From Sarah Browder: In 1957 Bible in possession of Keith Compton, Clayton, NC, will 1770 St. Mary's Co, MD, another family Bible in poss. of Jane Harrison Clagett; deeded land by father in 1737; on 25 May 1754 Matthew Compton, planter and wife, Rachel, conveyed to MatthewMartain (all of Charles Co) for 7123 pounds of tobacco a portion of tract known as "Gisborough", land passed down to Comptons by Margaret Dent, daughter of Thomas Dent of St. Mary's Co, who married Edmund Howard 26 may 1681, then of Somerset but later of Charles Co; they being grandparents of Rachel Howard Compton, the land lying in Charles Co being 156 acres. On same date, 25 May 1754, Matthew Compton and wife Rachel, for 1898 pounds of tobacco the amount of 50 acres from "Gillsborough", "Gisborough" being 164 acres. (Vol. 2, #1191)
He received certain land grants 1733 in Charles Co, Maryland.
    ________
1733, Dec 15: will of William Stevens Howard, planter, Charles County, gave to daughter Rachel, wife of Mathew Compton, personalty. [This does seem be referring to Matthew Compton Jr, since in the will of Matthew Compton, 1770, St Mary's Co, he names, among others, his wife Rachel. He left to Barton, Alex. and Edmund H, dwelling plantation of "Wornout", son Stephen a portion of that property, estate divided equally between Matthew, John, Susannah, Barton, Alex., and Edmund H. Witnesses were Robert Slye Wood and Henry Morris and Samuel Briscoe.

Charles County Court Records, August 1741 Court, Liber T#2, Page 243.
Pursuant to the order of last Aug CC Court, Commission issued on Aug 16, 1740 to Saml Hanson Jr, William Eilbeck, Wm McFerson Sr, Richard Gambra of CC, Gent (not being any way related to the petitioner, contiguous proprietor, nor interested in sd land), to examine witnesses touching the bounds of a tract of land in CC called Guisborough in possession of Matthew Compton Jr.
And now here, Richard Gambra and William McFerson, return to this Court the Commission with the following certificate & the subsequent deposition -
We hereby certify that on Mar 30, 1741, we met on the premises within mentioned, and took 1 deposition relating to the bounds of the within land. Signed - Richard Gambra, Will'm McFerson.

Will dated February 1770, refers to his land called "Worncoat," which he specifically leaves to wife Rachel during her widowhood, leaving his entire estate to her "unless she marry." He provides that the land shall fall to son Stephen if he has heirs; if not, to Matthew if he has heirs; if not, to John, if he has heirs; or to Barton,, or to Alexander, or to Edmund Howard, whichever has heirs. The will shows that of his six children three are under age and neighter of the other three had children at the time of the making of the will. Matthew Compton signed his will in his own hand before witnesses: Robert Slye Wood, Henry Moris, and Saml. Briscoe. The probate was made in St. Mary's Co on the 3rd day of Sep 1770 in the presence of Rachel Compton, the widow, and the three witnesses. No son Zachariah was named in the will.

He signed a will in Feb 1770-12 Sep 1770 in St. Mary's Co., Maryland, USA. Mathew Compton wife Rachel "Worncout" residence, sons Barton, Alexander, Edmund Howard, Stephen, Mathew & John, Mathew Compton St.to Six Children Barton Alexander Compton, Edmund Howard Compton, Stephen, Mathew, John, Susannah Compton.
Tract Worncoat. Wit Robert Slye Wood, Henry Morris, Samuel Briscoe. Widow Abides by Will.
Matthew Compton's will dated Sep 23, 1770, leaves his whole estate to his wife Rachel Compton, "unless she marry." If this should be the case, then instructions were left for the estate to be divided as follows: Children, Sons: Barton, Alexander, Edmund Howard Compton, to son Stephen, if he die without heir the to John then to Barton, Alexander, Edmund Howard

