Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  U.B. Holst was born on 12 Nov 1916 in Jasper Co, Texas (son of E.T. Holst, son of C.E. Holst, son of Charles G. Holst and Mary Elizabeth Johnson); died in Jul 1983 in Vidor, Orange Co, Texas.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Research Notes: Jasper Co, Texas; relation?
    • Residence: 1938, Vidor, Orange Co, Texas
    • Residence: 1943, Beaumont, Jefferson Co, Texas
    • Residence: 1949, 2269 Valentine, Beaumont, Jefferson Co, Texas
    • Residence: 1983, Vidor, Orange Co, Texas; at death
    • Residence: Between 1996 and 2002, 945 Bowie St, Vidor, Orange Co, Texas

    Notes:

    Research Notes:
There seems to be no record - at least that I can find - of who his parents are. The only clue is that he was born in Jasper and he was born in 1916.

There were three brothers who went to Jasper County, married three Johnson girls, presumably sisters. He could be the son of any of the three, under certain circumstances.

Charles: Charles had a family well estabished by 1910; but they certainly could have had more children. They are not found in 1920 census. Mary Elizabeth would have been 37 by the 1916 to have bore U.B. - so they're definitely not ruled out as a couple to be his parents. Charles was C.G. in the 1880 census in his father's household, but enough records make it safe enough he is Charles G.

Theodore was a widower in 1910 with two small boys. But U.B. wasn't born till 6 years later, so Theodore could have definitely remarried and be his is father. Again, no 1920 census records on him that I could find. In 1880 census in his father's household he only gave his intials E.T. Holst. So, assuming E.T. is Theodore.

There is a marriage record for E.C. to Eady Johnson 1893, but by 1899, she has remarried White. Why? Did E.C. die? If not, then he, too, could easily have remarried and had family by 1916. And still, again, no 1920 census records for him either. In the 1880 census in his father's household he is listed as C.E. So, assuming it's the same Holst.

And though not conclusionary in any way -- this family loved initials for names! So, that seems to be a little added tendency that U.B. would fit in.

So, I suppose the only thing to do is attach him to all three sons and hope something will clear this up eventually.

    • Census: 02 May 1910, Jasper Co, Texas

    Notes:

    Research Notes:
Looks like three brothers, C.E., C.G. and E.T. (as named in census record) had settled in Jasper and married three Johnson sisters.

Penny Johnson m Theadore Holst. Penny died before 1910, and Theodore is living with her mother and their two sons. They are living next door to So, theorizing that is E.T.

Eady A. Johnson m E.C. Holst in 1893; however by 1899 she married T.W. White. Wether E.C. died or divorced - unk. Theorizing this is C.E. Holst.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson m C.G. Holst. His name is given as Charles G. in 1910 Census. So, no theorizing on him.

    Notes:

"Not everyone in the Beaumont area was sympathetic to
Confederate cause, James Gilbert Taylor and his wife Elvira
Chase, was a New York Mariner who bought land on Taylor's Bayou and became captain of the schooner Glide, freighting molasses and hides from beaumont to Galveston. He knew all the twists and turns of local waterways.

When the Civil War began, torn by conflict of loyalties, he
nevertheless became the pilot for a Union blockage boat seeking to strangle the movement of ships from southern ports like Sabine Pass. Locals saw Taylor as a traitor, and $10,000 Confederate bounty was offered for his arrest. His son, Walter, joined the Confederacy in Spaight's Battalion.

Taylor piloted the Clifton into Sabine Pass on Sept 8, 1863, only to meet the deadly artillery fire of Dick Dowling's Davis Guards. Its tiller rope severed, the Clifton ran aground and was captured. A fellow defector, Clay Smith of Orange, pilot of the Sachem, suffered a similar fate. Taylor is thought to have escaped to the Union gunboat Arizona, which picked up a few survivors and then fled to open sea. Taylor died under unknown
circumstances in 1864. A number of his descendants live in
Beaumont and the Taylor's Bayou area."
