    Bevilacqua Store:
as a child I remember going to the grocery store with my grandparents or with my mom when she would take my grandmother to the store. The store was Bevilacqua's, and at that time it was being run by the kids - particularly Camille, who was the daughter my grandmother was closer friends with, and her brother Charlie. But other kids also worked in store including Concetta and Spike. Concetta went to Beaumont High School and was in my dad's class. The store was located on the corner of Washington Blvd and Ave C, and they lived in the house behind the store. They always gave me a soda or candy and were very nice. The building and house are still there (2011) and the store is now tax preparation place.

The parents were Vincent and Concetta Bevilacqua, and were at 2490 (illeg in census but between 2450 and 2510 Park) in the 1930 census. They were immigrants from Italy in 1897, having lived in the United States for 29 years. The census shows him 56 (1874) years old and she 53 (1877) He states married at age 26 and she at age 23, calculating to 1900, but best guess is they married in Italy, before 1897.

    Kautland and Eberhardt neighbors:
living next door to my grandparents were the Katulands. The Kautlands were there forever and even after my grandmother died in 1977. Their daughter Hilda Mae married Carroll Dean - he went by "Dean" - Eberhardt, and my mother was friends with her. She had a child Dennis Dean Eberhardt, who was born just before I was - he on 1 Jul 1946 and me the following Sep. 1946. Hilda made a very pretty little blue dress for me when I was still an infant, and mother had my portrait made wearing that little blue dress. I can remember playing with Dennis sometimes when I would go over to my grandparents' house. But we lost touch with them over the years.
Hilda died 7 Jan 1991. Public records show Dean remarried to Helen Carey in 1996. They were both 75.

Whether the Corrigans kept possession of teh cabin is unknown, but we do know that Hurricane Ike in 2007 swept the whole Bolivar peninsula pretty much clean, including what had been my grandparents' cabin.

and "How long is Andrew going to stay with you? Pa lets the boys go and stay other places but will not let them come to see me but maybe they do not want to come live with us. We are going where they have fine schools. Mr. Norton wants me to try again to get Andrew to come live with us. I know we can do more for him than Pa will ever be able to do he has let Sister and George have a brother, and now when I ask him for one he will not let me have one. I guess he thinks I do not deserve one. I wonder if he remembers who took care of his four little motherless boys for him. I wish you would ask Pa to let me have Andrew."

    Note:
1The Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 killed 21 million people world-wide--more than died in World War I. It is a fascinating study of a modern Black Plague, and I am including an excerpt from the Port Arthur News dated 13 June, 1976:

"How it travelled such great distances in that autumn still baffles science. Remote Eskimo villages were discovered completely wiped out by the disease while doctors in China cried it rolled over that country like a tidal wave.
"In Boston, trading on the stock exchange went to half-days; theatres were closed; athletic contests cancelled--even a churchless Sunday was declared Sept. 22, 1918, to keep people and the disease off the streets.
"At the same time, Chicago's newly formed influenza commission called for the arrest of open-faced sneezers. But still doctors reports sadly tell of hundreds showing up at over-crowded, understaffed hospitals with coloring "blue as huckleberr." Few lived through the night.
"Continuing onto the West Coast, Seattle policemen were required to wear masks, but the sickness prevailed.
"Here in Texas, one-half of the city of San Antonio came down with the flu.
"Assuredly, each early Port Arthurian in 1918 lost at least an acquaintance, if not a friend.
"Roy McCollum, then 27-years-old, recalls being the only one in his family stricken. He said he remembers being in bed, ("The only place I felt like being,") and watching an undertaker walk past his window.
"'I remember thinking how much business this flu had brought him and the next day I heard he came down with it and died that night,' McCollum stated."

Had a train accident and hurt his leg - it was operated on and caused it to be shorter, so he had to wear a platform shoe to equal the lengh of the leg.
He almost died when this happened. Grandma was married (alive) when this happened. Story is told that he was so afraid they would amputate his leg, he refused anasethetic.

had a dream of the fork in the road and someone was in room with him. He took one, and the patient who was sharing room died.

Funeral Set for S. H. Courts, 92, Oldest Native Here

Samuel Helmer Courts, at 92 the oldest native inhabitant of Port Arthur, died unexpectedly Monday at 3 p.m. in the home of a son, C. C. Courts, 1825 Seventh street.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Grammier-Oberle Funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.1

    Born Here 1862

Mr. Courts was born on March 15, 1862--about the time of the Battle of Sabine Pass2--when Port Arthur was a small community called Aurora.
His mother was the daughter of Julia Ann Sparks3, whose parents, John and Melinda Sparks, established the first community here in the early 1850s. Then, the community was known as Sparks. Sparks--or Aurora, as it was soon to be called--consed mainly of homesteads erected in the vicinity of the present DeQueen Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive, with the farms facing Lake Sabine.