Mathew* married Rachel* Howard on 31 Dec 1731 in Trinity Parish, Charles Co, Maryland. Rachel* (daughter of William* Stevens Howard and (dau?) Elizabeth* Douglass(?), (dau?)) was born in 1714 in Calvert Co, Maryland; died on 25 Dec 1789 in Charles Co, Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Rachel* Howard was born in 1714 in Calvert Co, Maryland (daughter of William* Stevens Howard and (dau?) Elizabeth* Douglass(?), (dau?)); died on 25 Dec 1789 in Charles Co, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Other-Begin: 15 Dec 1733, Charles Co, Maryland; father's will

    Notes:

William Stevens Howard's will 1733: To daughter Rachel wife of Mathew COMPTON personalty. Residue of estate after wife's thirds are deducted, to four young children: viz. William, Elizabeth, Susannah, & Sarah. Test. Benjamin DOUGLASS, Sr. Philip JENKINS, Benjamin DOUGLAS Jr. [L21f55].

The mother of Rachel Howard needs more investigation. William Stevens' brother Thomas was married to an Elizabeth Douglass. William Stevens' first wife was apparently Elizabeth Douglass. The Elizabeth who was married to Thomas was a widow d was married to Thomas in 1714, so she apparently is not one and the same with the Elizabeth Douglass who was the first wife of William Stevens Howard. Sarah Briscoe's first husband died in 1717, but it's possible they had divorced rather than she being widowed. In William Stevens will he left legacy to 4 young children and Rachel, wife of Mathew Compton. Since Rachel was already married and he had 4 young children, assumption is that Rachel was the child of his first wife.

1713, May 29. Charles County. Named as a son of John Compton (Campton). John Compton's will was proved Mar 5, 1718. Mathew received one third of his father's real, and one third of his father's personal estate, whereas John's eldest son John received two thirds of the real and personal estate. The real estate lay in both Charles and St. Mary's Counties. No other children were mentioned.

1721, Nov 20: Matthew Compton was one of the appraisers of the estate of Joseph Peters of St Mary's County.

1722, Mar 9: Matthew Compton of St Mary's County, planter, divided up with Wm Compton of Chas Co, planter, 2 tracts of land, named Boswell and Booden, with Matthew getting two thirds, and William getting one third. This division was being done to comply with the will of John Compton Sr, deceased, of Charles County. [Suggests that Matthew was now the heir of his uncle John, and that William was closely related. According to Ref: Maryland Deponents, 1634-1799, William was born 1660, making him the same generation as Matthew Sr - possibly a brother]. Ref: Charles County Deed Book L2, p. 78. Also received 140 acres, "Rangle."

1725: one of the appraisers of the estate of Thomas Morris, St Mary's County.

1737 Mar 20, son sold Matthew Jr. 90 acres called "Boden" and "Boswell" for 1000 pounds tobacco, included dwelling buildings, barns, stables, garden and orchards.

This will was witnessed by George Briscoe and William Howard. The will was proved Sep 15, 1747.
(Note: Susannah had a bro George who was already deceased at this time. The wit George Briscoe probably a nephew of Susannah, being a son of one of her brothers: John Sr, Philip, Edward, George, or James Briscoe.

William* married (dau?) Elizabeth* Douglass(?), (dau?) before 1709. Elizabeth* (daughter of John* Douglass and Catherine* Heard) was born before 1677; died about 1717. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  (dau?) Elizabeth* Douglass(?), (dau?) was born before 1677 (daughter of John* Douglass and Catherine* Heard); died about 1717.

    Notes:

RESEARCH NEEDED! At first I had her as d/o John Douglass & Bonner; however dates fit better with John & Heard. Also, the will of the elder Douglass did not mention her, on the mentioned four boys.
Also, her estimated b.d. is given as 1673, and in some places 1685. Not sure what the books have.

Further investigation needed to determine if she was in fact the mother of Rachel Howard.

Unsubstantiated that her father was John Douglass who died 1677/78. If correct, then she had to be older than William Stevens Howard; but ages are reasonable.

Note:Surname is not Douglass unless from another family than Col. John Douglass who's daughter Elizabeth married his brother Thomas Howard.

