I Isaac YOAKUM do make and publish this
my last will and testament hereby
revokig and making void all other
Wills by me at any time made

First I direct that my funeral expenses
and all my debts be paid as soon after any
death as posable out of any money that
I may die possessed of or that may first
come in to the hands of my executors

Secondly I give and bequath to my son
George YOAKUM the lower part of my
plantation whare I now live beginning
at the valla Road near the gate at the Pond
thence with the fence near the Barn to a
cross fence on the north of the barn then
with the cross fence down the valla to
oposid the east fence of the peach orchord
thence with Said fence then a Strate line
a cross the rige to a northern cross fence
running with that cross to the new road

Third I bequeath to my son Marcelus
YOAKUM the land whare I now live beginning
at the valla road on the ROOT tract, and neer
the house whare John TREESE now livs and with
a row of Peach Trees until it coms oposit to
a fence that runs up and down the vally thence
eastward with Said fence to the line that was
between MOSS and ROOT before I Bought from
them then with a new fence that I made neer
the line to the new road. Then all the land
on the South Side of the road tract to the River
I wish to have equally divided between George
and Marcellis YOAKUM for the benafit
of the timber to Both their farms.

Fourth I Bequeath to my Son Thomas
YOAKUM Beginning at the valla road at a
corner near the blacksmith shop thence down the
road near near John TREESES house to the line
dissignated as Marcilliseus line thence with Marcel=
=las Said line to the MOSS line or the new fence
spoken of thence with Marcellases to the new
road thence eastwardly with said road to then
dry lot line with said line Northwardly
to the valey road thence with said road to the
Beginning then I wish the balance of MOSS
tract south of the new road to the river
divided equally between Thomas YOAKUM
and Aaron YOAKUM for the timber to both
their farms

Fifth. I bequeath next to my son Aaron
YOAKUM the land he now lives on beginning
on the valy road thence northward with the
dry lot line and with the courses of my deed
so as to incluse all the lands I have on the
North side of the valley road then I wish to
divide the sugar hollow land on Powells river
equally between Geroge and Marcellas and Thomas
and Aaron YOAKUM.

Sixth. Next I bequeath to my son John
YOAKUM one thousand dollars of which
amount he has received five hundred dollars

Seventh next I bequeath to my son Moses
YOAKUM also one thousand dollrs of which
amount he has received five hundred dollars

Eighth I next bequeath to my daughter
Betty Elizabeth VAN BEBBER also one thousand
dollars of which amount she has received
five hundred dollars all to be paid when
or as soon as that amount is made out of any
property after my death and if there should
not be property sufficient to make said fifteen
hundred dollars then in that case George
Marcellas Thomas and Aaron the four that
got the land must equally pay each there portion to
make the balance of any shall lack

Ninth. I next bequeath to my son William
YOAKUM one thousand dollars which is to be
paid out of my estate after my death and it is my wish to
have the above amount placed in the hands
of a guardian to be paid to him as he may
need it as I think he would waste it and not
make a proper use of it I therefore wish to
appoint Isaac THOMAS as his guardian signed
sealed and delivered and acknowledged in
the presence of this the 23rd day of April 1853 his

Isaac married Mary Martha Davis about 1800 in Powell, Valley, Claiborne Co, Tennessee. Mary (daughter of Aaron Davis and Mrs. Rachel (..) Davis) was born in 1779 in Powell, Valley, Claiborne Co, Tennessee; died on 24 Jul 1845 in Powell, Valley, Claiborne Co, Tennessee; was buried in Yoakum Cem, Speedwell, Claiborne Co, Tennessee. Notes:

He served in Capt. Ray's Co, Lincoln Mil., fought at the Battle of Point Pleasant, WV on 10 Oct 1774, along with Daniel Boone, Isaac Michael Van Bebber John Van Bebber and Peter Van Bebber. Isaac was killed in that battle, fought with an Indian group led by Chief Corstalk, who was also killed there. The Indian group was hired by the British. The Claiborne Co., TN Historical Quarterly states that George, along with John and Peter Van Bibber, established Yoakum's Station in then Grainger Co, which is now Claiborne Co. It is about 14 miles from the Cumberland Gap. In 1797 Fort Yoakum was built nearby.

