Subject: Wm. H. Hawkins
Wm. was married 2 times (both wives dying early) in Louisiana before moving into Sabine Pass, Jefferson County, Texas with Robert where he met Elizabeth Cunniff and married her. Robert came to live with them sometime after they settled in Chambers County.
Here's what I have on William's wife #1, cut and pasted from my summary:
"The next time we catch up with William H. is on the 1860 Census. The boy has been busy. He is now married to an Emily R. Lee as of October 20, 1852, according to the good fortune of turning up the wedding registration in the township of Vermilionville, Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. Listed with William and Emily are Jane, 7; Benjamin, 5 and Laurie, 3. William now has the correct age of 35. Emily is set down as 30 and shown on the census to be a native of Louisiana. William's trade is listed as carpenter.
Back to the questionable records as regards Emily. As noted above, the 1860 census indicates she was born in Louisiana. The hand written marriage certificate for her and William only states that, at the time of the marriage, they were both residents of the Parish in which the wedding ceremony was performed, that being Lafayette parish. Other information shows an Emily R. (Rebecca) Lee being the sixth child born to John Lee and Jane Susan Bryan in "Hampshire County, Virginia c. 1830." This being the same Emily is solidly supported by that same instrument indicating her father and an older sister died in Lafayette Parish, LA. I am satisfied that at some point, Father John moved his family to Louisiana, Lafayette Parish where Emily and Wm. met and married. Emily was one of seven girls and one boy, all born in Hampshire County, VA.
Then comes wife #2:
Ten years pass and here are the census takers showing up again. The location is the same, Vermilionville, but the family picture has changed radically. Emily is gone. At this point we presume she passed away as opposed to there being a divorce. Little Benjamin who would have been 15 at this point is gone too, The 1870 Census list the family as follows: Wm. H. Hawkins, 48 (wrong age again, should be 45); Harriet, 28 (Wm H.'s new bride) shown as a native of Mississippi, Jane, 16; Laurie, 11; Robert, 10; Mary, 9; Alice, 1 and Margaret, one month. (As previously stated, Harriet's last name was Williams)
Wife #3
On March 2, 1881 Wm. H. took as his third bride Elizabeth Cunniff in Galveston, or Lizzie as she was most commonly known throughout her life. The marriage register has her name as Lizzie Kieneff. The speculation here is that she spoke her last name when asked, whomever was writing it down must have felt they knew the correct spelling and didn't ask and Elizabeth, in her giddy exhilaration as a blushing new bride didn't bother to look to catch the mistake at that time. That spelling does the job phonetically.