    Maud.

1712 Mentioned: 1712, Charles Co., Maryland, USA. Edmund Howard Will

    Notes:

William married Elizabeth DOUGLAS , about 1709.
Another name for Elizabeth was Elizabeth HARBERT

    Children:
    1. Margaret Howard was born before 1709 in Charles Co, Maryland; died before 1733.
    2. Edmund Howard was born before 1712 in Charles Co, Maryland; died after 1745.
    3. 3. Rachel* Howard was born in 1714 in Calvert Co, Maryland; died on 25 Dec 1789 in Charles Co, Maryland.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John* C Compton, Sr. (immigrant) was born in 1629 in England (son of John* Compton, (immigrant) and Susannah* "Ann" Freeman, (immigrant)); died on 18 Jan 1718 in Charles Co, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Emigration: 1664, England
    • Immigration: 1664, Maryland

    Notes:

John C. Compton and his son Mathew Compton both used the Compton family of Northampton, England's seal on documents. The family is in the Earle of Northampton and is listed in Burke's Peerage.

    (from Sarah Browder 12/15/03)
JOHN COMPTON (1-1) the first of this family to reach American soil as far as is known, came to Maryland from England about 1662. CAVALIERS and PIONEERS by Nugent Vol I p 147 shows a John Compton transported to Mockjack Bay area of Va near the Severn River by Thomas Williams in Aug 31, 1643. The question that will probably remain unsolved is whether this is our John Compton or not.

(According to Skordas' "Early Settlers of Maryland" John Compton was in Charles Co prior to 1664 L. 7 f 490 ).Some will argue that if a person was transported by someone else then how could he have obtained land so quickly. His first piece of land was Brathwood, in Charles Co, an estate of 800 acres surveyed for him was patented 12 June 1665. Also a patent of 200 acres called Boswell was also issued the same year. So it seems John was not destitute when he arrived to have acquired over 1000 acres of land. In 1675 he married Mary Clarke, widow of Robert Douglas and daughter of John Clarke( will dated 12 Aug 1698- 6.177) and probably granddaughter of Robert Clarke (will dated 21 July 1664-1.208)

It appears John Compton was born in England circa 1629 and died by 18 Jan 1717/18 Charles Co, Md when will was probated.

John Compton -900 acres called Boswell in St Mary's Co (Land Office Patents 7 p 499 and 502 dated 24 Jan 1664) and Edward Swann 200 acres called Chestnutt Point in Charles Co and 1200 acres in St Mary's Co called Eagleton -same book and page. Edward Swan transported persons in 1662, 1663, and 1664. John Compton was witness and also stated he was due land by custom of colony for
transporting himself into Charles Co( Land Office Patents Bk 8 p 460-464. What with closeness of John and Edward Swan it is only natural that their families would intermarry, considering the scarcity of those entering the colony at that time. More on the Swann/Swan family in that chapter.

John Compton's will was made 29 May 1713 and was probated Charles Co 5 March 1718(Charles Co. Accts: L 2. f 447). Heirs given as "eldest son John-2/3 of land lying both in Charles and St. Mary's counties and 2/3 of estate, both
household and goods chattles and horses"; "son Mathew 1/3 of patented land in both Charles and St. Mary's", after their deaths it shall pass to nearest of Compton kin of either son. Both sons were appointed executors. Test: Phillip Briscoe, Sr, John Fairfax, Susanna Briscoe Liber 15 folio 8 (No mention of wife or other children.)

1664, Dec 21: Claimed rights at his lordship's land office for 50 acres of land for own personal adventure into Maryland. At same time he showed importation of a Richard Louder, acquiring 50 acres, and another 100 acres assigned to him for bringing in Thomas Thorowgood and wife Frances. Thus he came in on his own and unmarried. Therefore he was immigrant ancestor.

    from Sarah Browder:

5 Mar 1718. William Compton who signed inv. of John Compton Sr as next of kin, must have been a son & heir of John Jr.

    Notes:

"Anne Arundel Gentry" states: "The three outstanding aristocratic Howard families of Maryland and their English background have presented a study for the family historian for the present as well as the past generations. Edmund Howard, of Charles County, Cornelius Howard of Baltimore County and Mathew Howard of Anne Arundel County all in some manner can claim descent from the family ranking next to the Royal House of England, but how they fit in is a puzzle yet to be solved -- all three were conscious of their armorial rights and used the trappings in Maryland after they emigrated from their native England."

