associated families started coming around early 1830s; so that's best guess.

James* married Maria I* Johnson about 1812 in Louisiana. Maria (daughter of Moses** Johnson and Nancy** Anna Robert) was born in 1796 in Louisiana; was christened on 7 Aug 1803 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana; died after 1880 in Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co, Texas. Johnson, Mary (Moses & Anne Robert - residents of this parish) bt 7 Aug 1803 at age 7 yrs. Spons: Daniel Gallaghan & his wife. Fr. Louis Buhot (Opel Ch.: v 1-B p 309)

They must have moved to Jefferson Co sometime between 1830 and 1834. James died some time thereafter. Marie remarried Francios GALLIER, JR. in Jefferson Co. She was apparently widowed again by 1870 as she was living with her son James, JR, in Taylor Bayou and in 1880 at age 83 with her granddaughter Mary Hayes HEMMINGWAY. Also listed in 1880 was her g-dau, Missouri Hayes Hemmingway. Listed as Blind -- said father from S.C., mom from MS.

child James Madison Court child James Hayes, Jr.
child Helmer Samuel Courts child Matilda Hayes
    child Claudie Gentz
Helmer Samuel Courts m Claudie Gentz, 1st cousins, once removed.

1850 census: living with Marie & Francis Gallier were their granddaughters Eliza and Melissa Ann Myers. Melissa Ann Myers m James Chambers.

1860 census: age 64, midwife, LA, living with John McCall, husband of her granddaughter Martha Hayes; however Martha is not listed. Francis is living with the Myers granddaughters, Eliza now married to Alvin Morgan and two young children, and Malissa is also there. Only speculation that Francis and Mary are both helping with family situations rather than than being separated. She is in census residence 361 and Francis is in 363, only one residence between them.

It is believe the first settlers (under Mexican government then) in this area were the Burrell brothers, David and Robert, who lived on the tract of land at Taylor's bayou, which the Mexican government titled to David. That was in the third dade of the 1800s. Other families in that section in the early 1800 were W.H. Smiths, Joseph Roberts at a place now known as Hampshire, Tap Ashworth who lived south of the bayou, John Jap French who settled on the north side of the bayou.
Joseph Gallier, James Taylor, Bennett Blackman, William Carr, Lovan Hamshire, Joshuah Harmon, Michael Pevito (a Frenchman from New Orleans) David Garner, David C. Lawhon, Taylor White, are all the settlers of the 1830-1850 era. They settledn the section of the waters known as Bayou Las Flores, Rosebud bayou, Mayhaw bayou, and Turtle bayou. Taylor's bayou was named for Taylor White.

A complete roster of Captain O'Brien's company cannot now be located. There are two men still residents of Beaumont who were members of that company, Jacob Gallier and H. W. Potter. From Mr. Gallier it is learned that Andy McFaddin , a member of Captain O'Brien's company, was killed in a Louisiana battle in a sugar field near Fordoche and that Robert Burrell, another Beaumonter, had a leg shot off
