Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  James* Craig was born in 1750 in Augusta Co, Virginia (son of Robert Thomas* Craig, (not son of Wm & Janet) and Grizell* Crawford(?)); died about 1836 in Smith Co, Tennessee.

    Notes:

not sure of this portion of the line from Elizabeth Craig.
Have seen that she is daughter of James and Susannah Burchett, and James is son of John Craig and Hannah Davis. However, the tree shows John as son of John 1732-1805 and Mary Molly Cox. No references.

James* married Hannah* Davis about 1770. Hannah* was born about 1780; died after 1830. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    1. James* Craig was born in 1787 in North Carolina; died in Jan 1860 in Pope Co, Illinois.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Robert Thomas* Craig, (not son of Wm & Janet) was born on 20 May 1712 in Co Donegal, Ulster, Ireland (son of Alexander (maybe) * Craig); died about 1749 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Immigration: Between 1721 and 1722, America
    • Residence: Bef 1741, Virginia

    Notes:

Rev. John Craig (Beverley Manor NE, 335 acres, 1742) (b. 21 Sept. 1710, Ireland, d. 21 April 1774, Augusta County, VA).

Robert Craig (Beverley Manor NE, 178 acres, 28 Feb. 1749 as verified in Chalkley's, Volume III, pg. 650 (all transactions on page are from 1749) (b. 1713, d. June 1788, Augusta County), son of William Craig and Janet Stuart.

revisiting this page 6/4/2014, it no longer says he is son of William & Janet: new entry says:
Robert Craig (Beverley Manor NE, 178 acres, 28 Feb. 1749 as verified in Chalkley's, Volume III, pg. 650 (all transactions on page are from 1749) (b. bef. 1722), m. Grizzell, little is known of this family, need additional info/research.

James Crawford (Beverley Manor NE, 401 acres, 1747), (b. 1719, d. abt. 1750, Augusta County, VA), married Elizabeth Robertson.

Patt, there is pretty good evidence that the Robert who m. Grizzell was not the son of William and Janet, immigrants. Robert and Grizell patented land in Beverly manner away from the other Robert Craig and his brother James. Deed to patented land was delivered to Grizell, indicating Robert
had died, which was subsequently substantiated by deed from Grizell's son to her other son. One was in Charlotte County and the other in TN. The Robert Craig who is believed to be the son of William and Janet died much later and there is plenty of evidence about his children. How have you heard that the last name of Grizzel was CRAWFORD? Certainly makes sense because Crawfords lived in vicinity of Robert and Grizzell. Am trying to sort this out, but absolute proof may not be available, so appreciate anything you have.

also with reference to Frances Craig, dau of Robert:
"I know that there have been various reports that her parents are Robert and Grizell Craig of Augusta Co., but NOT the same Robert Craig who died in 1788. For many, many years, at least 50 genealogists thought this Robert to be family member of the Craigs who descended from immigrants William and Janet. This has since been disproven; however very little is know by the William-Janet descendents about the Robert who married Grizell and lived in the same vicinity, though a couple miles west. They came to VA shortly before 1741. One source has told me that he believes my Robert was born in Ireland and his father's name is Alexander and he had two other sons, Samuel and John. My Robert was born in 1713 and died in 1749."