    Courts Home Added

When Julia Ann Sparks was married to Jim Courts, an Englishman4, about 1860, another home was added to the settlement. It was in this home that Samuel Courts was born.
When he was 21 years old, Sam Courts began operating pony-back mail service between Sabine and Beaumont, a job he held for 11 years. Disease and the infirmaties of age began to take their normal toll among the residents of Aurora, most of whoere the children and grandchildren of John and Melinda Sparks. The settlers began to drift off as the hardships of the War Between the States came to them.
In 1894, when he was 32, Sam Courts moved to Beaumont, where he married Miss Claudia Gantz and became a building contractor. He remained in Beaumont until retirement about 28 years ago. His wife died in Beaumont in 1927.5

    Built Beaumont Homes

Mr. Courts built many of the old homes on Calder Avenue in Beaumont and also assisted in construction of the Woolworth Building there.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Wiley Choate and Mrs. Earl D. Mudd, both of Groves; Mrs. Joe N. Runnels of Port Arthur, Mrs. O. K. Jones and Mrs. J.J. Douglas, both of Beaumont; two sons, H. O. Courts of Beaumont and C. C. Courts of t Arthur; 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Courts, a member of the Methodist church, took an active part in the Centennial celebration here in 1948, although in the background, for he shunned publicity.
Mr. Courts was perhaps the best authority of the early history of Lower Jefferson county.
The Rev. Edmund Lacy, a ministerial student at the Southwestern Baptist seminary, at Fort Worth, will officiate at the rites Wednesday.

    Notes:

    1. There is no headstone for Samuel Helmer Courts.
    2. The Battle of Sabine Pass was fought 24 September 1862.
    3. Errata: His mother was Julia Ann Sparks.
    4. Errata: This branch of Courts all believed James "Jim" Courts was the Englishman and have no recollection of a Thomas Court. Daughters Daisy Courts Douglas and Beatrice Courts Choate both stated Jim was an Englishman. Historical records and contemoprary accounts discount this idea.
    5. Errata: Claudie Gentz Courts died Sunday, 5 November 1916, around 5:00 p.m.

    Buried:
Helmer was buried beside his son-in-law Frank Lowe. Frank had been married to Helmer's daughter, Gladys. When Frank was buried in 1949, apparently Gladys bought a double headstone. But she remarried, and by the time Helmer died in 1954, she chose to give her burial spot beside Frank to her father. Unfortunately, the headstone was never engraved for Helmer.

    Notes:

By 1880, Charles and Matilda were living next door to Anna McCall, who was by then a widow and her youngest child was Claudie McCall. That caught my eye because my grandmother, Lillian Courts Jones' mother was Claudie Gentz. On further scrutiny, I see that Claudie McCall was born 1872, and I also saw that her father died that same year - that's sad. In the meantime, in 1872 when she was born and had lost her father, my Matilda and Charles' youngest child at that time was Lena, 2 yrs old. They had another girl in '74, and then in '76 is when my Claudie Gentz, my g-grandma, was born. I'm thoroughly convinced that my Claudie Gentz was named after little Claudie McCall, now 4 yrs old!! I was really excited to find where my grandmother's name came from. Some records have her as "Claude" which I knew she went by Claudie. But anyway -- that's where her name came from!
I also found Anna McCall in 1900. By then she declared 7 births and 5 living. All 5 are still home. Missing is little Claudie McCall. Since we have no 1890 census, we don't know when she died - unless there's some other record I'm not aware . But now I wonder if perhaps the child died around the time that my Claudie was born to further enhance the honor of having a baby named for her.

Claudie died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage in 1916- leaving 8 children. My grandmother, Lillian Courts, was only 12, but she talked often to me about how pretty her mama was, dark curly hair and tall. My g-mother was 4'10! so "tall" is relative) and Helmer Courts, Claudie's widower, never remarried to raise all those kids.

    Mrs. S. H. Courts, Dead

Mrs. S. H. Courts, 39 years old, died about 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home, 2060 Cable Street. She had been sick for several weeks.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. Frank Clark. Internment followed at Smith cemetery, near McFadden station, south of the city. Broussard, Little & Co. had charge of the burial. The pallbers were Jeff Pyron, Will Barrow, John Webb, Victor Holtz, Harry Richardson and F. L. Wallace.
Mrs. Courts is survived by her husband, two sons, Hal and Clyde Courts, and five daughters, Mrs. Wallace Choates and Misses Gladys, Beatrice, Lillian and Daisy Courts.

