    The following is an exact transcription of a letter from Joshua Bruce dated 1/26/1857:

    "Wythe County January the 26th 1857
    dear Son and daughter
    I send you a few lines and in them you will learn that your mother departed this life on the 19th of the present month at 11 oclock fore noon She was buried on the 21st by the side of your old grandmother Bruce She was taken sick on the 4th of August.last we had two doctors Ward and Rice they ware not fully desided on her complaint it was thought it was a liver and stumick complaint there was five weeks of the last of her time we had to situp with her night and day She suffered more with heart sickness then any person I ever have seen though she tour it with Christain fortetude She at times would git happy and shout praises to god She often said she would not give her up hope for the holed world She said She was willing to die brother White preached here a few days before her death She got very happy and shouted a loud with a strong voice and. reched out her hand and shook hands with several persons that sit by her bed her mind at times was some what impaired but She knew everybody till near the last when she came to the bank of Jordan She went with out a groan or a strggle as one goin to sleep there is no daught in my mind but she now singing in glory I do not expect to be sepperated from her long as I am geting very feble your mothers funeral will not be preached till warm
    wether say the last of May or the first of June I would very glad if could come and see us We will let you know in proper tim as when it will be preached come if you can in the time that your mother was sick. Menurvy was taken down withe the inflametery rumetis She was confind to her bed several weeks so bad that she had to be turnd with a sheet & has now got
    so the she can go about the hous and swepe the hous and sow and nit Son we are in hopes that she will soon be able to do her work the rest of your friends here are well we here put a peas of your mothers shroud in this letter your mother has derected me to send you a silk hankerchief I will not send it now if you com you can git it if not I will send it in a letter come if you can I remain your loving father

    I, Joshua Bruce of the County of Wythe and State of Virginia do hereby make my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows: That is to day, I will and bequeath to my son Josiah Bruce all of my land in the County of Wythe it being the land I now live on, to him and his heirs forever. My will and desire is that after my death my Executors shall sell my livestock, that is horses, cattle, sheep and hogs. Also to sell all my farming tools, wagon and smith tools and my will is that my Executors sell all my household and kitchen furniture, my law books are to be sold, the rest of my books to be equally divided amongst all my children. Out
    of the money arising from the sale of my Personal Estate my Just debts are to be paid. The balance of the money to be divided amongst all my children so as to make them as nearly equal as possible. It is to be understood that Sarah B. Hards my Grand Daughter shall have what would have been coming to Anna Kerr her mother if she had lived and also Nancy (?) Baker and William Baker (infants) to have what would have been coming to their mother Lydia H. Baker if she had lived. It is to be understood that all my children, namely, James Bruce, Isaiah Bruce, John Bruce, Josiah Bruce, Anna Kerr, Susannah Waddle, William Bruce, Elizabeth C.

    our lawful attorney to act and transact all and every kind of business which may and may have to do and transact within the state and Dominion of Virginia, but more especially for carrying into effect the sale of a certain tract of land lying and being in the said County of Albemarle wherein we formerly lived on the south end of the long mountain containing 300 acres by estimation to be the same more or less and bounded by a certain bounds mentioned in a deed made by John Mullins to us and we hereby innpower and authorize the said Richard Bruce to sell convey and make a lawful title in fee simple to any person or persons as
    he shall think proper of the aforementioned tract of land and we hereby ratify and forever confirm all and every not that the said Richard Bruce, our said attorney, shall do respecting the sale of the said land, as if it had actually been done by ourselves in Person and the some shall
    forever bind us our heirs to firmly to abide and stand to any act our said attorney shall do respecting the same. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this third day of March 1794.

    less being the tract of land I formerly lived on being the same land I purchased of a certain Richard Beale and bounded at the present by the lands of Thomas Harvey, Thomas Davis (dec'd), John Haney, Nathan Mallory, Joseph White, Alexander Ogg and James Earlies and I do hereby warrant and defend the right and title to the aforesaid tract of land free from the
    claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever and do hereby make unto the said William a good end lawful right in fee simple to the same him and his heirs forever Together wlth all the appurtenances thereunto belonging To have and To hold the same for their proper use and behoofs for ever with every privilege and Emolument arising from the same.
