    Robert married Martha Rosanna Steele in 1767 in Augusta Co, Virginia. Martha was born before 24 Apr 1748 in Augusta Co, Virginia; was christened on 24 Apr 1767 in Augusta Co, Virginia; died on 16 Feb 1824 in Adams Co, Ohio; was buried in Cherry Fork Cem, Adams Co, Ohio.     Notes:

    He was in Dublin in 1720 and in Chester County, Pennsylvania i n 1780. He was an Ensign and later a Captain in the Revolution. He moved to Oxford, Maryland and from there to Augusta County. He held 200 acres on the Shenendoah River.

    Stout claims in 1780 he was an Ensign, later Captain in the Revolution.

    Married Mary Wallace in 1734; lived for a while in Oxford, MD. Held 200 acres on Shenandoah River, Augusta County, VA.

    (Will dated 21 December 1787 found in Augusta Co. WB 7:1 76; proved 15 September 1789).

    Messer claims William was born 6 March 1712, moved to Augusta County, 1737.

    Monette says William's wife, Mary Wallace, was sister to Rev. Caleb Wallace of Chester County, PA. (Records are found for Rev. Caleb Baker Wallace, son of Samuel Wallace and Esther Baker, daughter of Caleb Baker, in Prince Edward County. This Rev. Wallace graduated fro m Princeton in 1770 ... [Herbert Clarence Bradshaw, "History of Prince Edward County, VA," Richmond, VA: Dietz Press, n.d., p . 96].

    A William Wallace witnessed the will of William Finley in Augusta County).

    Will Parham E. Papers (McClung Collection, Lawson McGhee Library, Knoxville, TN) claim William's daughter, Ann, married John Caldwell who was a brother to the Mary Caldwell that married John Finley.

    Documents in Augusta County support the following facts about William Finley.
    His first appearance was as a member of the congregation of Tinkling Spring Church on 14 August 1741 (Howard McKnight Wilson, "The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom," Fisherville, VA, 1954, p. 84).

    He also appeared on the membership rolls of 12 November 1744 (Wilson , p. 439).

    On 14 April 1746, he was named Captain of Foot (Chalkley I:16).

    The births of three children were recorded during the 1740s ... William, b. 26 October 1740; William, b. 16 January 1743; Robert, b. 23 June 1745 (Wilson, p. 474).

    On 22 May 175 0, he purchased 297 acres in Beverley Manor on South River from John Finley, probably his brother, the elder at Tinkling Spring (DB 2:708-709), at the same time Robert Finley bought 297 acres from John Finley (DB 2:711-713). All Finleys were referred to as "Gent." in these deeds.

    On 16 May 1758, he bought 100 acres from Robert and Martha Finley, part of what Robert had purchased in 1750 (DB 11:808) and on 18 March 1765 he bought out the remaining 297 acres which belonged to John Finley, gent. (DB 11:80 8-809).

    On 22 August 1770, he sold 215 acres of this latter to his son, John (DB 16:522-524).

    By 1783 William was living with his son, Robert (Augusta County Tax Lists, LDS film #0029288 , item 2 ...

    the 1785 lists shows Robert and Wm senr, 1787 shows Robert and William, 1783, 1784,

    1786 shows Robert with 2 tithes 16+).

    On 21 December 1787, William wrote his will; proved 15 September 1789 (WB 7:176). In it he gives land to sons Willia m and Robert (son, John already got his); names sons John, William and Robert as executors. All sons still living in Augusta County on South River property.

    Monnette's "First Settlers of YeP lantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge Olde East New Jersey," says he is son of James and Elizabeth (Patterson) Finley (p. 1491. More About William Finley: Fact 2: St Peters, Dublin, Ireland.

    His will is in the Augusta county Will Book 7, page 176 proved 15 September 1789. The will is dated 21 Dec 1787. He leaves William his son, the land he lives on, To his son Robert, the home place and to his children. Son John has already received land. Executors are to be his sons. Teste: William Wallace, Andrew Ramsey, Sarah Finley.