    Notes:
This obituary, typical for Beaumont newspapers, is frought with errors. I have taken one liberty with the article; it is not a direct quote. The obituary is actually written for "Mrs. F. H. Courks"; I have corrected the name. Also note the article mentions Mrs. Wallace Choates (Beatrice) and then lists her again separately as single.

    Notes:

According to the Organization of the First Christian Congregation, his name was Mayberry, shortened to Mabry or Mabra, but spelled "Mabarie" by Margaret Ann Butts Cooley.

A blacksmith by trade, came to Texas in 1844. 1852 probably time that Loveladys and Jones moved over into Dewitt County on the Manahurla Minnuvee Creek, also called Buzzard Roost Country.
Olive Massie stated that he had "served as county judge of Gonzales for several years"(?)

    (Wikipedia)

Clinton county seat starting in Aug 1850. Court was held in a log house until a log courthouse was built at a cost of $400 in 1852. A frame building was erected in 1855 and followed by a two-story courthouse in 1858.

    Jones Family Reunion of 1901
Father and Seven Children Meet in Waco After a Separation of 35 Years

The Convention of the Christian Church in this city last week furnished the occasion for a family reunion which was enjoyed with intense delight by the participants.
Mabra Madden Jones, who lives near Palestine, Texas met seven of his children in this city and the father, brothers, and sisters spent the week together. It was the first time they had all been together since 1866, thirty-five years ago. Atat time the youngest was only six years old and the oldest was twenty-five. All had seen each other since that time but at different times and places.
The elder Jones is eighty-one years old and his children, seven in number, all live in Texas, but in different parts are as follows:
Dr. George W Jones of Proctor, Texas
Mrs. Sue M. Linthicum, 618 Earle St, East Waco
Mrs. Mary M. Moore, 1102 Columbus St, Waco
Cyrus Y. Jones, 575 Orleans St, Beaumont, Tx
Stephen L. Jones, 701 So. 17th St, Waco
Andrew P. Jones, Helbig, Jefferson Co, Texas
    Henry M Jones, Palestine, Tx

Mabra Madden Jones, father of the five sons and two daughters named above, was born in Kentucky, in 1820. He moved to Missouri and in 1840 was married to Miss Sarah Lovelady, daughter of Elder James Lovelady. In 1844 he removed to Texas staying in Cass Co. until 1847, when he proceeded to Victoria, only a few months after the Indians made their last famous raid to the coast country and burned Linnville, five miles south of Victoria. He soon accumulated some capital at the blacksmith business and invested in cattle, establishing a ranch in Goliad Co. His first wife, Sarah, the mother of these seven children, died in DeWitt Co. in 1860 and in 1863 he married Miss Martha Ponton in Lavaca Co. Nine children blessed this union, seven of whom are still living.
At the close of the war between the States, the children of the first marriage separated and while they all remained in Texas; some of them are now living four hundred miles apart. They have occasionally visited each other, and all have visited their father; though this is the first reunion of the family. The father and the eldest son had not seen one another in twenty-four years. George, Cyrus and Henry had not seen one another in twenty-six years. All the others had not met in the last ten years.
The week had been passed in one continual and unbroken round of pleasure in which grand children and great grand children participated.
The father and seven children were photographed in a group and another interesting group was made with the Elder M.M. Jones, his daughter, Mrs. S.M. Linthicum, her daughter, Mrs. Runie M. Moore, and Mrs. Moore's daughter, Miss Ollie representing four generations.
The reunion will adjourn today, but the family recorded a pledge that if possible it shall be repeated every year in the future.

    Notes:

    (From Leonard B Meyer)
    July 24, 1997
    Dear Sherry Sharp:

Your letter came yesterday, and some material from Wilma came today. I told my wife Ruth that it seems I have acquired another fan in Wilma, that making two, Ruth being the other one! I am glad that what I have contributed is appreciated,d I appreciate what I have received also.

Perhaps I should make it clear how I acquired this much information regarding such a limited time span. A few years ago, I got possession of a bunch of old letters and documents far long enough to transcribe them by hand, into three bindef legal paper. I started out trying to learn more about the Butts family from which I am descended, and from there the search proliferated into the Lovelady, Bownds (Bounds?) and other families.

My great-grandfather, Jackson Butts, married Jane Lovelady as his first wife. She died August 31, 1847. He married a second wife, Catherine Poland, who died within a year or so, then in 1852 he married Susan Bownds who was my great-grandm. So, you see, there is no blood relationship between me and the Loveladys, except for Jackson's oldest daughter Margaret Ann, who was Jane's only survivor who had children. But Pappy Lovelady wrote to Jackson and Susan as son and daughter, Mary Jones addressed her as "beloved aunt," and Stephen wrote to my grandfather as "Cousin Berry."

