    ========================

Corder Stone, believed to be the son of John Stone and his first wife, is believed to have been born in about 1769, probably in Granville County, North Carolina, where the
family was residing prior to moving to Surry County, North Carolina in 1770. Corder Stone and his younger brother, Thomas Stone, witnessed a deed in Surry County, North Carolina on 21 April 1792, between their uncle, Daniel Barrow, and Mr. Edward Lovell. 244 Sometime after this, Corder and his brother, Thomas, left North Carolina, and after spending a short period of time in Tennessee, moved further north into Kentucky. Corder was later married on 18 August 1800 to a widowed woman named Mary "Polly" Mason in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
Several years after their marriage, Corder and Mary moved south into Tennessee, where they settled in that portion of the state that was later formed into White County in 1806. Corder and his brother, Thomas Stone, were later found on the 1812 list of taxable property in White County.
Corder, who was a farmer and Minister by trade, is believed to have died in White County, Tennessee sometime during the period 1843-1845.

    Notes:

Thomas Stone. We know that John and William were brothers, and we think they may have had a brother, Thomas. However, we have not been able to ascertain the identify of their parents. We use Thomas Stone here as a place-holder.

John Stone, possibly son of Thomas Stone, born in Fauquier County, Virginia, abt. 1725; married --- Corder, born about 1730, presumed to have been a daughter of John Corder. John Stone and his brother William are said to have been among the first settlers in Surry County, North Carolina, possibly in or before 1765.

That John Stone, father of Enoch, married a Corder is a matter of conjecture, apparently based on the fact that he named his third son Corder. Additionally, it is said (but not verified) that John's first son, Enoch, had a son named Thomas Corder. Record of the marriage has not been found, however.

John and his brother, William, are said to have come into Surry (then Rowan) County, North Carolina, from Fauquier County, Virginia. Of this, there seems to be fairly good evidence. A John Stone, a William Stone, and a Thomas Stone had established themselves in Fauquier's Elk Run district by 1748. Butlers, Conways, and Corders also resided in that district. William married Hannah Conway and had, among others, Ezekiel Stone (born 1756) and Conway Stone (born 1761). Among soldiers in the War of the Revolution, we find Ezekiel Stone, who volunteered from Surry County, and Conway Stone, who volunteered from Granville County, North Carolina. Additionally, Conway Stone is named in the will William Stone made in Surry County on 23 March 1819. That William and Thomas were brothers is supported by property records of Fauquier County (see below), but no such evidence has been found in Fauquier to support a brotherly relationship between William and John. For this we rely on the account written by Jane Elizabeth (King) Stone in 1906.

John Stone and brother William were probably Baptists. Says the author of Stones of Surry:

When Baptist Ministers began to visit and preach in Virginia, they gained many ardent supporters and from 1760 through 1780 there was a large organization of Baptists traveling through Virginia; a goodly representation went to Southern Virginia and Western North Carolina. The Stone family caught the fever and named children for the prophets of old: Ezekial, Enoch, Ephraim, etc.
John may have been a preacher. There was in 1786 a John Stone among the Baptist Ministers of the eleven churches in the Yadkin Association. However, we have found no evidence to corroborate that John, father of Enoch, and John, the Baptist Minister, were the same man. Surviving records suggest that there was more than one John Stone in the area [i.e., in the Yadkin district] during the second half of the eighteenth century.

I have just stumbled over the name "Mary Corder" b. ca. 1730-1742, supposed wife of a John Stone b. ca. 1734 in Prince William County, VA. John's parents (brother and wife) are generally noted online to be Thomas Stone of PW Co., VA and Mary Butler of Fauquier Co., VA.

There is a reasonably in-depth profile of this family at http://www.familyhistorypages.com/Stone.htm and the author is very clear that this name "Mary Corder" is unproven, and based on the fact that an unproven child of John Stone was called "Corder Stone". Curiously, they also named another unproven son "Tazewell Stone".

I am curious, though, about this "Mary". Some sources say she was from Surry Co., NC, but it actually appears that the Stone family moved there in the 1760's or '70's. What little supposition I've been able to find online regarding "Mary's" parents leans towards the Fauquier County Corders (who have proven Stone intermarriages).

I quote from the above referenced URL: "That John Stone, father of Enoch, married a Corder is a matter of conjecture, apparently based on the fact that he named his third son Corder. Additionally, it is said (but not verified) that John's first son, Enoch, had a son named Thomas Corder. Record of the marriage has not been found, however."

Additionally, the author of the site supports this connection by continuing a couple of paragraphs later: "A John Stone, a William Stone, and a Thomas Stone had established themselves in Fauquier's Elk Run district by 1748. Butlers, Conways, and Corders also resided in that district."

However, I am wondering -- if there was a "Mary Corder" who married John Stone -- is there any possibility she could have been a daughter of Edward Corder of Greenway Court? The birth date range fits, and Edward Corder lived over the Fauquier County line in Frederick County. Edward's descendants moved to Tazewell Co., VA in the 1770's.

In looking at a map of the Elk Run area, I tend to agree with the conclusions of the extant researchers of the line -- if there was a Corder marriage, it was most likely with the southern Fauquier County Corders, and not the Frederick (ie: Edward) Corders, but I can't absolutely rule out the possibility of a connection. Can anyone help me prove or disprove this?

In Reply to: Re: "Mary Corder" and John Stone Family of southern Fauquier VA and Surry NC by Shawn Corder of 1178

I am writing a book on the Stone family from Fauquier County Virginia.

Here are a few points I can tell you from my research.

John Stone married a Corder. It was recorded in the Account Book of Sheriff John Crump from 1751. The account book has been lost in recent years but I have a record from two genealogists who both recorded the same information and page for the material. One was Henry Wright Newman who wrote The Stones of Poynton Manor and the other is Charles Stone who wrote the Stone's of Surry. I have reviewed Newman's actual notes from the book made in the 1930's and they reveled John Stone married ? Corder. (I suspect the unusual name caused a problem with the transcription. The wives of other Stone sons first and last names are give. He just had a ? Corder for her).
I have uncovered a deed by John Stone from Fauquier dated Sept. of 1775 his wife's name was Milley. She is likely your missing daughter. She was likely born in Prince William County in 1730. John and Milly and their family moved from Fauquier to Laurens SC in 1775. John died there in 1800 and Mildredge died there in abt. 1820. I have a copy of a resulting case dividing the homestead in 1822. John identified her in his will as my wife "Mildredge". All other references say Milley or Milly. I also have a copy of her Dower rights from Fauquier. She could only make her mark.

I also found a will for John Coder and one of the executors is Thomas Stone. This would be John Stone's brother Thomas Stone. Thomas had a daughter Elizabeth and she married a William Dulin. Also Thomas' son, Thomas had a daughter Parazaid (?) Stone who married Bayles Corder. She died in St. Helena Parish Louisiana.

From my research it appears that John and Mildredge married in 1748/49. Mildredge had children who carried the first names of other Corders. Reuben, William, Lewis, Elias. It appears some of her brothers moved to Laurens. I have found Reuben and Elias Corder living in Laurens near the Stones. Mildredge's children were John Jr., Reuben, William, Elias, Lewis, and Nancy.

Some of the Stones have mistakenly placed John Stone in Surry NC which was not the case. The John Stone, who was John's nephew, was married to a Mary. This likely caused the Mary Corder claims.

    Hope This Helps
