-------
Matt Scruggs Muckleroy is the son of Capt. David Muckleroy and his second marriage to Sarah Ann Scruggs Norvell, 31 Aug 1863. Following the death of his father in 1869, Matt and his mother lived in Henderson, Rusk Co., Tx. with the family of John Norvell, Sheriff, who was Sarah's son from her first marriage.
Matt married Frances Olivia Burrows 12 July 1888 and shortly thereafter began living in what is known as "The Burrows House" that was located north of Nacogdoches where presently the hospital is located. The house was moved to Millards Crossing after the purchase of the property by the hospital. Legally, the ownership was with the Burrows, but was "The Muckleroy Home" as Matt and Fannie lived there and had all their children born there. My mother, Robbie, was the second youngest child of Matt and Fannie.
Matt probably became involved in deputy work as a result of living with Sheriff John Norvell in Henderson. The following is a historic accounting of the Longview, Tx. bank holdup that Matt became involved in:
"The Dalton Gangs last bank holdup was in Longview, Texas, where Matt Muckleroy happened to be working and on duty the day of the holdup. One of the robbers shot at Matt during the gunfight. The bullet struck a silver doller in his pocket and probably saved his life. Roland Muckleroy, Nacogdoches, Tx.,, a grandson, has the silver dollar and the pistol that Matt used that day. The event has been written about by Ms. Charlotte Burrows of Shreveport, LA. and published in several different newspapers."
From the book, "A Texas Sheriff", pg. 75: "Matt Muckleroy, city marshall, was at the courthouse. He heard the shooting and started towards the bank pistol in hand, on the dead run. Bennett, the bandit, in the alley saw Muckleroy coming and stopped him with a bullet in the groin. Fortunately, the bullet struck a silver dollar and was deflected. This saved Muckleroy's life."