I think there is no doubt that the Loveladys, Buttses, and Joneses were in Victoria County in 1844, as one of Jackson's sons, Andrew, appears as born in Texas about that time. Also I have a copy of a handwritten receipt which goes "Receif Jackson Butts the sum of five dollars in full of his state and county tax for the year 1849 - F.U. Fordham, Ass & Coll, V.C., Victoria County."

Also, Ann, the youngest Lovelady girl, married Alfred Allee November 4, 1847. And I have a copy of the Bill of Sale of the home of James Lovelady to Edward Fink, Lot #1, Block 117, Range 8, Victoria, April 24, 1852.

In the statement in the summation sent by Wilma regarding the organization of the First Christian Congregation in Victoria, about James and Nancy being on the board, there is a little error. Those named, James and Nancy, Jackson, Sarah any Jones, A. Allee (Ann had already died) and perhaps Felix Webb, were the whole congregation!

It must have been in 1852 that the Loveladys and Joneses moved over into Dewitt County on the Manahurla Minnuvee Creek, also called Buzzard Roost Country.

There was quite a lot of communication between the Joneses and Butts families in the '50s. In 1860, George was going to school in Goliad. A letter from Mary goes thus: "We are all about to leave this country. Pap (James) and Grandmaf going to the mountains. They have sold their cattle." There seems to have been a terrible drought that caused many people to leave that area. Added in a postscript at the beginning of the letter is "I have got the sweetest little brother. He can sit alone. He is as fat as a pig." That must have been Henry at several months old; and it is apparent that Sarah must have died soon after Henry's birth. So my date of 1860 must be an error of reading an indistinct date.

So, Mabry and Mary, and perhaps others moved to Terryville, on the line between Dewitt and Lavaca Counties. But Susan Mariah must have married to A Wiggins and was still living at Middletown or Weesatche. Susan later lived at Hoss Bluffrty County and urged George to come out there, as that area needed a doctor and singing school teacher. But that was in 1872, after the war! Instead, he seems to have married Frances Bosworth and was living near Schulenburg in Lavaca County. From there, in connection with the Bosworth family, we find him living up in Central Texas, Red Rock, Pettytown, maybe San Saba and finally Stephenville. He and Frances are buried in West End Cemetery, Stephenville, Erath Co, Texas.

I have no date for Mary's marriage, but she and Mr. Norton moved to Oak Hill near LaGrange, Texas. After several years, they moved to North Texas, then moved back. Mary was living in Burleson County about 1914. According to the reuni, Mary had married a Moore, and Sue had married a Linthicum.

Mary never had any children (by choice), and I am of the opinion that the friction between her and Mabry was because she married and did not continue to take care of his "four little motherless boys" as she put it. Anyway, she tried toe of the boys, as George and Sue did. Mabry farmed the boys out at times, some of them to my great-grandmother Susan. But the 1870 Census reveals that Stephen and Andrew were living with Mabry and Martha then, as well as daughter Nancy and Nellie (b 1864 & 1868) and the 1880 lists a son Joel A, born November 28, 1874.

I am confused about the children of Martha listed as being born in Chambers Co, after Nancy (Nannie) and Nellie, also Joel A. I know nothing about Laura, Tom, Anna, Alice and John, but those named above were in the 1870 and 1880 Lavaca Cos records and must have been in Lavaca Co at that time. Also, it is a matter of record that Mabry officiated at the wedding of his father-in-law, Dr. Joel Ponton, to Harriet Koonce on October 1, 1871, near where I now live in Lavaca Co. However, it may well explain Stephen's reference to having been to Beaumont on one occasion.

Incidentally, I have noticed that Mabry and Sarah had a daughter Nancy J, born 1848, next after Sue. About the name ---- in the document about the Organization of the First Christian Congregation, the name is Mayberry, which no doubt is t, shortened to Mabry usually, but spelled Mabarie by Margaret Ann Butts Cooley.

I have just been checking the list of Mabry's children and the dates given for their births seems to have been made from a faulty memory. Assuming, I think correctly, that the three families came to Texas in 1844, it seems obvious that Ge841 and Mary 1843 were born in Missouri, but there is some doubt about Susan 1846 and Nancy 1848, though I think they were born in Texas. But Cyrus 1852, Stephen 1854, Andrew 1857, were born in Texas because the document of the Organization of the First Christian Congregation in Victoria has the names of M.M. and Sarah, date of March 28, 1849. Henry was not listed in the census of 1860, so his birth date 1863 is probably correct. It is on record that Cyrus Jones was in Goliad Co in 1870, age 18, seemingly living with relatives after the breakup of the Jones family. But in a letter from Mary she wrote that Susan Mariah (Margaret Ann Butts spelled Mariar) wrote that Mr. Wiggins had "joined the church" and that Cyrus intended to. I wonder if this Cyrus was one of the Wiggins children. In this letter Mary complains that Mabry had George and Susan a brother to keep, but had refused to give her one.

