"The schooner Hercules, from Campeachy, loaded with mahogany, was found high and dry on the beach about 18 miles southwest of Sabine Pass. The vessel seemed to be entirely new and registered 174 tons. She was closely double-reefed, and her mainsail and other sails were blown out of the bolting ropes. The whole crew were picked up last Sunday and taken to Beaumont in a shattered condition, where their wants were promptly attended.
Joseph Smith and John McCall were found on board the vessel. The cargo of the wrecked schooner was estimated to be worth at least $10,000 or $12,000, being composed mainly of costly mahogany."

    Residence:
Land titles at Sabine Pass remained clouded until 1845. In 1839, agent Smith (Niles Smith) purchased a military bounty certificate from Captain Barney Lowe for a choice 640 acres of ridge land that fronted on the Sabine Pass. A quarrel developed because the section of land was also a part of John McGaffey's league, the survey of which had been authorized at Nacogdoches in 1835. Eventually, the Texas General Land Office ruled that Smith?s certificate was a forgery, one of many that were circulating in East Texas at that time. Smith and McGaffey resolved their dispute, became partners in the second townsite of Sabine Pass in 1845, and in-laws when two of their children married.48

Since the relationship is not indicated, and she is too young to be a mother to the two children listed in the census, (Rachel J age 6 Ohio, and Neal M, 3 months old TX)makes me believe she is a young sister.
Also Charles, 28, born in Ohio, gave his parents' birthplace as New York, so assuming Charles is a brother to I.R.

John McCall married Martha Garner Jan 1869 months before this census; so curious she is not counted here. Mary, age 6, and Alzina Hayes, 12, living in his household, are children of Martha's uncle James Hayes, Jr. (her mother's brother). Their mother, Emily Burrell Hayes, died previous to this census and relatives took in the young children. Another Hayes child, Nancy, 8 yrs old, was taken in by Jamss McCall.
Jacob Garner took in Matilda, 10 yrs old (my ancestor).
Marie Johnson, living with John McCall, is James Hayes, Jr.'s mother. After J.H. Sr. died, she married Francis Gallier, Jr - who had also passed by this time.

    Died:
For a long time, I believed that Garner died of pneumonia due to much exposure to the winds and rain (from intense hurricane on Oct 12, 1886) but Bill Quick has determined that Garner lived on for about four months months after the storm, and that his actual death date was February 27, 1887.
