In the Salem witchcraft hysteria Sarah Good's four year old daughter Dorcas Good was accused and arrested and imprisoned. The mother was hanged on July 29, and Dorcas remained imprisoned until 10 Dec 1992 when she was released on bail. It was Samuel Ray who posted a £50 recognizance bond.

member of the First Church of Salem in 1661 and was admitted freeman in 1665. In 1689, he and his wife, to whom he married 26 February 1651, were original members of the Salem Village Church. Sarah (Waters) Ray died 19 May 1700, age 70, and Joshua Ray died in 1710. He was the son of Daniel and Bethia Ray who came to Plymouth in 1630 and settled in Salem in 1634.

During the summer of 1675, the Indians of New England, united with Chief Philip of Rhode Island in attacking the English settlements. In an effort to curtail the attacks, several companies of soldiers and several thousand men were "pressed" into service to search out and destroy the Indian camps and villages. On 17 January 1675/1676, Joshua Ray made a petition to the General Court stating that his son had been in Newbury on business with Thomas Haynes, and both had been impressed into service. The intention of the petition was that his son be discharged from service because Joshua had only this one son to help carry on the affairs of three families that were under his care. It seems Joshua's son-in-law, Samuel Stevens, and brother-in-law, Captain Lathrop, had been killed on an expedition to Deerfield the previous September, and the care of their families has been taken over by him. Joshua Ray also stated in his petition that Thomas Haynes was equally burdened with concerns of his brother who then lay wounded at Rhode Island and also a neighbor and friend who lay in the garrison at Hadley. Joshua also brought to the attention of the court that Thomas Haynes, being a maltster, had a great quantity of malt under hand which would spoil if he were forced to leave. The request for their release from service was granted the next day.

1678 Oath of Allegiance (Salem) as was required of all male inhabitants over 16 years of age.

1693: keeper of the ship-tavern at Salem.

Why it is a strange thing.

No it is no strange that God will not suffer a wizard to pray to him. There is also the jury of inquest for murder that will bear hard against you. Therefore confess. Have you never wisht harm to your Neighbours?

The Deposition of Sarah Stephens aged [] & Margery Pasque aged [] testify that the 21 June Last past being improved in the holding of Jemima Rea sodainly seized with strange fitts, they heard the said Jemima in her fitts cry out much upony Nurse, Goody Cloyce & Goody Black , & said, What you cannot do it alone, & you brought this woman [to] help you: Why did you bring her? She was never complained of. Goody Cloyce (as these Deponents suppose) answered that the Devil would not suffer her any longer to be a Witch, she must be brought out: And the said Jemima complained that Goody Cloyce Pricks & Pinches her, and the said Jemima (as they understood by her discourse) was told by the said Cloyce that one Lords day when she run out of the meeting house from the Sacrament in a great rage, had her Master met her at the garrison gate just before the Fore-doer of the meeting house, to which Master she made a Courtesy, & at that time set her hand to his book & when she took her leave of him she made another Courtesy And farther these Deponents say that the said Jemima spake to this purpose in six or seven fits one after another, & that the said Cloyce had done, & bid these two deponents hold her hands that she might not so do; & also the said Jemima when recovered of her fits confirmed what she had spoken in her fits to these Deponents & further saith not.

Birth records are not available, however the minister's tax records in Salem record Joshua and a Samuel in adjacent entries for a period of years indicating it is likely they were father and son. In 'New England Families' it is said, "There is no reasonable doubt that Samuel was son of Joshua."