As far as I had known previously, Margaret Ann, Jackson's daughter, Sue Wiggins, and George were the only Lovelady descendents, and I am glad to find there were others. I have been trying to find some of the Jones descendents for some ythout success.

I was born, not many miles from where the Joneses and the Loveladys lived, in Goliad County, at a later date, Dec 7, 1906. From that you will notice that I will be 91 on my next birthday. My handwriting has deteriorated considerably spied these letters.

I am sending this information for you to consider, before I send any copies. I will have to go through the letters to find some that will illustrate what I have written. But as I wrote Wilma, I have three binders full of writings, ant want to let them get away, possibly in the mail. I have suggested that Ron Lehde, who lives in Victoria, copy those he wants to, but she/Wilma reports that his copier is in need of repair. Since Sherry Sharp has a son John in Houston, I might make the same offer to him. Or I might leave the material at my son's place, 30211 Charlie Lane, Magnolia, Texas 77355. Maybe something can be arranged.
    Sincerely,
    Leonard B. Meyer

    Notes:

There have been many variations of his middle name,Brookway, Blockman, several other spellings. In reserching various Shermans/Stebbins for Richard's family, there was a collateral family named Brockway. I'm betting this was the source of his name. There was also a Lothrop family marrying into the Brockway family - in fact, there was a Lathrop Brockway. This is same Lothrop/Lathrop family of Jane Lothrop who married Samuel Fuller whose daughter married Nicholas Bonham, who we believe is our Catharine Bonham Madden's ancestor. It may turn out we're doubly related to Samuel Fuller if we could find Richard Sherman's exact connection.

Civil War - Lothrop enlisted August 7, 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B, Texas State Troops Cavalry. He was 38 years old at the time he entered the company as a private.

August 1855. Mary was born 18 October 1835 in Tennessee and died 30 September 1889 in Chambers County, Texas. She is buried in the Eminence Cemetery. She was the daughter of John and Susan (Shelton) Kirk, and the widow of (?) Fairas, possibly P. J. Fairas who died 29 July 1851. Lothrop and Mary's daughter Amanda Petronella Sherman was born 15 October 1863 in Chambers County and died 14 December 1918 in Beaumont. She married Andrew Prather Jones on 16 November 1882 in Chambers County. He died on 9 June 1929 in Beaumont. Both are buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont. "Jacob Haven Sherman Sr.'s seventh child was Lothrop Blookway Sherman. Lothrop arrived in present day Chambers County in 1854 and married Mary in 1855. Since she was a widow, she had separate funds. On 28 October 1856, Mary paid $30 for the purchase of 1/4 of a league of the Shadrack Burney survey from Tabitha Jane Shelton Jones. This became their home place. By 1860, Lothrop had cleared and improved 131 acres, with 93 acres left to clear. That year it was reported he owned one horse, one mule, one milk cow, eight working oxen, twenty cows, five sheep and twenty head of swine. He harvested one hundred and fifty bushel of Indian corn, eleven bales of cotton, fifty pounds of wool, three hundred bushels of sweet potatoes, and three hundred gallons of wine. After farming their homestead for seven years, Lothrop heard the patriotic call of the Civil War at the age of 38. He left Mary, who was seven months pregnant (with Amanda) and their three small children, and enlisted on 7 August 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B, Texas State Troops Cavalry. He entered the company as a private. Lothrop returned safely home from the war to once again farm his land and to live another twenty-five years with his loving supportive wife."

    Name:
Name: Lothrop -- apparently named for the Lothrop family who married into the Fuller family -- i.e. Mayflower descendants.

Brockway -- seen many spellings of this name - Blockway, Brookway, Blookway -- and others. Blockway is a family name that married into the Stebbins line beginning back 4 generations from Rebecca, a Bridget Blockway. Quite reasonably the source of the name.

    War Record of A.C. Shelton.

Your father and my grandfather both fought for the Republic of Texas and through the Mexican War. Was in the battle of San Jacinto and a great many others both the Mexicans and Indians and when Mexico wanted to take back a part of the tery form the Rio Grande to Geudelupe. General Zaichery Taylor got a regiment and fought them clear back into Mexico. But he told his men when they were ready to cross the Rio Grande all that had families could go back, so grandfather returned. But your father went right on and fought in the battle of Monterey and wanted to go straight on, but the Government took part of General Taylors men and sent them around by boat to General Scott. So General Taylor and his men turned north, conquered New Mexico and lower California and on their return buried the bones of some of the American soldiers who had been way laid and killed. Then there was a lull in fighting until the war between the States.