Edmund HOWARD Esq. Gent; maybe son of William & Elliner Howard (Inventories & Accounts Charles County Maryland Vol. 1798-1802, 24 Dec 1799 p. 255, 227-28) James Carricoe, n.d, Mr. Grover C. Wentworth, 106 Laclede Ave., Rockford, IL 61102 states that Edmund HOWARD is the son of William & Elliner HOWARD, no sources were given. Also theory that he is the son of Mathew Howard, son of Thomas Howard.

CC, Mar 30, 1741. The deposition of Terrence Bryan, age about 64, who declares that about 20 years ago, Mr Edmd Howard Sr showed a tree fallen down and rotten, on a stony knoll on the south side of a branch, and put his cane thereon and told him it was a gum and was the beginning tree of his land and that he intended to put a locust post in the place thereof, which knoll is now shown by this deponent. Also, this deponent further says that he lived upon the plantation and land about 7 years.

    Research Notes:
Be advised that parental relationship is nothing more than semi-educated guessing. Researchers have been trying to draw conclusions of Edmund's parents and his relationship to William Stevens forever. This is only an exercise in exploring possibilities with both known facts and then conjecture in an attempt to at least get the pieces out on the table.

    Facts we know:
    1. Edmund Howard named his first son after William Stevens.

    2. 1678 William Stevens willed 400 acres to Edmund Howard and to his son William Stevens Howard.
(William Stevens had no issue of his own)
(comment: Conflict of dates here because William Stevens Howard was born 3 Nov 1684 - 6 years after the date suggested when the will would have been written.
(it appears some records transposed the date 1687 to 1678. If so, then William Stevens Howard was 3 yrs old ~ss)

    3. 3 Oct 1685: John White, in his will, probated 3 Oct 1685, calls William Stevens Howard "my cousin." The relationship is unexplained beyond the reference. (William Stevens Howard would be 11 mos old!)

    4. 1691: There was a Benjamin Keizer (or Keyser) of Somerset County (who died in 1691), who in his will names "my father George Keizer," brothers Elizer and John Keizer, sister May Mould and "my cousins [Nieces and Nephews?] Tabitha White, Priscilla White, Sarah White, Stevens White and William White". He also left small legacies to Lawrence Crawford (bro-in-law) and George Layfield (bro-in-law), and refers to land which Col. William Stevens, of "Rehoboth", in his will, also devised property to Edmund Howard and his son William Stevens Howard, not mentioning any relationship. John White m Sarah Keyser.

comment: I really question b.d. of WSH because of these facts. Why would John White refer to a baby cousin in his will??? Why would Benjamin Keizer leave property to a father and a son who would be only 7 years old?

But taking the "known" information and allowing for typos or something to explain date discrepancies, to get the relationships to all fit as described, and a little guesswork on those that aren't documented, about the only way this would work are are two options:
    1. I think Edmund might have had a 1st wife before Dent, and that first wife would have been a Keyser daughter. But dates don't exactly add up for that to be logical.
    2. Edmund's mother was a sister to George Keyser and aunt to the Keyser children, and their spouses. That would give John White a 1st cousin, once removed relationship.

Well, it ain't all worked out -- and it's doubtful it ever will be. But at least this does have the Keyser and White families somewhat recorded, along with their relationship to William Stevens -- and conjectured relationship to Edmund. As I said, at least some puzzle pieces are laid out for more scrutiny.

probable relation of John White to Edmund & son Wm Stevens Howard (~ss):
Edmund Howard's mother believed to be sister to George Keyser Jr. so...