George was killed on a bear hunt in the Cumberland Mountains
It is reported that George and his brother-in-law established Yoakum's Station in article furnished by Jack Reber. It reports George killed on a bear hunt and buried near the station. He built Yoakum's Fort about 14 miles from the Cumberland Gap. It is also reported that Yoakum's Fort was on the Wilderness Road in Lee Co., VA, about 14 miles from the Cumberland Gap before Yoakum's Station in TN. I cannot find it on the DeLorme Atlas of Virginia.
Granger Co. Court Minutes Book #1, Pages 174-75, dated 18 May 1801, ordered Martha and Isaac Yoakum to administer the estate of George Yoakum, deceased. John Vanbebber and Robert
Howard were securities.

R. A. Yoakum of Morristown, TN wrote that George married Margaret Van Bibber 1777, daughter of Isaac Michael Van Bibber. He relates the story that during the Indian attack which claimed all the rest of the family, George grabbed a "skillet handle" from one Indian and killed three Indians with it. George would have been only about 13 years old, unless one accepts Harold M. Yoakum's version. (?)

Harold M. Yoakum, in his book, page 12, reports that the massacre took place in 1773, the year he says that Valentine was killed, that George was born 1752, thus George would have been about 21 years old when he grabbed the skillet handle used to kill two Indians. Very soon thereafter, he states that George joined Captain Ray's Company of the Lincoln Militia of Illinois (??)

If Steve Smith's research is correct, and it appears trustworthy, then that story about his escape is not true. To support his theory, the Indians killed all grown men, taking only women and children prisoners. Thus any older George Yocum would not have survived. A George Yoakum was among the prisoners released by the Indians had to have been a child captive. No other George Yocum near that age has ever surfaced, thus it is strong evidence that that captive George was this George.

This George was in Lord Dunmore's war, which was just prior to the Revolutionary War and not considered part of the Revolution, thus no revolutionary pension.

The mother [Martha Yoakum] moved with her family about 1810 to Madison County near Edwardsville, Illinois. They moved next to Montgomery County, Illinois and then to Sangamon County, Illinois, arriving June 10, 1819, at the north side of Richland Creek, in what is now Salisbury Township. The mother died there.

Customers at the Greenbrier trading post of Sampson & George Matthews included: Isaac Van Bibber 6-1771 & 10-1772.
Those who paid with deerskins were Isaac Van Bibber, who killed the most deer, & Joseph & james Davis. Van Bibber selling at least 230 deerskins. Davis' sold more than 100 deerskins.
In 1774, Isaac Van Bibber, an Old Side Baptist Minister, served in the Southern Division of General Andrew Lewis, under command of Colonel Charles Lewis. Isaac was wounded in the Battle of Point Pleasant, on October 10, 1774, he died about 30 hours later, making his actual death date as October 11, 1774. He was buried beside Colonel Charles Lewis, & later moved, along with others, that were killed in the battle, to a nearby resting place.
An inventory of his possessions is found in Botetourt County, Virginia, his widoe, Sarah (Davis) Van Bibber, administrator.

Dear Sherry,
Isaac Michael Van Bibber 1725-1774 was killed in what is proclaimed one of the first battles - Battle of Point Pleasant in what was then Virginia. His son James Sr. is my line. Sometime after James Sr. they spelled it Van Bebber and that is how it is today.
Isaac was 49 when he was killed and left his family the youngest one under two I think.

Isaac married Sarah Davis on 27 Nov 1768 in Cecil Co, Maryland. Sarah was born about 1730 in North Carolina; died in 1796 in Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

After Isaac Sr.'s death, his wife and five of children, including Peter, James, and John, moved to Claiborn County, Tennessee between 1785-1796 and helped establish Fort Yoakum on the Powell River in Washington County, Tennessee, in present-day Dryden, Wise County, Tennessee. His wife remarried to William Griffey.

Russell County:

P 375 June 21 1785 Ordered to be certified to the Auditors that Sarah VanBibber now wife of Wm. Griffy made sufficient proof to this court that she was two years the widow of Isaac Van Bibber and that she had seven children during her widowhood.

Vol 1787-1789 April 1788 Page 178 ordered that it be certified that Sarah VanBibber widow of Isaac VanBibber dec'd a pensioner who was allowed by the Commissioners of the Southern District in the year 1775 raised and maintained her family at her own expense having no estate of her husband's and that she is object in need of the allowance made her.
NOTE the Year 1788, she had not left Greenbrier County at this time to move to southwest Virginia with her children.