When the Federals slipped in and took Galveston everything was aroused. A.C. Shelton was on the job and was made a leiutenant under Capt. Richard Dowling. General Magruda in Charge. They recaptured Galveston and had to hold if for months he Federals went around and thought they would come in through Sabine Pass. A.C. Shelton was sent to hold the Pass with 40 men, and they sank and captured their boats as fast as they entered and the Federals gave that up. That was considered the most brilliant defeat of any battle of the army and Jefferson Davis awarded the company a gold in honor of the occasion. Then A.C. Shelton was in the battle of Pleasant Hill and Mansfield La.
Now I hope this will be as much consolation to you as it has been a pleasure to me to write it. You and your daughters can all go in the Daughters of the Republic, also the U.D.C. if you are not already members. I am a member of both. Wn on your Father's record in U.D.C. and my Grandfather's D.R.T. so come on.

    Family Tree
    Washington Shelton, Son and Wife,
Annie, Payne, Shelton settled in Murry Co, Tenn. Shelton is Scotch. Payne is Irish and Wilson is Welch. I presume that is the Great Grand parents. Grandfather Shelton settled in Tenn. Had born to them 8 children in all they were all d in that state. Two of the daughters married and remained there. Aunt Kiziah and Aunt Polly. My Grandmother Susan came to Texas with the family also Uncle Washington. Father of Tom, Amos, George, and others. Uncle Amos your father. Aunt Maria Carraway, Aunt Tibitha Jones mother of Barton, Lura, Annie, and Irene. Aunt Marha who married a Wallis reared 3 sons. Dan, Frank, and Robert. Then a Mr. Hartwell reared 2 sons and one daugher. Will, Albert, Roxie.
The Sheltons first settled in San Augustine lived there about 3 years moved to Nacogdoches. Was there at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto, remained there 3 or 4 years and moved to Chambers Co. All but my Grandmother first married a Kirk. He was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. She was left with 2 babies one just an infant, died at 2 or 3 months of age. Kirk was Aunt Mary Sherman's father.
Aunt Maria Carraway and her husband settled at Neches. Reared 2 sons and one daughter. Jeff is the only name I know. He died and she married a Mr. Nelson, they reared 8 boys and 2 girls but I don't know but 2 names among them. Dwight n Houston two years ago. Cousin Robert Willis told the other name. Clinton a Doctor. That was in 1910. Cousin Robert told me if I could get in touch with you I could add something to what he told me, and also referred me to Uncle Washing's older daughter Mrs. C.F. Jones who he said lived near Stephensville, Earth Co. But he could not give her rural no. so I never did write to her. He said she was older than he so I don't suppose there is any use trying now. I have Cousin Roberts old letter here by me copying what I can from it. And I did the same for him. He has forgotten all he wrote to me. He also referred me to Irene Fulks, but she is another one I never did get in touch with as well as your own dear self. So now dear, I hope you get something out of this anyway. Now I am going to take a clear sheet of paper and write your Father's war record on a clean page.
    So bye.

Sherry, I sent some things to your personal e-mail. I did not know Susanna had a child with William Kirk, so I would love to have the descendants of this marriage. I do not know who the Sherman family is. Can you explain their connection? There may be children in the second marriage of Susanna and John James Farrir, but I do not have that either. I have mostly concentrated on Martha Wilson Shelton, my direct ancestor, but I am interested in anything I can get on her siblings also.

I hope I have given you something to carry your research forward. Check your personal e-mail when you get this.

Shadrack Burney (by Kevin Ladd http://www.sfasu.edu/heritagecenter/8482.asp)

Shadrack Burney was born about 1789 in North Carolina and is usually referred to as one of the earliest settlers of this area. A Shadrack Bur-ney appears in 1792 as the grandson of a Simon Burney, whose will was probated in Greene County, Georgia Most sources give his date of arrival as 1823. When the family of E. H. R. and Sarah (Barrow) Wallis settled at Wallis Hill in the winter of 1824-1825, they found only two bachelors living in that section. Family tradition holds that one of the two was Burney. The other was a Mr. Arnold, although no records have ever provided any more information about him. The 1826 census of the Atascosito District lists him as a farmer and stockraiser and also indicates he had previously resided in Louisiana before coming to Texas. His survey, located on the north side of Turtle Bay (Lake Anahuac) was bordered on the west by the E.H.R. Wallis Survey and on the north and east by the M. A. Carroll Survey. His title was dated April 24, 1831. His name does not appear in any local records after that date. One record refers to Burney as a former associate of the pirate/privateer Jean Laffite. The only landmark that links this early settler to the land is Burney Gully.

The book "The Story of Beaumont" is on-line in html (web page)format with an index and list of illustrations that were created for it (it had neither). Published in 1925/26, it is a valuable reference for early East Texas researchers. The index has the actual page numbers where the reference is found to make citations more precise.

