    "DEATH OF A PIONEER.

Mrs. William J. Young , wife of Judge Young, died at their home north of Potter at 4 this morning, after a two hours' illness, aged 77 years. Mrs. Young had not been well for some time, but was able to be up and around every day. She had trouble in getting her breath when she lay down and frequently got up in the night to sit in a chair. Her husband heard her moaning at two o'clock this morning, got up and found her in the chair in a speechless condition. He awakened the rest of the family, and though everything was done that could be done, she passed away two hours later, without regaining consciousness.

Mrs. Young had married twice. Left a widow with one child at her home in Andrew county, MO, she came to Kansas in November, 1854, taking up the claim which was her home to the day of her death. William J. Young, who had been her old neighbor in Andrew county, had arrived the previous June, and had taken up the claim which hers adjoined. He was a widower with five children, and in May, 1855, there was a union of the two families by a marriage of their heads, and the groom moved with his five children to the claim of his bride. There were six children in the family, and eight more arrived in rapid succession, and all were raised to manhood and womanhood, and though it was a case of his children, her children, and their children, it was a most harmonious family.

Mrs. Young made the first pie made in Atchison county. It was made of sheep sorrel [buckwheat family]. She had the first peaches grown in the county. This was in 1859, and in 1860, she had such a big crop that people drove down from Atchison to see the rare sight. She is survived by her husband, aged 90, and by nine children, and a great many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Three of her children live in Atchison county: Mrs. Abe Ashcraft, Sam Young, and Will Young, who lives on the old homestead. She was a woman of remarkable memory, and an alert brain, and possessed many admirable qualities. The funeral will be held from the home on Friday afternoon at one o'clock, the Rev. W. T. Hilton of Atchison officiating. Interment will be made in a private burial ground on the home place."

CHAPTER XIII. DUKE YO UNG. HIS FIRMNESS-RUMOR-SYMPATHY-GREAT IN GOOD- WILL. Duke Young was born in North Carolina, Nov. 15, 1793. His father, John Young, a strict Calvinistic Baptist, removed to Tennessee when Duke was but a few years old, and educated his family as best he could. In that early day, the facilities afforded for doing this were very poor. Duke must therefore be content with a smattering knowledge of English gram- mar and arithmetic, as well as reading and writing. When but a boy he was fond of reading good books, and eagerly sought such and studied them closely. Hence, when he became a man, he was much better informed than the majority of persons of his age in the neighborhood in which he was brought up. In the spring of 1817, he came to the State of Missouri, and fortunately settled in a community in which he had the privilege of hearing preaching, such as it was, now and then. He soon became deeply interested on the subject of religion, and united with the church then called "New Lights," or the "Christian Order." Very soon after this he began to speak publicly in the church of which he was a devoted member. But he was not altogether satisfied with the usages or 251

Duke's life is pure conjecture before he shows up in Lafayette County, Missouri. Well if you examine the base documents in the LaFayette County land records and a
history written on Duke by a man that knew him, everything changes.
http://eris.uky.edu/catalog/xt798s4jmj8h_257/text? Is the reference you want. Duke's father is John. Given that he was in Missouri in the Spring of 1817, he was not married in white County, Tn. Likely he married Sarah Lovelady in Cooper County, mo although the records could be in Coopet,
Howard or St Charles Counties, Mo. Itis known that Loveladies, Linvilles, Bowers, Youngs, Ewing's, etc all stopped in the area before moving to Western Missouri.

    from James F. Thoma 11/2/2014
    Morning Sherry,

Right now I have John Young as the father of Duke Young. I am basing this on land deal off of the BLM GLO site in which John Young assigns some land to Duke Young. Later we have the first hand knowledge of a man who knew Duke who states that his father is John Young and that Duke was born in North Carolina. This John Young is the same one on the same page in the 1830 census of Lafayette County as Duke Young. This John Young does not appear on any 1840 census. I suspect that he died in late 1837 or early 1838 as that is when Absalom and Thomas Lovelady Young purchase land all on the same day in Lafayette County along with Duke Young. Those people who have John Young as the father of Duke Young generally have John?s death year as 1838. And for want of anything else I am inclined to agree. Stan will be going to Lafayette County later to hopefully pick apart their records.

"His father was the Rev. Duke Young, a native of Tennessee, who came to Kansas in 1854, and preached the first sermon in the county, on the doctrine the Christian denomination."

    Research Notes:
Familiar relationships to help confirm Nancy Linville is a Linville - but more info is needed:

Granville Linville m Ann Adeline Johnson

Granville is brother of Harrison Linville who married Nancy Bounds.
Nancy Bounds is daughter of James* Lovelady's sister Elizabeth.

Granville and Harrison's father Richard would be Nancy's uncle.

1850 census, North Carolina: Granville living with his father in law and Nancy Young 15 (b 1835) is also there.

Gan Johnson 68 1783 North Carolina
    Nancy Johnson 63 1787 Tennessee
    Nancy P Johnson 30 1820 Tennessee
    Barnet J Johnson 21 1829 Missouri
    Nancy Young 15 1835 Missouri
    Granville Linville 40 1810 Tennessee
Ann A (Johnson) Linville 28 1822 North Carolina
    John B Linville 7 1843 North Carolina
Washington Linville 3 1847 North Carolina
    Ann M Linville 1 1849 North Carolina

Ann Johnson Linville's brother Barnet J Johnson. in 1865 Leavenworth Co, Kansas census:

    B J Johnson 36 1829 freighter 21500 MO
    _?_ Johnson 30 1835 KY
    Robt Johnson 10 1855 KY
    Lizzie Johnson 4 1861 KS
    Wm Johnson 2 1864 KS
    _?_ Neal 31 1834 female KS
    Lottie Young 1834 31 MO
    Mary Young 5 1860 MO
    Jane Young 3 1862 MO

Lottie Young -- looks like she could be a widowed sister or sister-in-law and Mary and Jane nieces - or she could be Mrs. B.J. Johnson's sister

Lottie Young probably related to Nancy Young, same age, living with Gan Johnson in 1850?
or could she even be same person? (Nancy Charlotte or something?)

Duke Young, married Sarah Lovelady, another sister of James Lovelady. he named one of his sons William Johnson Young (b 1818). Johnson name must have connected to Young name, rather than Loveladys.

Duke's sister Elizabeth Elliott, widow, with family in Bates Co, Missouri, living next door to a Lew Johnson (1815 TN) wife Polly and children, Edward Benjamin and Nancy.

These Youngs in the Johnson family are likely connect to the Duke Young family somehow. Looks like Granville marrying into the Johnson family is also indirectly marrying into the Lovelady/Duke Young connection. Also, Barnett Johnson
might have married into the Duke Young family as well.
