Notes: HISTORY: from ELLIS FAMILY HISTORY compiled by Dorman Hayes - 58045 Benham Avenue, Elkhart, IN 46517 -- dormh@michiana.org Some time about 1815 he moved the family to Jackson County, Tennessee the part that is now Putnam County and settled on Cane Creek near Cookeville. Leslie Phy Ellis (a family Historian stated in his notes that Elijah was listed in the 1790 Census. The only county with an Elijah was Johnson County. It seems he and a John Ellis left Johnson to live in Orange County, North Carolina near Joseph (known to have come from Maryland) or Nimrod (thought to have come from Maryland). It seems probable that Elijah and John could have been sons of Nimrod. Nimrod died about 1810 leaving no will. A list of his children is not available, but census records indicate he fathered at least 4 sons, one probably was the Stephen who administered his Estate. Also John a purchaser at the Estate sale. Elijah is not found in the available estate papers, but these are believed to be incomplete. The 1800 census for Orange County shows Elijah with 2 females under 10 indicating there were two daughters that we know nothing about. Edgar Ellis found in the Johnson County Marriage records that an Elijah Ellis married a Patience Collins on 20 July 1792. This might be our Elijah and would account for the 2 daughters. Elijah married Margaret J. "Peggy" Madden on 17 Jan 1798 in Orange Co, North Carolina. Margaret (daughter of Andrew (NC) Madden (Maiden?), (son of who?)) was born on 11 Mar 1778 in Orange Co, North Carolina; died on 4 Dec 1865 in Putnam Co, Tennessee; was buried in Stewart Cem, Cookeville, Putnam Co, Tennessee.