The table of contents can be found here:
    http://www.mykindred.com/wiess/st-o-b/index.htm

It can be a lengthy download if on a dial-up connection, so it is also available without the graphics at:
    http://www.mykindred.com/wiess/st-o-b/toc-old.html

There were numerous typographical errors and some grammatical errors. No corrections were made to the document. It is, so far as I can determine, true to the original.

    "G. W. Hargraves, who was captain of a little Beaumont company of militia in August, 1835, had sixty-two men under him, twenty of whom took part in the battle of the Alamo. He also was at the head of twenty-one volunteers who started to join ston to stop the advance of Santa Anna, but the battle of San Jacinto was fought before they reached that place, and they were ordered to rout some hostile Indians north of the town. Men Mr. Hargraves could remember years after who were in his company, were;

    _____________
Lived with John Sparks right after marriage (1850 Census - census date 24 Oct; marriage date, Oct 15), but must not have stayed there very long. They are also listed in 1850 living with James Eaves, a laborer, and his wife Eliza (ages 37), with the Eaves' children, Rachel, 8; Lazil, 5; and Joseph, 2, all from Louisiana except Joseph who was born in Texas. Julia was only 14. Listed as a farmer.
    _____________
The marriage of James Courts, son of Thomas and Ann Johnson Court, and Julia Ann Sparks, 13 year old daughter of John Sidney and Melinda Jones Sparks, brought together two of the founding families of lower East Texas. Thomas and Ann, with James as a baby, came to Sabine Pass about 1829/30. The historical marker in Sabine Pass Lion's Club Parks states that our Court Family and another family named McGaffey were here "as early" as 1832. Not only were they in Texas before it became a state, they were here during the time that it was part of Mexico, and in 1836, when it became a Republic in its own right. Our family can truly say we are mutli-generation Texans.

The Sparks arrived in Texas, traveling by covered wagon from Tennessee, in 1838, when Julia Ann was just two. They settled on Pavel's Island first, then came ashore at Sabine Lake and became the first permanent anglo inhabitants of what was called "Aurora", and which eventually became Port Arthur.

The Pioneer Spirit prevailed as both families withstood early life on the Gulf Coast. Yellow Fever, mosquitos, hurricanes and tropical storms, alligators and other wild creatues combined to make life harrowing and an adventure at the same time. Some of those stories will be included in other history items.

James and Julia began their married life in Aurora, and eventually built their own cabin. Julia's brothers, sisters, and some cousins married and remained in the area of Aurora. James' siblings stayed in the area of Sabine Pass and Port Arthur as well, although several moved away after they reached adulthood.

James and Julia had 13 children, most of who have descendents still living here in the Golden Triangle. We have located descendents of the other children as well.

James and Julia are featured in the Museum of the Gulf Coast in the section on "Aurora." Pictures of both of them and several other family members (Sparks) are on display.

    Hey Sherry,
I went digging at the Orange Library this evening. Actually came up with a book from the SE Texas Historical Society that showed some listings of civil cases filed in Beaumont in 1874/75.

James Courts and other family members were listed in several of them.

The files are in the Sam Houston Regional Library. They are:

    File 106 - Case #517
Wesley Garner, administrator of Estate of Holland C.V. Edmondson vs. James Court - 1869

    File 107 -
Wesley garner, administrator of Estate of Holland C.V. Edmondson vs. Lewis King (Lewis was Sarah Ann Court's husband) - 1869

    File 108
same as above vs Sam Lee (Sam was married to Julia Ann's sister) -1869

    Box 6
    File #3 - Case 609
James Courts, C.C. Gientze vs. Charles W. Winn - 1874 - Postal Service (this one has me intriqued)

Case 610 has same infomration as Case 609

    File # 51
    Case #626
William Allison vs. James M. Court - 1875

James "Jim" was one of the first Pony Express Riders in Texas. He carried mail from Sabine Pass to Harrisburg (Houston), Texas. He was also a farmer and cattleman. During the Texas Battle for Independence in 1836, James was on the muster Roll for Jefferson Co. George Hargraves organized the company. They were known as "Capt. Chessire's Company Volunteers." (Jefferson Co Historical Commission Veterans, Pt 1). The Book "Pioneer Remimscences of Jefferson County" by T.J. Russell, p 34, states in Sabine Pass "Thomas Courts and son, James Courts, were there with John McGaffey at an early day. Both are dead. Several children of James Courts are now in this county."

From Frank Courts: I also checked the article on the removal of graves from the private cemetery where Dupont is now located on Port Arthur Road in the 60's. It states that James M. And Julia were both found there and moved to Forest Lawn. It also lists the other graves, 22 in all, including a James F. (as you stated) and a James C. Court as being moved from there. I dont know why your list is different. I have been to Forest Lawn and have seen the moved graves. The remains were grouped under four headstones which say "T. F. Smith Homestead Tract Cemetery" or something similar. Forest Lawn does have the names listed, and Carroll Wallace funeral home has other records of the move, which they coordinated. T. F. Smith was somehow connected with the Sparks, I believe.

    Hi Sherry,
I received this info from a friend who "lives" genealogy and has been very helpful to me. His name is James A. Johnson age 75 who lives in Bellaire but doesn't have a computer. He sent the following:

    1850 St. Landry #1996-2361 #455-455

Vigel Frozia 45 Farmer $800 Pers. LA (1850 Fruge 40)
    Mary 46 (35) LA
    Artimese 14 LA (17 Pierre, 10 Louisa, Artimese 8)
    Susan 12 (6) LA
    Uzenie 10 (1) LA (Eugene)
    Useph 8 LA (Joseph?)
    Phitestine 5 LA (Celestine?)
    Alzemah 7/12 TX (Azema?)

    #456-456

Pier Frozia 23 farm laborer LA (#1996-2361 1850 St Landry age 17)
    Elizabeth 17 H.K. LA (b. TX)

Sherry I've written the above just as Mr. Johnson wrote it to me. Hope it's not to confusing. Artemeas/Artimese and Susan were sisters of Pierre but I don't find Denise. Could she have been born later?

I know that my GGF Pierre Frugia (Fruge) married a second time and had a son Lyman Frugia and a dgt. named Goldie. Lyman Frugia, Jr. and his wife Doris Ann live in Vidor and I've written to her twice sending her my data in hopes she would share but she hasn't.

From marriage books for Jefferson County I have Pier Fruge m. Julia Courta 14 Jul 1897 and Pierre Fruge m. Mrs. Lidia Cuniff 31 Aug 1891. I know that my GGF Pierre called his son Pierre "Peter" but I have nothing else. So I don't know who married whom.

You can say I'm still a novice when it comes to genealogy but I'm learning. Do you know if copies of Successions from LA can be ordered by mail? I found several Fruge's listed in Imperial Calcasieu and St. Landry Parish. Also listed were some Hayes. There is a book written by Shirley Burwell of Lake Charles I presume listing all the successions.

Any tips or suggestions are most welcome. Keep in touch.

    Ruth

    (Notes of Kirby Courts:)
Julia was the daughter of John and Melinda Sparks, who came to Texas from North Carolina in the 1850s. Julia was probably born in Tennessee in about 1836. She lived to be 89 years old and spent most of her life in Jefferson Co, Texas. Shried James M. Court when she was 13 years old. They lived in Sabine Pass, Texas, during their first years of marriage. The older family members state that they remained there until the late 1880s. Severe hurricanes at this time destroyed the settlement on a number of occasions. The family moved to the Nederland-Port Neches area, away from the beach area. They remained there till their deaths and were buried in the old Sparks Cemetry. The cemetery is the present site of the DuPont Chemical plant. In 1952 all the bodies were reburied at Magnolia (sic) Cemetery. -- they were reburied in Forest Lawn

    Mrs. Matilda Gantz

PORT ARTHUR, Texas, Sept. 16--Mrs. Matilda Gantz, 80, widow of one of Dick Dowling's 40 fighting Irishmen who turned back a federal fleet which attempted to invade Texas at Sabine Pass during the Civil War, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning ahe residence of a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Guidry, 2001 Sixteenth Street, after a six months' illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Guidry home. Rev. Glenn Flinn, pastor of the First Methodist church, south, will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Beaumont, under direction of J.E. Grammier, mortician.
Mrs. Gantz had lived in Port Arthur for 45 years and had spent all her life in Jefferson county. Her husband served in the Civil war under Captain O'Brian. Two men were killed on each side of him in the Sabine Pass battle but he came out ofe entire Civil War without a scratch. He died in 1904.
Surviving Mrs. Gantz who was a member of the Methodist church, are three sons, Chris and Frank Gantz of Fannett and Gilder Gantz of Nederland; three daughters, Mrs. Guidry of Port Arthur, Mrs. Lena Court of Beaumont and Mrs. W. O. Minshew of t Arthur: 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    Notes:
    The Port Arthur News lists the pall-bearers as O. W. Kieth, A. M. Grayson, H. W. Hied, W. D. Smith, Glenn Lawrence and A. D. McDonald.

There is no mention of the war stories in Charles C. Gentz's obituary, nor did I find him in a list of the "40 Fighting Irishmen." This isn't to say that he wasn't there; he probably was. Still, the omissions seem . . . curious.
